Dick Christian was the guestwizard for the October meeting of

the youth group “Counts of Conjuring”. The lesson coveredtwo different effects. He presented"Sucker Monte" (a three cardmonte effect). Several differentversions of thetrick were taughtand each studentreceived all thenecessary cardsfor each versionalong with illustrated instructions.

The second effect was the classic"Buddha Papers." After the trick was demonstrated the students

were givenillustrated

instructionsand materials.

They eachassembled

their own setof "Buddha Papers" as part of thesession.

Don’t forget to encourage ayouth to attend the Ring 50 MYI.The youth meeting starts at 6:00

pm at the Holiday Inn in

Alexandria. The Youth Ring isopen for children ages 7-17.Please let Theo Rushin, Chief Wizard for the youth group, knowif you are bringing any youths sothat we can be better prepared for

them.

Thanks to Ken Trombly for aterrific presentation on "Paper Treasures." It has inspired me to

explore more information on thehistory of magic. I was

particularly fascinated by the 1897receipt for magic props purchased

by Houdini and then a follow up poster of Houdini with those same props on a nearby table and in hishands.

Next month we have our ownLinking Ring magic reviewers

performing their favorite magicmaterial that they reviewed for the

magazine. It could also be their least favorite--we are openminded. Reviewers--please emailme if you want to perform.

Future themes that I am  pondering include a night for Children's magic and an eveningwith a panel of experts on subjectslike illusions, close-up, parlor, etcwith a Q&A theme.

Finally, please remember thatour own Wayne Alan is

performing "Wonders andWizardry" on Monday night, Oct25, at the National Theater.

T o n y C u r t i s

“ H o u d i n i ” D i e sTony Curtis passed away on September 29th 2010.He starred in over 60 film roles and made

numerous TV appearances. In the magic world hewas most famous for the movie “Houdini”. This isa highly entertaining film has Tony plays HarryHoudini, the legendary escape artist. We seeHoudini's early life in the circus, the meeting of hisfuture wife (Janet Leigh) and some of his mostfamous tricks. Curtis, a talented amateur magician,

performed most of his own tricks in this film.In the film he runs into

a prop sword handle andruptures his appendix, then almost drowns in the

torture tank trick and dieson the stage in the armsof his wife. In real life hewas punched in thestomach by a collegestudent who had heardthat Houdini couldwithstand any blowwithout harm. This did,

indeed, rupture his appendix. He later collapsed onstage, was taken to the hospital and died there.Although Houdini didn't die onstage at a

Halloween performance, as this film would haveyou believe, he did, indeed, die on Halloween,1926, several weeks after his last stage

performance. To this day, in Houdini's memory,October 31st is celebrated as International MagicDay.

This movie has it all; a love story, suspense, comedy, and of course magic. We will miss TonyCurtis.

You Know That You're A Magician When...

♦ The only unbent forks in your house are plastic.♦ You never throw old decks away because "I can

make something out of it"♦ You have never been to the loony bin, yet youown a straight jacket.♦ After viewing magic on TV, everyone in theroom looks at you asks, "How'd they do that?"And, all you do is smile and say, "It's really easy if you think about it, but magicians can tell." Andyou're really thinking "How the heck did they dothat?"
