STB-Commissioned Research Highlights Four Distinct Profiles and Country-Level

Differences of Travellers in Asia

Singapore, 22 October 2015 –AsianBusinessTravellersarenowenjoyinggreaterautonomyanddemandingmoreflexibletravel policies, according to the findings of a commissionedreport on “Asian Business Travellers” released by theSingaporeTourismBoard(STB)today.MorethanhalfofAsianBusinessTravellersviewworktripsfundamentallyasatravelexperience,with69percentofthemexercisingmorefreedomwhenchoosingtheirairlinesorhotels.

Conducted by McKinsey & Company, the “Asian BusinessTravellers” report surveyed over 2,500 people across fivekeymarketsinAsia–Singapore,India,Indonesia,JapanandChina, which representmore than78.8%ofAsia’sbusinesstravel spend. The research also analysed booking andspendingpatterns fromdataprovidedbyAmadeusandVisarespectively, which revealed further behavioural insights ofmodern-dayAsianBusinessTravellers.

Asia’s Empowered Travellers – Where Business Meets Leisure

Asian Business Travellers – Distinct, Diverse, Dynamic

While the riseofAsianBusinessTravellersposes significantopportunitiesfortheindustry, travelcompanieswillfirstneedto understand the distinctive characteristics of the region’sheterogeneous markets. The study revealed four distinctarchetypes of Asian Business Travellers, eachwith differentmotivations of travel.  Differences between travellers fromemergingordevelopedmarkets, whosehabitsandpreferenceswere largely influenced by their home country and culturalbackground.

Stereotypical Suits: Thesemadeup32percent ofthosesurveyed,andweretypicallytravellersover35years old (61% of Stereotypical Suits) who valuedconvenience above other factors. This archetypeismorepronounced in India than in othermarkets, where travellers aremore adept at adopting digitalplatformstofacilitatetravelprocesses.

Service Seekers: Accounting for another third ofthose surveyed, Chinese and Indonesian businesstravellersformthebulkofthisgroup(59%ofServiceSeekers)whoplaceahighpremiumonserviceandother ‘feel good’ factors. These travellers tend tolook for distinctive travel experiences, with 94%ofthe segment willing to pay for additional services–making them themost lucrative targets for traveloperators.

Points Maximisers: Comprising a majority ofSingaporeansandJapanesebusinesstravellers(67%ofPointMaximisers),thisgroupseestravellingasanopportunity tomaximise loyalty rewards,prioritisingcomfortovercost–only25percentofthemarewillingto fly low-cost carriers. Interestingly, Singaporeansand Japanese are more budget-conscious thantravellersfromothercountries.

Belt Tighteners: This segment of travellers (17%of those surveyed) is the most value-conscious,73percent ofwhich travelmostly arounddomesticmarkets.

Travel operators will thus have to offer more individualisedtravelexperiences, whilstensuringgreaterlevelsofserviceandconvenienceatthesametime.
