Hey Key Club! How was your October?! Mine was great, and I will miss
RTC sooo much! I will never forget the craziness that goes
down at RTC! While it was one of the month’s biggest events,
let’s not forget about the other equally important events we
had in October. In this edition, you can read about a few
members’ experiences. Also, don’t forget to write articles as
the newsletter can only come out if I receive some! Now let’s

Reminders:
Member of the Month Why did I pick Michelle as Member of the Month, you may or may not be asking yourself?
LOL (same question from last month)
I picked Michelle, because of her amazing dedication to this club. She alone, raised over
$100 for UNICEF!!! Say what.... Yeah she did. She is always at every event and meeting,
and she is an admirable person. I highly respect all the work Michelle puts into the club,
and she makes the rest of us look like we’re not trying hard enough. Thank you for all of
your dedication and commitment. Congrats Michelle! :D

Operation School Bell By: Ethan Nihipali
On Saturday, October 1st, Clark Key Club went to the Assistance League of Las Vegas Thrift Shop to
help out kids from Kit Carson Elementary School.
While arriving there, about 40 of us waited in the main lobby in front of the building, but one of the thrift shop
supervisors, Ms. Kjersti, took us and gave us a tour of the place. She told us a story about these kids:
Many of the kids have neither a home or a lot of clothes. If they do have a home, they live without the bare
necessities, like for instance, some kids don't have a bed to sleep on or a functional family. Some of these kids'
parents are either drug addicts, alcoholics, or perhaps just hitting hard times with the recession of today's
economy. An average night of these kids consists of eating granola and drinking water for dinner, or perhaps
not eating anything at all. A variety of kids that visit ALLV get abused and are afraid of help, or difficult to help
with what they've been given. However, this day changed these kids' lives and hopes, and from this
experience, I know that this has given me insight of what goes on.
Ashley Hill and I were partnered up together and assigned a kid when given a list of who they are(name, age),
what they need(clothes, shoes, supplies), and some physical information(height, weight, sizes) about them. We
got an apron with pockets to help carry certain things, two Sharpie markers to mark names on their jackets and
books, a pen to fill out their info sheet, a pair of scissors to cut off tags, and a tape measure to measure their
waist to make sure of things. The reason why we have to mark their names on their jackets and books, cut off
their tags, and measure them is because some of these parents are greedy and want things for themselves or
they would return things to not let their child have these things. Also, a part of our job was to have fun with
them and reassure them that they were the best children to walk this planet.
Also, Kit Carson was a mandatory uniform school, meaning they get the following: 2 uniform shirts, 2 uniform
pants or shorts (or 1 uniform pant and 1 uniform short), I pair of jeans, 1 jacket, 1 sweatshirt, 1 pair of shoes, 6
pairs of socks, 6 pairs of underwear, 2 undershirts, (if female, 2 camisoles or a bra), a health kit (filled with soap,
shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, a comb, etc), school supplies, and at the end, a toy car from Toys 4 Smiles.
To get started, Ashley and I were given an assigned kid, so when looking for him in a separate room, he was
absent, so we just filled his bag with a few stuff that was his size and based off of his favorite color (blue). After
finishing, we were assigned another kid, a female named Ja Liyah, a 3rd grader. She was into reading, learning,
and she says she does really good in school. She got a pair of pink shoes that fit her perfectly, and she got a
pair of purple jeans she absolutely loved and even got to wear them out of the thrift shop. After taking her
back to the room with the children, Ashley and I were assigned another kid, Kevin, a 1st or 2nd grader, and he
was very quiet, but he was so happy when he got his own stuff. When we took him back into the room with the
children, he said "Thank you!" with his high voice, and smiled. That was very touching.
Then, we were assigned two kids, Leonardo and Alejandro. Leonardo couldn't speak English at all (I don't
understand Spanish), and it was very difficult for me to help him out, but thanks to Sebastian Cintron for taking
him under his wing, I'm pretty sure he was a pretty happy guy. As for Alejandro, Ashley took care of him very
well as he seemed to fit his first choices. He was very happy with what he got and once he got back into the
room with the other kids, they got pizza! Happy faces filled the room, and that was a pleasure to see.
Seeing everyone else helping out these kids, kids that entered a world they don't deserve because of outside
factors they have no control over, was absolutely incredible to see. I never realized how much I have
compared to the child Ashley and I were assigned. Sure, they're younger but their lives are way more important
than ours. Also, observing these kids having fun with their big imaginations was very pleasing to see. Also, one
kid flicked Brent on the back of the head. No idea why, but that was funny.
Anyways, this was an amazing event, and I can honestly say that we should do this again sometime.

Toys 4 Smiles By: Lisa Chong
Toys 4 Smiles By: Kristine Morishige
Awkwardly entering a small building, I was worried at first wondering what I was doing.
The light smell of wood, almost gone, still lingered lightly in the air, and my sister and I were
greeted nicely by one of the few people who we would be working with. Seemingly early,
there weren’t many people in the building at the time, but at one point in time we were able
to receive a mini tour of the place, learning that all of the wood they use to create the toy cars
are donated, and that all are sent out for no profit. The only jobs that we were able to do
(being that all of us were under 18) was tracing out the cars, putting wheels in, and painting
the completed toys with mineral oil. Either or, the quiet peaceful atmosphere gradually
became lively, filled with the spirited Key Club-like feeling. One of our fellow key clubbers
actually came up with a family of cars (which eventually was put away somewhere, sadly) as
we were painting the cars with the mineral oil, hands becoming soft (but kind of slimy.. ew-ish)
and time flying by much quicker than expected. Eventually, we were done working, and were
able to spend some time talking to the people who were in charge of us. Turns out that they
just volunteer in their free time to do this, which I find kind of endearing- knowing people do
things like this without having to be told to. The event, and also being my first as part of key
club, was a pleasant experience.
On October 8, 2011, I went with Clark Key Club and 10 of its members to a local
organization called Toys 4 Smiles. In the small workshop, the workers took all of us on a
tour of how the cars are made and where they go. All of us worked together in
stenciling, assembling wheels, oiling the cars, and packing up boxes. Because all of the
wood is donated by companies, the workshop is able to donate the toys to children in
need. Although all of the stations were fun, my favorite part of this workshop was
definitely assembling the wheels. We succeeded in oiling and packing up many cars
that day. There was also complementary ice cream at the end; it was delicious.

Decker ES Festival By: Billy Wang
On October 21st, 2011 Clark Key Club was invited to help out at Decker
Elementary School for a Halloween Carnival. Ten students volunteered to help with the
setup of the carnival from 3-5 PM and ten students volunteered to help with the carnival
and cleanup from 5-8 PM. During setup, the administrator of the carnival, Ms. Sherry,
assigned each and every member a job to complete. The Key Club members all
excitedly jumped at the prospect and began with haste. Others jumped slower than the
rest, but the job was completed and everyone had a fun time helping out. When 5
o’clock came around, Ms. Sherry gave out a huge list of jobs that could not be filled
with just the ten members who volunteered for the carnival. Seeing this, the first ten
members decided to pitch in and help out through the whole carnival. At the end of
the day the carnival was a huge success and little belly button kids personally came up
to me to thank Key Club for helping out as well as make fun of my costume… However,
the members did truly do a fantastic job in passing out candy, selling tickets, and
directing the happy trick-or-treaters. Ms. Sherry even gave the members free tickets to
spend on the carnival. Everyone rushed to the giant hamster balls, but of course, they
closed right when we were next. However, everyone did great and had fun. Thanks a
lot Key Clubbers!

Going Back in Time: Past Events
Regional Training Conference (RTC) By: Henry Teng
RTC 2011- it was huge, it was big, and it was fun. Hundreds of kids from all across the
district convened onto a single high school to breathe, eat, and talk Key Club. Old friends,
having been separated from each other for months on end, finally get to see each other
again, and friendships live on. Workshops meant to educate the masses on Key Club and
prepare potential leaders for future careers bond the student bodies together into a single
family, and coupled with social activities like the evening dance and charity walks, a RTC is
generally aimed to be fun and energetic. However, this year, several things improved from all
previous RTC’s. Having experienced 2 previous conferences, I can safely say that this RTC
improved in many aspects. First of all, the situation of feeding several thousand hungry teens
during lunch was alleviated very well this year by having individual pre-packed lunches- this I
felt was one of the best ideas Key Club has come up with in years. Second of all, the dance
was not cancelled. RTC 2010 was, unfortunately, a horrible conference- the entire school got
rained in, humidity built up in the halls, and the dance was even cancelled. This year,
however, there was no rain, and thus, everything ran smoothly- the dance was even held.
Third of all, this year, possibly one of the best changes in procedure finally happened- schools
were kept together via wristbands, and travelled to workshops together, instead of being
hacked into separate groups with different wristbands. This kept school spirit and morale high,
and proved very effective at the spirit rally. Thus, even with the slightest changes, RTC 2011
proved to be one of the better Key Club conferences that I’ve attended in my three years
with the organization.
Clark Key Club shows their spirit at the rally. Henry and other members participate in an ice breaker

Conclusion
President’s Message
Hey my wonderful Key Club members. We have served over 2000 hours together. We
BEE Beast!
I’m so impressed with how much service you are all putting into this club. It’s inspiring. I
hope that I see many of you go to District Convention this year!!
BUT!!!
Let me say this plainly. I love and respect all of you, but you must reciprocate that
respect back to the rest of the board. I expect all of you to treat every officer with high
regards. I also expect all of you to be quiet when asked at an event. Also, take charge
of something at an event and do what needs to be done without having someone to
tell you.
Another point I would like to bring up is the issue of Fall Rally. I know that is why many of
you joined, but Fall Rally is not Key Club. Key Club is about service, leadership, and the
building of an international family. You must understand this. Fall Rally incorporates all
of that. We meet friends who we have not seen since DCON. We raise money for
Pediatric Trauma Prevention. We cheer our hearts out for pride.
Continue to serve and become inspired.
In the hopes that you stay after Fall Rally has ended,
Brent Mayfield
