A very dynamic and activity-filled daywas observed on Saturday 24December, 2016 at UIT, Pakistan’spremium technology institution, wherethe ACM Karachi Student Congress2016 (AKSC ’16) was held with greatfervor.

A collaboration between Association ofComputing Machinery (ACM), theworld’s largest educational andscientific computing society, and UITComputing Society (UITCS), an active

student chapter of the ACM, the eventfeatured various workshops, competitions and seminarsencompassing digital technology,cyber-security, engineering ethics,games/app development and more.

Mr. Mohammad Ebrahim Hasham,Managing Director & ExecutiveDirector at Mehran Sugar Mills Ltd.attended the event as the Chief Guest.

The daylong event was inaugurated by

Dr. Zahir A. Syed, followed by awelcome speech by the Chief GuestMr. Mohammad Ebrahim Hasham. Theactivities that ensued included threeworkshops on app, game and webdevelopment, five competitions aboutprogramming, innovation, ethics andvideo games, and two seminars oncyber-security and engineeringprojects & community service. Allactivities were moderated by theleaders in their respective industries.

If one is asked for a loan, of a fewthousand rupees by one’s neighbor, then it will be done if the neighbor is areliable person. To judge, whether theneighbor is reliable, one would recall hisdealings in the past many days.

• If I have been purchasing rice from acertain shop and I found that theshopkeeper is honest , then next timewhen I go to purchase rice , I will go tothe same shop as in my view theshopkeeper is reliable.

• Most people purchase electric bulbsof a Brand, which in their opinion is areliable brand.

• In a similar way if a certain gadgethas worked efficiently upto a date sayupto (26/12/2016) then the chance (OrThe Probability) is that it will workefficiently even after this date. If “t”denotes the time instant (or date) up towhich a certain object has worked, then Reliability is denotedmathematically by

• Probability(that it will work even afterthe instant t). In mathematical notationit is:

• Reliability = Probability

(Time of working )

• To determine a numerical value ofReliability, we need to collect data forhow long a collection of objects (say200 objects) worked and afterwardsfailed. This data will provide a value ofReliability.

In electrical engineering, while studyingsignals and systems for the purpose ofanalysis and/or design, FourierTransform is the necessary ‘evil’ whichone comes across frequently. Actually, this a strong mathematical tool whichcreates another view of the signals andsystems under study, in addition to theusual time-or space-domainrepresentation. This other view isspectral i.e. in frequency domain whichhugely facilitates one’s understanding ofthe concepts like bandwidth, filteringetc. This frequency-domain perspectiveis created by calculating FourierTransform of the function under study,be it a signal or response function of asystem.

With the development of technology, the practical implementation of systemsdoing processing of signals hasbecome primarily digital. Digitalsystems are inherently discrete i.e. they

deal with and process functions in theform of discrete samples or numbers. Thus, the Fourier Transform which iscalculated on paper as a continuoustype function, becomes a sequence ofcomplex numbers in a digital systemlike processor. This sequence of FourierTransform samples is called DiscreteFourier Transform (DFT).

Thanks to the pioneering work ofCooley and Tukey in 1965 -- whoseobjective was to develop fast algorithmto analyze the seismic data arising fromthe Soviet nuclear tests -- therespawned Fast Fourier Transform (FFT),the fast algorithm to compute DFT. Thisfast algorithm, which implements thefundamental butterfly computationrepeatedly, reduces the complexity ofcalculating DFT from O(N2) to O(N log2N) where N is the size of DFT. It was dueto the development of this fastcomputing algorithm only that

frequency-domain processing becamethe preferred technique in many caseswhile implementing signal processingsystems. Today FFT has wide rangingapplications in engineering andmathematics like spectral analysis, block filtering of long data, computingof long polynomial multiplication etc.Owing to its importance, FFT wasincluded in the ‘top 10 algorithms of20th century’ by the IEEE journal ofComputing in Science & Engineering inits Jan/Feb 2000 issue.

The progress of a country dependsupon the level of education in thepopulation, including both men andwomen. Unfortunately, it seems thatPakistan has not been able to graspthis important fact yet. For thebetterment of the country, theeducational system should be givenfirst priority, especially the technicaleducation of women. This educationwould enable women to become moreactive members of the society.

Time has proven that women are hardworking and technically sound. Theyconsistently produce excellent resultsin the educational field, which showstheir talent and integrity. Now, they areworking in different fields as doctors, engineers, architects, designers, programmers, researchers, air-craftengineers and even as pilots. Women

aircraft engineers are very well knownin air lines because of their excellenttechnical knowledge and devotion totheir work. Some of the technicalinstitutions are headed by womenengineers and their progress isexcellent in all respect.

In the field of medical research, aPakistani women scientist hasdeveloped quite effective methods tokill cancer cells without damaging thehealthy cells of the human body.Research of this magnitude couldgreatly benefit a large population ofpatients and help in defeating thisserious disease.

In the field of pharmaceutical research, patents for different medicines havebeen prepared by research scientists, mostly the Pakistani women. Besidesthat, the study of different materials and

their use in the fabrication of devicesare also performed by Pakistani womenengineers. Women engineers arecapable of handling many responsiblepositions at a time because of theirability to multitask and handledifficulties with patience and hard work.

In conclusion, women and men are likethe two wheels of a nation’s cart, butwith one wheel jammed, the nationcannot move forward. Now, is the righttime to redouble our efforts to correctthe past mistakes and include womenin national building activities, particularly in the important technicalfields. If the vital role of women isrecognized by our society, it could leadto a better and successful future forPakistan.
