Directorate of Indian Systems of Medicine, J&K It is a well established fact that the world is looking towards alternative systems of medicine including Unani system of medicine for improving health standards of people. In most of these systems herbs with medicinal value are used for treatment of various diseases in addition to other proven methods, so there is a growing global demand of medicinal plants. The global herbal supplements and remedies market was estimated at US$ 83 billion annually in 2008 (WHO) and is forecasted to reach US$ 93.15 billion by the year 2015 and to US$ 5 trillion by the year 2050 (Korea IT Times 12th March, 2012), spurred by increasing incidence of aging population and consumer awareness about general health and well being. Intrinsic benefits including greater efficacy, little or no side effects, economical and increasing inclination towards healthier natural herbs and botanical derivatives promise a huge growth in this sector. India being the hub of alternative medicine and the World leader in Unani Medicine provides considerable share in herbal medicinal market. Among all States of India, Jammu and Kashmir has a vast potential in this sector. Nearly 50% of plant species described in British Pharmacopeia have been reported to grow in Kashmir of which 572 species of aromatic and medicinal plants have been discovered till now. Many species of herbs extracted from Kashmir have gained world fame due to their medicinal/aromatic values and these include Podophyllum emodi (Himalayan May Apple), Aconitum heterophyllum (Aconitum), Texas baccata (Common Yew), Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender), Colchicum luteum (Autumn Crocus), Saussurea costus (Costus) and different species of Artemesia (Wormwood). Botanical observers world- over believe that Jammu and Kashmir can become a leading herbal exporter in the future if its herbal treasure is harnessed properly. Scientific research and clinical trials corroborating safety claims of herbal supplements and remedies remain a critical factor in determining long-term success in growth of alternative system of medicine including Unani System. Therefore, sustainable and scientific growth of alternative system of medicine is an essential need of the present era for providing people with vast and scientifically proven methods of treatment and ways for improvement in quality of life. The Unani system is a time-tested system of medicine for improving health standards and treatment of various ailments, both communicable and non- communicable, as well as various lifestyle disorders. However, the system needs sustainable scientific advancements in order to improve the worldwide health scenario and broad based deliberations among various researchers and medical practitioners of Unani medicine which would prove an important step in this direction. The Directorate of Indian Systems of Medicine, Jammu & Kashmir, therefore has decided to hold a global conference to bring the various organizations connected with this system of medicine worldwide on one platform to discuss the progress made in Unani system of medicine and recommend the future course of action for bringing this system of medicine on the forefront of human health care.
