Overview This design started out as a “stash buster”. I had no intention of writing up a pattern, but I liked it so much that I decided to share it. It is a very versatile pattern and can be used for anything from baby blankets to blankets for king size beds. It would make lovely cushion covers and a variety of other items. I have provided formulas for calculating yarn requirements in this document. I used colour blocking for this, but the design lends itself to all kinds of different layouts. I look forward to seeing your individual interpretation of this pattern. I made this as a piece of “sofa-art” and used it to liven up my patio area. I’m very happy with the outcome. This pattern caters for both right and left handed construction.

Finished Size and Size Adjustments Approximately 90 x 130 cm (36 x 47 inches). To adjust the size, either add more Octagons and Filler Squares, or add less. Calculate your yarn requirements using ColourSpun Pure Cotton DK (8 ply) yarn: Each octagon uses approximately* 16g/0.6oz (20 Meters/22 Yards). Each filler square uses approximately* 2g/0.07oz (2.5 Meters/2.7 Yards). The border uses approximately* 23g/0.8oz (28.75 Meters/31 Yards) per octagon, i.e. take the number of octagons in your project and multiply 23g/0.8oz by that number. *This assumes that you are working to the correct gauge.

Gauge To ensure that you don’t run out of yarn, it is important that you work to the same gauge as in the sample. Each 8 round Octagon must measure:

17cm (6,7”) edge to edge – before blocking.

I blocked each octagon to 20.5cm (8,1”) edge to edge.

20cm (7,9”) edge to edge – after blocking. See pictures below.

Before blocking 17cm (6,7”) During blocking 20.5cm (8,1”)

Hook Size Adjust your hook size to accommodate your own gauge/tension.

If you have a loose tension, it is recommended that you adjust your hook size down from the recommended sizes in this pattern. If you are finding it difficult to obtain the correct gauge you may wish to buy extra yarn in the same dye lot to accommodate this.

If you have a particularly tight tension, you may wish to adjust your hook size up.

Difficulty

My testers have given this pattern an easy rating. With the assistance of the video tutorials, it is believed that even beginners would be able to easily complete the project, however, you would need to have basic crochet skills, as this is not a “how to crochet” project.

Yarn The preferred yarn used in this pattern sample is ColourSpun Pure Cotton DK / 8 Ply. ColourSpun is a South African brand, which we are justifiably very proud of for the following reasons:

ColourSpun yarn is created by hand; therefore, each skein is imbued with the artist's energy and will have its own unique characteristics.

Cotton is the most used textile fiber in the world. It is a non-allergenic cellulose fiber that doesn't irritate sensitive skin and is ideal for warmer weather.

ColourSpun Pure Cotton Yarn is ring spun, (a process that gives greater durability while maintaining softness, making it perfect for knitting and crochet) from the finest quality, locally produced, pure, natural cotton and coloured by hand in the ColourSpun studio using a chemical free, earth-friendly process. All the dyes used are GOTS approved and have excellent wash fast and light fast properties.

If you decide to use a different weight yarn, your throw will not be the same size as the sample made in this pattern. Refer to chart on below for more information on yarn types.

If you are unsure of what weight your yarn is, please check the label for the meterage/yardage: approximately 125 meters / 137 yards per 50g ball of yarn. You may use any brand of DK yarn if it meets the meter/yard requirements specified above.

Care Instructions and Blocking

Why Block? It is my considered opinion that blocking of most projects is a very important step towards achieving a professional finish. If you would like to know more about this important process, please download a document I have prepared about this subject.

This project will benefit from blocking. This is because of the complex mix of textures and stitches. This will help the post-stitches to settle. I blocked the octagons prior to joining and I also blocked the completed project.

Testers A huge thank you goes to the following lovely and talented ladies who tested the pattern for me:

Ingrid Rosendahl

Kim Lategan

Valerie Burton

They did this so willingly and with so much enthusiasm. I am truly grateful to them for their ongoing support.

Resources Thank you to The Craft and Yarn Council’s web site www.craftyarncouncil.com, which has been a great resource.

Inspiration Most of the inspiration came from many, many years of crafting with crochet. I thank my late “Ouma” – Gertie Kaltenbrunn, and my mother, Beryl Kaltenbrunn for their tuition over the years. My granddaughter Neave Weston inspired me to start to design and document my work. This pattern is dedicated to them.
