October always ends with a fun activity- Halloween! On Friday, October 31, students (parents welcome) will participate in a school wide parade on the path around the playground starting at 2:45 PM followed by classroom parties. Students should bring their costumes to school. Please remember to refrain from sending students with costumes that include look-a-like weapons, fake blood, or violent themes. Costumes should not contain objects that might be diffi cult to move around in or may injure another student. Thanks for helping make this a great time for all!

From Our PTA President………Hello Bailey Lake Families!
The 2014-2015 school year is off to a wonderful start. Our PTA has been working hard to raise funds to enrich your child’s experience at Bailey Lake Elementary. Our fi rst “Running of the Bulldogs” was a tremendous success. The total monetary contributions came in at $31,673. This will help provide funds for classrooms, fi eld trips, and enrichment programs for our students. I would like to thank Theresa Rotman and Ashleigh Guidoux for all of their hard work on this successful event. The students were so excited racing around the track, it was a great way to have fun and raise funds. I am always amazed by the high level of support from the parents, students and teachers; this essential ingredient is what makes Bailey Lake such a great school. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success!
The school directory will be coming out soon. Membership forms are available on the website and you can also pick one up from the main offi ce.
Sincerely,
Becky Walker

Please look for communications coming home to help the Room Parents gather supplies or provide other informa-tion needed to make these year’s parties a success.
CLASS PARTIES 101This year, BLE will host three class room parties. Times and dates are as follows:
Halloween Party, Friday, October 31, 2:45 p.m. (includes parade)Holiday Party, Thursday, December 18, 3:00 p.m.Valentine’s Party, Friday, February 14, 3:00 p.m.
Here are some ways you can make this year’s parties a success for your child and their classmates:• Know when the parties are and if your child needs to
wear or bring anything for the event• Look for requests from the Room Parents to donate
items for the party.• If you off er to donate items, send them by the due date• Ask the Room Parents if you want to send in additional
snacks/items for the party• If you are stopping by to visit, we suggest you:
arrive slightly after the party starts (to allow the Room Parents to get things started)
• Try to car pool — parking is VERY limited for these events
• Be willing to help pass items out, clean up, etc., as needed by the Room Parent
• Limit chatter — the rooms can get very loud and diffi cult to give instructions, etc.
• Avoid bringing siblings — we know its not always possible, but there is limited space in the room
• Enjoy watching your child interact with his/her friends, learn a new craft/game, etc.
• Bring your camera — these are great opportunities for a photo!
Thanks in advance for helping to make this a great year of celebrations at BLE!
*There are no Room Parents that have signed up for this class.
What a beautiful day at Bailey Lake for our 1st ‘Running of the Bulldogs! ‘ Change is always hard, but wow! these kids looked like they had fun!!! They showed great spirit, cheering each grade level as they took turns running... It was wonderful to see!
We could not have surpassed our goal, if it wasn’t for all the wonderful families and businesses that supported our school! Thank you so much, each and everyone of you who did!
Our school raised collectively over $31,000!!! Amazing!!! And our principal colored his hair blue for the day among other surprises for the kids...
Each student received a special ‘grade colored t-shirt’ that they should be able to wear throughout the year for special events. These shirts were only made possible by the generous donations of local
businesses in the area. Should you be in their establishment, please make sure to mentionyour appreciation!
All the kids, as well as the teachers enjoyed the competition to obtain our goal of $24,000 and beyond! In the end we had over 86% participation from the entire school. We hope everyone felt like a winner!
There were some wonderful people behind the scenes helping to make this day enjoyable, special and rewarding for all. Thank you Christy Kreucher and Andrea Beauchamp for your help throughout the planning stages of this event and all the volunteers that helped the day of our run.
Your “Running of the Bulldogs” Team, Theresa Rotman and Ashleigh Guidoux

Council’s Corner………… Dear Clarkston Families,
Whether we admit it or not, we, parents, often have a good idea of whom we’d like to see as our children’s teachers, especially at an elementary school. We talk to their current teachers, do some research here and there, and write letters providing our input in this matter. After all, we want a good fit.
As concerned as we are about our children, when it comes to making decisions that might affect their education on a large scale, we often don’t feel compelled to invest a lot of effort. The most important example of this is how much thought we put into the elections for our Board of Education.
Of course, most of us know what the Board of Educa-tion does. The Board of Education has the final say in every initiative or decision regarding our schools – from textbooks and curriculum our students use, to repairs of the buildings in which they spend many hours, to salaries and professional development for their teachers, to the amount of money for various needs. In fact, the Board determines who fits to be our superintendent. It governs our schools.
What this means to you and me is that the people we elect are in charge of our kids’ education. We trust them with our children. How much do we know about them?
This year we have five candidates running for the Board. On October 16, 2014, the League of Women Voters will moderate the Board Of Education Candidates Forum, which will take place at Clark-ston Junior High School. The forum will run for about one hour, starting at 7:00 p.m.
Please make it a priority to find out who fits well in our schools.

Are your children safe while online? Michigan families, es-pecially minors, are becoming inundated with advertise-ments from alcohol, tobacco, pornography and gambling marketers through diff erent internet and cell phone inboxes. Texting their advertisements is the newest mar-keting eff ort that many of these companies are using. Thankfully, the State of Michigan off ers a free program to stop adult advertisements from reaching e-mails, mobile phones (text messaging ads) and instant messenger IDs. The Michigan Child Protection Registry, like the federal Do Not Call List, is a free do-not-contact service for Michi-gan’s families and schools and can be located at www.ProtectMIChild.com.
As a strong supporter of this registry, I would like to en-courage you to sign your entire family up for the registry and inform your friends and colleagues about how they can protect children and families from unwanted adult advertising. To sign up only takes seconds. Just go to www.ProtectMIChild.com and keep your family safe.

*********Fall Teacher Conference Dinner…It’s already time for fall teacher conferences, and as we’ve done in the past, we would like to provide our teachers and staff with a nice meal to show them how much we appreciate them during the fi rst evening of parent-teacher conferences on Tuesday, October 14th. We are hoping to provide them with a couple of diff erent varieties of chili, along with salads and dessert.
We have also noticed that the staff lounge is running very low on coff ee supplies, so we have added some of these items to our list. Keep in mind that coff ee supplies for the lounge are always welcome and appreciated, and can be left at any time in the box outside the school offi ce.
Please help us to make this event a success by volunteering to bring in one of the items on our Sign-Up Genius, which can be found at www.SignUpGenius.com/go/30E0944A8A923A20-blefall/
