THE PRESIDENT

Here 1 s to the Northern California Irish Wolfhound Club!!!!!!!!!!

A standing ovation is in order for the brst Specialty ever. A VERY SPECIAL THANKS

TO GREG SHAW AND HIS SHOW COMMITTEE!!!!!!!!

From all the comments I heard throughout the day and during our after-Show banquet, it seems unanimous that our Show was enjoyed by all who attended. Having a Hospitality room so near ringside with coffee and donuts for everyone was a great success. Also, 11Vith everyone 1 s room surrounding the ring, there were very favorable remarks about the convenience and comfort.

We received a letter from the El Rancho Tropicana Hotel inviting our Club to use their facilities again anytime. I feel we have found the perfect location for future Specialties.

I, for one, can 1 t wait until next year!!

[--Believe It or Not/ I 13

Featured in the "Freak Tent" of Butler Amusements

travelling carnival, along with the 5-legged calf, two

headed lamb and other oddities, is "The World's Largest

Dog" which turns out to be an elderly Irish Wolfhound.

He's very bored, rather scruffy, and not even very large

for an I.W. When the last fact is pointed out to the

attendant, he claims the dog ~ the largest "in his day:.'

Apparently they shrink quite a lot with age. This account

was filed by our far flung reporter who witnessed the

display at the Canyon Country Frontier Days celebration.

He reports further that the dog seemed well cared for

and was probably kept entertained by watching the wierd

and curious onlookers.

Butler Amusements is based in San Jose, so

northern California carnival buffs should check out

the freaks and see who is the largest dog in the world

believe it or not !

14 The story of the Irish Wolfhound

in America

by John A. K. Donovan

All Irish Wolfhound fanciers in America should be very proud to know that apparently the very first purebred dog to land on American soil was an Irish Wolfhound who came on one of Columbus's journeys.

While it was not an American Irish Wolfhound, we should also be very proud of the heroic Hound who was wounded in the trenches in World War I and swam the English Channel to escape. He accompanied some British soldiers escaping on a raft and, when he tried to mount it, was told to get away--but nevertheless made the trip. Upon his recovery, he was used successfully as a watchdog in England. His name was, appropriately enough, "Shannon".

However, it was many years after the journeys of Columbus before the Hound appears in any number in the U.S. During the year 1897, the first and second Irish Wolfhounds were registered in the U. S. Then it was not until the year 1912 that any specimens became champions; they were the first and second to earn the title and they were both owned by one T.D. Robinson . In the year 1927, the American Kennel Club granted a charter to the Irish Wolfhound Club of America , and, during the same year, the first biennial club book was published . It was not until 1934 that regional clubs began to be formed . The first was the Irish Wolfhound Association of the West Coast, which was founded in 1941 . In 1949, The ori~inal bulletin of the parent club became a quarterly , (now a biennal), under the name of "Harp and Hound" . Then, during 1973, the Mid-Atlantic Irish Wolfhound Club (now The Potomac Valley Irish Wolfhound Club) , was founded, with Andrew M. Carey of Fairfax, VA, as president . Shortly after its founding, the club began the publication of "Faol Cu", believed to be the very first regional bulletin to appear. In 1982, the club was recognized by AKC under the title "Potomac Valley Irish Wolfhound Club". Then in 1982, the club was incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia with the author contributing his legal services as he had previously for the Irish Wolfhound Club of America .

In 1974 , the Irish Wolfhound Association of the Delaware Valley was founded, with Diana Powers of Flemington, as

Page 17: OCTO BER 1982 VOL.IX, N0 - NCIWC

15

president. In 1981, the club presented its first regional specialty at Kerns Memorial Park, New Britain, PA. The event was a huge success, with entries from the states and Canada.

In 1975, the Mid-Atlantic Club marched down Constitution Avenue in Washington, DC with 22 Irish Wolfhounds, believed to be the largest number to appear in any parade anywhere up to that time.

Mrs. Grosvenor Ellis founded the famous International Kennel Club of Chicago. Each year, its catalog features a composite drawing of an Irish Wolfhound head on its cover. As everyone knows, Mrs. Ellis has been for some time the chairman of the board of directors of the parent club.

In 1972, at the SOth anniversary of the Irish Kennel Club, held at the hose show grounds at Ballsbridge,Dublin, Miss Mary Jane Ellis of the Killybracken Kennels served as the judge of the Irish Wolfhounds. The author handled a friend's bitch under her .

Now to recount a pleasant story of the Irish Wolfhound in his home land. A leading member of the Dail (Irish Parliament), wrote to a friend of his, another member of the Dail who operated a famous hotel in the County Mayo, asking permission to bring his champion Irish Wolfhound along with him. The amusing reply was worded approximately like this: "I have never had to call the security guards to evict a disorderly dog, nor have I ever had to put out a fire caused by a dog smoking in bed, nor has a dog ever given me a bad cheque, nor have I ever found a hotel towel in a dog's suitcase - so you are welcome to bring your Irish Wolfhound, and you are welcome to come also if he will vouch for you."

DO YOU HAVE A HOWLER OR TWO AROUND THE HOUSE?

Peter Boyle, in the September 25th issue of the San Francisco Chronicle suggests that ringing the mess

hall triangle when the dogs start their chorus will cure them of howling. after a few times. Something

about the pitch of the ring hurting their ears. We use our triangle to call the cows in for evening chow and I've never seen a dog bothered by it. However, we do have a problem with a howler who starts all the other dogs singing, so we'll try this cure

and see if it works.

The recent IWQ HOTLINE helpful hint section suggested

that planting Chinaberry trees here and there is a sure way to have flea-free premises. It was thrilling news to me, but before digging holes all over the yard I looked up Chinaberry Tree in my trusty Poisonous Plants book . To my dismay and disappointment, I found it therein - all parts poisonous, especially the fruit . It may work wonderfully on fleas , but if you plant it, keep animals and children away.
