(BPT) - Where words fail, the creative arts have the ability to speak. Art therapy is an empowering technique that allows for self-discovery and has the power to produce insight and expression in a non-threatening way. That is why the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) encourages creative arts as a therapeutic, and often lifesaving tool for returning soldiers.

This year, the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) will partner with the VA for the 16th consecutive year to co-present the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival (NVCAF). The weeklong event is attended by 120 talented, gold medal-winning veterans from across the country. Many have participated in art therapy at their local VA hospitals and were recommended to compete in their local veterans creative arts festivals to nurture their talents.

This year's national festival will take place in Jackson, Mississippi. Previous participants speak highly of the week of performance, healing and awareness. "It's the history and the stories of the people that makes the program so impactful," says William Gura, a visual artist and first-place winner in previous festivals. "The expressions are about what we've seen and experienced. They give us these works of art that only a veteran can create."

Veterans from war eras spanning Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan gather together to cultivate and eventually exhibit their talents in painting, music, writing, dance and other areas. ALA member Elizabeth Mackey, director and creative arts therapist for the VA, says the festival is a window into the veterans' experience as active military personnel.

"When you view a performance or gaze at a painting, you don't just see the artist, you come to understand who these veterans are, where they came from, what they are battling and where they are going. It has been my privilege to learn from them time and time again," Mackey says.

Art therapy encourages expression and memory recall. It can be used in physical rehabilitation to regain damaged motor skills, or as a cognitive therapy to encourage emotional sharing. Often conducted in a group setting, art therapy is used as a way to show patients that they are not alone and reinforce the benefits of their treatment plan.

The ALA began to sponsor the NVCAF in 2000, but the relationship has grown and ALA now co-presents the festival. ALA members devote more than 25 million dollars' worth of

volunteer hours to the festival annually. Their roles vary from assisting veterans with art projects and erecting displays, funding travel and support, to supporting publicity, productions and materials development. In recognition of its dedication to healing veterans through art, the American Legion Auxiliary was honored by the Americans for the Arts in 2014.

Peggy Thomas has volunteered more than 800 hours to the festival. She says art therapy is the process of healing and a glimpse inside the struggle of the artist veteran who has been silent. "The festival shines a light on innovative work in order to give back to people who have given so much to us," she says.

JACK-O-LANTERNSOriginated in Ireland with turnips instead of pumpkins, are based on a legend about a man name Stingy Jack who repeatedly trapped the Devil and only let him go on the condition that Jack would never go to Hell. However, when he died, Jack learned that Heaven didn’t really want his soul either after all his devilish dealings, so he was condemned to wander the earth as a ghost for all eternity. His old friend, the Devil, gifted Jack a lump of burning coal, which Jack carried around in a carved-out turnip to light his way. Locals began carving frightening faces into their own gourds to scare off evil spirits such as Jack of the Lantern.

GHOSTSCeltic people believed that during the festival Samhain, which marked the transition to the New Year at the end of the harvest and beginning of the winter, spirits walked the Earth. Later, the introduction of All Souls Day on November 2 by Christian missionaries perpetuated the idea of a mingling between the living and the dead around that time.

COSTUMESWith all these ghosts wandering around the Earth during Samhain, the Celts had to get creative to avoid being terrorized by evil spirits. To fake out the ghosts, people would don disguises so they would be mistaken for spirits themselves and left alone.

BLACK CATSThe association of black cats and spookiness actually dates all the way back to the Middle Ages, when these dark kitties were considered a symbol of the Devil. It didn’t help the felines’ reputations when, centuries later, accused witches were often found to have cats, especially black ones, as companions.

BLACK AND ORANGEThe classic Halloween colors can also trace their origins back to the Celtic festival Samhain. Black represented the “death” of summer while orange is emblematic of the autumn harvest season.

CANDLES AND BONFIRESThese days, candles are more likely than towering traditional bonfires, but for much of the early history of Halloween, open flames were integral in lighting the way for souls seeking the afterlife.

BATSIt’s likely that bats were present at the earliest celebrations of proto-Halloween, not just symbolically but literally. As part of Samhain, the Celts lit large bonfires, which attracted insects. The insects, in turn, attracted bats, which soon became associated with the festival. Medieval folklore expanded upon the spooky connotation of bats with a number of superstitions built around the idea that bats were the harbingers of death.

HELPS TUMMY TROUBLESFor an upset stomach, sip some apple cider vinegar mixed with water. If a bacterial infection is at the root of your diarrhea, apple cider vinegar could help contain the problem, thanks to its antibiotic properties. What's more, some folk remedy experts contend that apple cider vinegar contains pectin, which can help soothe intestinal spasms. Try mixing one or two tablespoons into water, or clear juice like apple juice.

CURES HICCUPSTake a teaspoonful of apple cider vinegar; its sour taste could stop a hiccup in its tracks. One teen took the hiccup remedy further and created a lollipop that includes apple cider vinegar, which she says "cancels out the message to hiccup" by overstimulating the nerves in the throat responsible for the spasms.

SOOTHES A SORE THROATAs soon as you feel the prickle of a sore throat, employ germ-busting apple cider vinegar to help head off the infection at the pass. Turns out, most germs can't survive in the acidic environment vinegar creates. Just mix 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar with 1/4 cup warm water and gargle every hour or so.

More research is needed to definitively link apple cider vinegar and its capability to lower cholesterol in humans, but one 2006 study found that the acetic acid in the vinegar lowered bad cholesterol in rats. Also, a Japanese study found that half an ounce of apple cider vinegar a day lowered cholesterol in people who participated in the panel.

PREVENTS INDIGESTIONSip before eating, especially if you know you're going to indulge in foods that will make you sorry later. Try this folk remedy: add 1 teaspoon of honey and 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar to a glass of warm water and drink it 30 minutes before you dine.

CLEARS A STUFFY NOSENext time you're stuffed up from a cold, grab the apple cider vinegar. It contains potassium, which thins mucus; and the acetic acid in it prevents germ growth, which could contribute to nasal congestion. Mix a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink to help sinus drainage.

AIDS IN WEIGHT LOSSApple cider vinegar can help you lose weight. Here's why: The acetic acid suppresses your appetite, increases your metabolism, and reduces water retention. Scientists also theorize that apple cider vinegar interferes with the body's digestion of starch, which means fewer calories enter the bloodstream.

GETS RID OF DANDRUFFOn his website, Dr. Mehmet Oz recommends apple cider vinegar as a dandruff treatment. The acidity of apple cider vinegar changes the pH of your scalp, making it harder for yeast to grow. Mix 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar with 1/4 cup water in a spray bottle, and spritz on your scalp. Wrap your head in a towel and let sit for 15 minutes to an hour, then wash your hair as usual. Do this twice a week for best results.

CLEARS ACNEApple cider vinegar makes a great natural toner that can act as a natural home remedy for acne and leave skin looking healthier. Its antibacterial properties help keep acne under control, and the malic and lactic acids found in apple cider vinegar soften and exfoliate skin, reduce red spots, and balance the pH of your skin.

BOOSTS ENERGYExercise and sometimes extreme stress cause lactic acid to build up in the body, causing fatigue. Interestingly, the amino acids contained in apple cider vinegar act as an antidote. What's more, apple cider vinegar contains potassium and enzymes that may relieve that tired feeling. Next time you're beat, add a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar to a glass of chilled vegetable drink or to a glass of water to boost your energy.

CUTS DOWN ON NIGHTTIME LEG CRAMPSLeg cramps can often be a sign that you're low in potassium. Since apple cider vinegar is high in it, one home remedy suggests mixing 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar and one teaspoon honey to a glass of warm water and drink to relieve nighttime leg cramps. Of course, by the time you walk to the kitchen to put the drink together, your cramp is likely to be history—but maybe that's the point.

BANISHES BAD BREATHIf proper brushing and mouthwash doesn't do the trick, try the home remedy of using apple cider vinegar to control bad breath. Gargle with it, or drink a teaspoon (diluted with water if you prefer) to kill odor-causing bacteria.

WHITENS TEETHGargle with apple cider vinegar in the morning. The vinegar helps remove stains, whiten teeth, and kill bacteria in your mouth and gums. Brush as usual after you gargle. You can also brush your teeth with baking soda once a week to help remove stains and whiten your teeth; use it just as you would toothpaste. You can also use salt as an alternative toothpaste. If your gums start to feel raw, switch to brushing with salt every other day.

FADES BRUISESApple cider vinegar has anti-inflammatory properties; dabbing or laying an apple cider vinegar compress on a bruise can help fade the discoloration.

HELPS CONTROL BLOOD SUGARA few swigs of apple cider vinegar could help keep your blood sugar levels balanced, according to several studies that have shown a link between the two. One study of people with type 2 diabetes who weren't taking insulin found that taking two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bed resulted in lower glucose levels by morning. Another study at the Arizona State University found that insulin resistant people who drank a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water before eating a high carbohydrate meal had lower blood sugar afterward. Scientists think the antiglycemic effect of the acid is the key.
