ANIMAL ARKUNTIL 19 OCTOBER 2014Drawn from the State Art Collection, this exhibition sets out some of the ways animals have been depicted across various media by generations of artists. Created for a family audience, there are over 120 works that explore the mythology, symbolism and representation of animals by historical, Indigenous and contemporary artists. Through a broad range of works, the exhibition also invites visitors to consider and enjoy how animals play a part in our lives. A free activity space where kids can draw or write about their favourite animal, guided tours and exhibition sheets make it fun for the whole family.

25 YEARS OF THE AGWA FOUNDATION UNTIL 23 NOVEMBER 20142014 marks the 25th anniversary of the Art Gallery of Western Australia Foundation. Since its inception in 1989, the Foundation has helped the Gallery purchase over 4,500 works for the State Art Collection. To celebrate this milestone, a showcase of significant works acquired through the Foundation’s vital support is on display AGWA. Visitors can also view 245 works acquired through the Foundation that are currently on display throughout the permanent Your Collection galleries.

Richard Avedon People celebrates the work of American photographer Richard Avedon (1923 to 2004). With work from 1949 to 2002, the exhibition offers an in-depth overview of Avedon’s achievements in the art of black and white portraiture photography. Known for his exquisitely simple compositions, Avedon’s images convey the essence of his subjects in charming and disarming ways. Always accessible, they speak of his profound concern with the emotional and social freedom of the individual. His work is also a catalogue of the who’s who of twentieth century American culture. In the show, instantly recognisable celebrities, artists and political activists are presented alongside portraits of the unknown or long forgotten.

AUSTRALIAN DESIGN: TEN YEARS OF THE PETER FOGARTY FUND UNTIL 9 MARCH 2015The Peter Fogarty Design Fund has formed the heart of all the Gallery’s craft and design acquisitions over the last 10 years. This exhibition brings together for the first time, the exceptional works purchased through the Fund. It includes jewellery by Mari Funaki, Cinnamon Lee, Helena Bogucki, Sally Marsland; furniture by Jon Goulder, Khai Liew, Dinosaur Designs, Korban/Flaubert, Penelope Forlano, and Christopher Robins; alongside ceramics by Kirsten Coehlo and Robin Best, glass by Jasper Dowding; stationery and vessels by DANIEL.EMMA.AGWA Foundation Governor Dr Tim Jeffery established The Peter Fogarty Design Fund to support the acquisition of works by Australian designers and craftspeople not yet represented in the Collection.

NEW PASSPORTS, NEW PHOTOGRAPHYOPENS 15 NOVEMBER 2014New Passports, New Photography is a celebration of the Gallery’s recent acquisitions of Indigenous and non-Indigenous photography around the theme of portraiture. It brings together over one hundred works – the majority of which are yet to be displayed – that explore how photographers use the camera to reflect, construct and challenge identity.

New Passports, New Photography ranges from soft, personal imagery to strong and powerful statements, from the intimate to the deeply political. It represents some of the ways identity is represented and self is shaped through this most accessible yet most challenging of contemporary art-forms.

Anna Kanaris and Arthur Clarke established Artitja Fine Art in 2004, inspired by a love of the art and a deep respect for ancient Australian Aboriginal culture and tradition. ‘Our aim is in connecting cultures through the art. Quality Aboriginal art is not just beautiful, it provides insights into Indigenous stories and Tjurrkupa (dreamings). Within Australia and internationally, the art plays an important role as a medium for connection between very different cultures.’

Based in South Fremantle, Artitja Fine Art specialises in Indigenous Fine Art from remote and regional art centres and communities, and operates year around by appointment. Exhibition and special event details can be found on their website www.artitja.com.au

ANDREW KAY – SCULPTURE AND GRAPHICS

12 OCT TO 30 NOV

Gomboc Gallery is pleased to host Andrew’s first solo exhibition for over ten years. This exhibition expresses the creative journey he has undertaken over this time and Illustrates a movement away from his previous bronze and steel sculpture towards the possibility of allowing windows of colour into his artwork by the use of fused coloured glass. This passage of light through the coloured glass becomes an integral component of the sculpture. The glass inspired graphics have all been selected from areas of glass that Andrew has created and are a wonderful visual expression of the innate variety and subtle hues that are within a shard of coloured glass.

Anna Nazzari, Tanisha Burtnyk, Gina Cinanni, Thea Costantino, Moira Doropoulos and Marzena Topka.Opening Night Function: Friday, 26 September 6.00pm to 8.00pm

The expression “otherworldly” is frequently used to define something of, concerning, or attributable to another world, typically a mystical or transcendental world.

In the exhibition, Otherworldly, artists will create a series of strange objects and super sensory spaces that capitalise on the illusory facets of the otherworld to communicate novel visions of reality. Through the imagined lens of past histories and distant futures, the works will comprise of dreamlike environments, psychic and celestial presences, weird forms and poly-dimensional depictions of time and space.

BRIAN MCKAYWORKING INTO THE LIGHT

21 SEP 2014- 1 FEB, 2015

Holmes à Court Gallery at Vasse Felix, in association with Central Park, presents Working into the light: a photographic record of the late Brian McKay's last works commissioned by Central Park.

This exhibition is a photographic record of the eighteen four-panel aluminium works measuring 2.0 x 2.0 m commissioned by Central Park for their 18 lift interiors.

Brian McKay and Bevan Honey began working on the commission in March 2013 and it was completed before Brian's death in March 2014. Bo Wong photographically recorded each of the works. The eighteen photographs have been printed and mounted on aluminium and stand as a testament to the vision of both artist and commissioner.

GERLOONG : AGNES ARMSTRONG, KITTEY MALARVIE & JUDY MENGIL26 SEPTEMBER - 15 OCTOBER In the vast and dynamic landscape of the Kimberley, the rivers, lakes and waterholes provide much needed nourishment to the land and its people. As such, these ageless life-givers are a prominent subject matter within the Indigenous lore of the region, both ancient and new. The artistry of Agnes Armstrong, Kittey Malarvie and Judy Mengil is testament to this truism.

GLADDY KEMARRE - ANWEKETY, THE BUSH PLUM22 OCTOBER - 8 NOVEMBER 2014 Shimmering constellations of fruit emerge in these paintings from tiny points of colour that are meticulously worked into shifting layers which evoke the desert landscape. They produce a sparkling vision of country that shows the unity of all things with the Dreaming – place, people, flora, and ceremony. Through their reference to ceremonial body painting and their invocation of the continuum of the Dreaming, they present both a spatial and temporal circularity that acts as a metaphor for the relationship between the local and the universal. The joyful rhythms of the canvas reflect Gladdy’s pride in passing down the story of the bush plum, as her grandmother did before her, and her keenly felt joy of renewing her traditions.

TIMOTHY WULANJBIRR RETROSPECTIVE 12 NOVEMBER - 13 DECEMBER 2014 Indigenart - Mossenson Galleries held Timothy Wulanjbirr’s first solo exhibition in 2003. Timothy tragically passed away in 2013. SHARED SKY1 OCT – 2 NOV

Shared Sky is a project bringing together indigenous artists from South Africa and Australia, in a joint exhibition celebrating humanity’s most ancient cultural wisdom, alongside one of the world’s greatest scientific and engineering endeavours – the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope project.

Artists of /Xam descent from the central karoo region of South Africa’s Northern Cape province and Wadjarri/Yamaji Aboriginal artists of the mid-west region of Western Australia, have independently created artworks in response to ancestral stories related to the view of the sky they share above their traditional homelands in each continent. These sparsely populated, remote desert locations were specifically chosen as the sites for Africa and Australia to develop the SKA radio telescope project

for their environmental conditions that are perfect for radio astronomy observation. They are both sites of rich and ancient traditions that have largely disappeared from view in their ancestral lands but that live on in the spirit of the artists working in the community based art centres of Nieu Bethesda in South Africa and Geraldton in Western Australia.

Shared Sky was developed in collaboration with Yamaji Arts, Geraldton, Western Australia and the First People Centre at the Bethesda Arts Centre, Nieu Bethesda, Eastern Cape, South Africa, in partnership with the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Organisation, Manchester, UK; the SKA South Africa, Johannesburg, South Africa; and the SKA Australia, Australian Department of Industry, Canberra.

MEMENTO MORI

18 OCT – 13 DEC

In the midst of life we are in death . Memento Mori artworks prompt us to ponder on the emptiness and transience of earthly pleasures and reassess our moral progress as we move toward the certainty of death. The extraordinary video work Allegoria Sacra by the Russian collective AES+F is an evocation of Purgatory as an international airport and together with selected works from the University of Western Australia’s art collection, the Cruthers Collection of Women’s art and commissioned works by contemporary Western Australian artists the exhibition exhorts viewers to contemplate their own mortality.

SELF PORTRAIT AS A SHARED DREAM

18 OCT – 13 DEC

Self Portrait as a shared dream is a play on the Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art’s strong thematic focus on self-portraiture. Instead of attempting to express the ‘individuality’ of the subject, the exhibition presents a collection of works in which the individual is a collective construction, a figure forged from common histories, pop culture references and institutional memories.

In 1952 aged 17, Shirley Corunna (nee Bynder), a young Yamatji woman, moved from her home in wildflower country north of Perth to the city for work opportunities. This exhibition celebrates Shirley’s journey of discovery and independence and provides a snapshot of the social life of Aboriginal people living in Perth during the 1950s. The Coolbaroo League was not only an organisation with political interests, it was also a place for Aboriginal people living in the city to comet together and socialise. YOU’LL BE SORRY WHEN I’M DEADA SOLO EXHIBITION BY TARRYN GILL4 – 19 OCT

You’ll Be Sorry When I’m Dead, a major new solo exhibition by Tarryn Gill, explores visual cultures of death, memory and consumption through an immersive installation of textile-based sculpture, sound and theatrical lighting. Equal parts memorial, phantasmagoria and self-portrait, this exhibition envisions the artist’s tomb with the kitsch theatricality established throughout her practice to date.

UNDER WATERA SOLO EXHIBITION BY MICHAEL MUIR22 – 26 OCT

Presented by Jan Murphy Gallery, Brisbane, and Sophie Gannon Gallery, Melbourne

Under Water marks acclaimed Sydney based artist Michael Muir’s Perth debut. Drawing from his personal experiences of travel and fatherhood, Muir’s new series of oil paintings reminisce about the quintessential family beach holiday. The artist, who was recently awarded the $30,000 Mossman Art Prize, masterfully manipulates viewer perception through a deliberate flattening of the picture plain. Upon closer inspection, rich texture and tonal complexity is revealed.

NEW SINCERITYAGATHA GOTHE-SNAPE, CATHERINE OR KATE, CLAIRE LAMBE AND MEG STOIOS. 8 NOV – 6 DEC

Curated by Chelsea Hopper

New Sincerity investigates the boundaries between sincerity and irony, focusing on methodologies artists undertake to approach sincerity which is often held in high art as an unforgivable sin of self-absorbed naiveté. However, sincerity has a newfound potential for serving the exploration of vulnerability, interpersonal connection, loneliness, and what it means to be courageous.

IGOR MIHAJLOVIC SUBLIME IN THE SUBURBIAOPENING 28 NOVEMBER29 NOV - 14 DECGallery open 9:30am-5pm Daily

In this body of work, Igor Mihajlovic attempts to recreate memories of his experiences in the suburbs of Perth by reconstructing them through the method of collage. Contrasting feelings of terror and awe stemming from vastness and silence of the suburbs visited, he manipulates a collage of existing imagery formed into new narratives providing an exaggerated, almost comical, view of Perth; aimed to reflect the re-imagining of his day-to-day experiences of the city.

EXHIBITION: 8-22 NOV

The art of snorkelling forms the premise for this site specific exhibition aptly titled Float by Western Australian artist Julie Hylands. Her layered ‘landscapes’ not only tap into the allure and beauty of the ocean, but also to the darker undercurrents of apprehension that lurk when exploring the unknown - creating other dimensions.

OLGA CIRONISLISTENING UNDER WATER25 SEP – 26 OCT

Olga Cironis’ practice is determined by her Czech/Greek Australian identity. Both her art and her identity are marked by migrancy, by the locations and dislocations of belonging and un-belonging, and by the objects that mark our comings and goings. Cironis troubles the definitions of personal and cultural identity. She includes herself amongst the everyday ‘things’ that she has collected from friends, found on roadsides, or sourced from deceased estates. For Cironis, such fragments are loaded with meaning and seeped in nostalgia; domestic furniture, blankets, clothing, ornaments, hair, toys and artefacts. The pieces are metonymic, metaphoric and fetishistic. Cironis re-invests these discarded objects with an elusive significance, suggesting that her identity (and her art) is a complex process of losing and finding, of holding on and letting go. - Josephine Wilson

BRONEK KOZKAPERFECT: SYNTHETICTHEME PARK SERIES, SHENZHEN, CHINA

The Theme Park series explores hyper-reality, the re-staging of memories of place and photography, it also looks at ideas of representation and re-construction. Cultural theme parks, out-door museums and historical re-enactments (re-enactment groups) provide the basis for my research for this series. Their ability to create, control and manufacture an experience informs my art making practice. As Nick Stanley explains in his essay Chinese Theme Parks and National Identity, “The visitor is invited not only to inspect but also to enter the theatrical sense of the occasion.” In this series I visited 3 theme parks in Shenzhen in southern China, Splendid China, China Folk Culture Village and Window of the World. Each space tackled their chosen theme in quite different ways yet they all employed the same sense that they were manufacturing an experience to be consumed.

MIKE GRAYNEW AUSTRALIAN PLANTS AND ANIMALS30 OCT – 30 NOV

New Australian Plants and Animals’ is a body of work that examines the experience and position of non-indigenous Australians of multiple generations on the migrant-indigenous axis. The work consists of photographs, sculptures and installations that all revolve around the use of single element lenses to create an aesthetic similar to what is experienced in the human eye. By isolating the ocular part of vision the work looks at a preconscious phenomenon and re-introduces us to an unknown relationship between our physical selves and the physical world that our cultural instruments have no

way of measuring. I have applied this effect to that of Terra Australis on the colonial psyche. Included in the submission images are prototype sculptures, installation objects (weather balloon with lens) and a virtual mock-up of the installation.

Since its conception in WA in 2002, this international collective has been leading a global conversation with artists across generations and hailing from Perth,Fremantle, Melbourne, Amsterdam, London, Basel and Dijon.

David Tremlett, AC4CA project 14, 2010. Acrylic on wall.

The driving and uniting concept for the group is to transform outdoor community spaces with striking site-specific non-representational works painted directly on urban walls, often with the help of friends and art students. Often the works are temporary and have since been painted over to make room for new projects by someone else in the group. It’s collegiate, open-ended and moves with the times and conversations around public art. This full-colour, up-scaled expanded painting show will take place in and around the galleries and spaces of PICA.

JOAN ROSS (ARTIST IN RESIDENCE)YOU CAN’T JUST TAKE EVERYTHING3 OCT – 1 NOV

Joan Ross combines images of early colonial paintings with aspects of contemporary life in her witty and darkly humorous digital prints and videos. These striking works force the viewer to contemplate the complex relationship we have with the Imperial occupation of Australia. Relationships of power are often symbolised in her use of fluorescent colours, referencing hi-vis vests where the wearer has the power to go anywhere, unquestioned. Joan Ross’ residency is proudly sponsored by the Turner Galleries Art Angels and the Central Institute of Technology.

THEA COSTANTINODAUGHTERS OF THE EMPIRE3 OCT – 1 NOV

In this exhibition of new staged photographs, Thea Costantino explores the ambivalent and anxious position of imperial women as a marginal group within a privileged ruling elite facing the loss of power during the history of the British Empire. Daughters of the Empire considers these themes in relation to contemporary Australia, a colony where the invaders came to stay and where the legacies of Empire still continue.

PETER DAILEYCOMPOSITE7 NOV – 6 DEC 2014

Peter Dailey’s new exhibition of large scale sculptural works continues his investigations into notions of human frailty in the face of corporate greed and power. His exquisitely carved and constructed wooden artworks, in the form of cathedrals (Power) and silos (Greed), thrust proudly from their wheelbarrow bases. Accompanying them are small scale digital prints of video stills.

KATI THAMOTIMELAPSE7 NOV – 6 DEC

New linocuts, etchings and collagraphs by Kati Thamo consider the passing of time, the passing of place and also the passing on of people. They are about memory and forgetting, and how experiences and stories are distilled over time. These are depictions of a fragmentary and disappearing world, one that has become distorted with the passage of years. The works explore the way narratives unfold, and how myth and fable become entangled with the tales.

Joan Ross’ residency is proudly sponsored by the Turner Galleries Art Angels and the Central Institute of Technology. Turner Galleries will be closed for annual holidays from 19 December to 20 January.

Sydney based artist Brendan Van Hek presents solo exhibition Lost at Sea, which features new installation and drawing work. Through a continued exploration of materials Van Hek mines the possibilities inherent in neon, glass, mirror and acrylic. This new significant body of work takes the notion of being ‘lost at sea’ as a way of exploring the idea of an uncertain future, unknown directions, or indeed the often precarious nature of contemporary existence.

RAW COMB - CONRAD TIPUNGWUTISOLO EXHIBITION

20 SEPT – 18 OCT

Conrad Tipungwuti was born in 1962 on Melville Island, Tiwi Islands, Northern Territory.

Tipungwuti pays homage to traditional Tiwi culture and to the work of his Tiwi contemporaries yet breaks from the formality of jilamara (traditional Tiwi design) with his raw and energetic mark-making and relatively loose but deft application of vibrant earth ochre.

Using both the kayimwagakimi (traditional wooden painting comb) and brushes, his paintings are bold whilst retaining a lightness and gracefulness that Tipungwuti refers to as “just like the rain in my paintings.”

Multiple lines intersect, dots chase each other across the surface and when caught become shimmering rays of uneven, pulsating lines of red, yellow and white ochre, and are then layered and arranged with extraordinary asymmetry and harmony.

Last year, Tipungwuti was a finalist in the Western Australian Indigenous Art Awards 2013 at the Art Gallery of Western Australia, acknowledging a new maturity in his practice and growing interest in his work.

INCONVERSATIONCURATED BY LYNDALL ADAMS, CHRISTOPHER KUEH AND RENEE NEWMAN-STOREN9 OCT - 24 OCT

This exhibition looks at the processes of collaboration among researchers from different art forms and discipline backgrounds. Its aim was to foster conversations between researcher collaborators to produce a broad range of creative works. These dialogues inform the wider discussion of the challenges of cross-disciplinary collaboration and ways to engage researchers and artists to explore their discipline boundaries and connectivity. This exhibition intends to nurture healthy intellectual rigor and invites conversations across disciplines sympathetic and empathic to creative directions that might speak to innovation and new knowledge within the academy, to industry and to the general public.

PERTH CONVENTION & EXHIBITION CENTRE21 MOUNTS BAY ROAD, PERTH3rd October to 12th October9am -5pm, daily

‘The Kimberley and Beyond’, a feast for the eyes and senses, has been created by two artists well versed in the contours, colours and character of the Kimberley. Nadeen Lovell has lived in that region for 25 years. Kimberley Kohan lived there for 11 years before moving to Fremantle. The ‘Beyond’ paintings encompass other regions of Western Australia with a sprinkle of flavour from such remote destinations as Mongolia and the Antarctic. This blend of subjects by artists, who have successfully exhibited together many times, also brings the viewer a wonderful mix of different mediums and exciting styles. There is nothing half hearted here. Meet the artists and learn more about their work throughout the duration of the exhibition.
