WednesdayNightsinOctoberOctober will be filled with fun and learning.
And you are invited to be a part of all of it!
Look at these offerings:
October 14 – It’s time for another Hymn
Sing! We will gather together to sing your
favorite hymns. Be ready to share a hymn,
and perhaps a story that goes along with it. October 21 – It’s time to continue looking at
our spiritual gifts. We will look at the many ways in which God has blessed our
church—and you are an important part of that. We will be
consider the results of this last summer’s 3 Colors of Min-
istry study. If you have a book, but haven’t filled out the
questionnaire, you have time to do so now. Let Pastor
Cheryl know if you would like to visit about your results.
Or if you would like a book, let Pastor Cheryl know, be-
cause we still have a few available. Even if you didn’t take
part in last summer’s combined Sunday School study,
come and help us discover the areas where we, as a
church, are most gifted, and those areas where we can use
some work.
October 28 – Fall fun night! Plan on having a fun time as
we gather together for games, costumes, and more.

Within the next few weeks, Justice Matters will be con-
ducting our house meeting process, gathering together
in homes across Lawrence to share the work of justice.
Last year, First Baptist joined with twenty other congre-
gations to share this important process. This year, you
will be invited to join in a house meeting to learn more
about justice (and injustice) in our community, and how
you can help to respond. We hope to contact every
FBC member to participate in this important work, so
expect a call in the coming days!
Worship Series October 11-25
Historians tell us that cultural change in our world is happening not only rapidly, but expo-
nentially. Not only do we see changes in technology, communication, and current events,
but also in our ways of understanding moral, ethical, and cultural shifts as well. As societal
norms and mores are being defined and re-defined at a breakneck pace, assumptions about
what is “right” and “wrong” are not as clear as they once were. Our beliefs about war, vio-
lence, sexuality, personal behavior, and a host of other issues are more complex and less pre-
dictable then they once were.
What is a Christian to do?
As we watch so much change around us, how can we speak a word of truth? How can we know the truth? Can
we even use the word “truth” anymore? How can we know what God wants for our world? What do the life and
teachings of Christ speak to our context? What should we believe?
Throughout the weeks of October, we will explore these questions together, conversing with the New Testa-
ment book of James. While James is simple, clear, and blunt., he is a force for love and not bluster. You are in-
vited as together we learn from James, growing in knowledge and wisdom. Join us in the coming weeks!
October 11: How Do We Make Judgments in a Changing World? (James 1.19-27)
October 18: What Happens When we Disagree? (James 2.8-26)
October 25: Is there Room for Doubt? (James 1.2-8)
RIGHT
&
Wrong
In 2011, our church sent a mission team to Haiti to begin
work on a school on the outskirts of Cap Haitian. While the
construction has been slow, we received this week a good
word about the work continuing: Let us continue to pray
for the work of ABC missionaries and all who bring hope
and grace to the people of Haiti.
“Dear Loved Ones. Greet-
ings! Please find here the
progress of the school. The
walls for the first part are
over. Slowly we are all
making great progress.
May God bless all of you.”
~Nzunga Mabudiga, ABC-
USA missionary to Haiti.
What Do You Like to Do?
The Nominating Committee had its first meeting last week. Making sure that people have an opportunity to minister in the
areas of their interests and gifts is important to us. So, if there is a particular ministry area that you would like to be a part
of, let us know. We have already begun contacting people about serving next year. If you are contacted, we ask that you
prayerfully consider the request. That can be a trite phrase, but we believe that is an important part of the process. You
may contact anyone on the committee to share an interest. Please pray for all people who are considering these positions
of service.
Thank you, the Nominating Committee:
Tim Bonner, Chair; Carolyn Carlson, Jenny Purvis, Rev. Cheryl Harader
