Look at the book pictures on the next page. Decide, just by looking at the book
(judging the book by it’s cover), whether you think it is ‘Literature’, ‘’Popular
Fiction’ or something in between. Cut out the books and put the literary books
on the top shelf and the popular fiction on the bottom. Anything else can go in
between. Make sure you can explain why you have made the choice, e.g if the
book looks like it might be a romance, does this make it popular fiction?

What are the first things to think about for the set of ‘Educating Rita’?
Ciaran is showing a model box which is a smaller version of the set created
before the starts rehearsing. Its is something that all designers work from, and
helps to give a clear idea of the space that the director will be working in.
What are the key elements of the story that you want to portray in your set and
lighting design?
When Ciaran talks about Rita’s enlightenment—enlightenment refers to ‘the
state of understanding something’. In religious terms it can also indicate the
highest spiritual state that can be achieved.
What do you think about when designing a production for two venues?
We are showing ‘Educating Rita’ at the Octagon theatre in Bolton and at Derby
theatre. We are changing the configurations for each theatre. At the Octagon, it
will be in the round. At Derby it will be in thrust.
