Home? Let me preface the story with some background.Perhaps sip on your tea or coffee as we go…

It was the just after the door closed on the RoaringTwenties and in the dark hallway following Wall Street’sBlack Friday back in ’29. Fancy dresses and fashionablehairdos had given way to hobos and little pay for hardwork, if a job could be found. It was the Great Depression.

The exact year was of our story is February of 1936*. Onthis day, it was the middle of a roaring twenty-mile perhour plus blizzard in the heartland of Wisconsin.

Little seven year-old Paul Peterson and his sister six year-old sister,Evelyn, were about to leave for home from their rural elementaryschool in ruralGlenmore,Wisconsin. They did not know it, buttheywere about towalk right into snow-white danger. The walk

was simple - leave the school and ramble one quarter-milewest, turn and go one and three-quarter miles due north tothe farm. They had done it scores of times already in theiryoung lives. What was normally a cakewalk was about toturn into a deadly hazardous hike. Would they make it home?

Fast-forward some seventy-five years… Evelyn and Paul havegrown up. It’s Evelyn’s funeral service in September of 2009;she was eighty when the Lord took her home. The funeralparlor is overflowing with family, friends, neighbors and thosewho knew Evelyn. Can you see them in your imagination?

When the officiating pastor gave the benediction and closed hisbook, Evelyn’s brother Paul, now eighty-one, wished toaddress the crowd. He rose to his feet from the second row.It was if the silence in the room got louder. This grown-upbig brother had been carrying a story for decades, one that hadnot only shaped his life but also saved it. His storytelling words, simple but powerful, unfolded like the wrappings on a well-kept treasure. The details, left to the imagination of the hearersin the parlor, every ear and eye riveted their attention on thisgrown boy who had just given is sister back to her Maker…

Paul’s story went like something like this…

“Evelyn and I, when we were very young, left our countryschool at the end of the day and headed toward home, downthe country road. But a snowstorm had blown in; there was astrong wind from the north. The snow was deep; the walkingwas hard and tiring. There was drifting. Evelyn [6 years old]did not know if she could go on, her little legs emptied of theirenergy. She told me she wanted to lie down in the soft snowand take a rest, maybe even nap. Even though I was young, Ihad sense enough to know that was not a good idea. Thesnow was coming down so hard and the wind so strong, hadwe lain down we would have been covered with snow in lessthan five minutes. While we were stopped, not knowing just

what to do or if were going to make ithome, I saw a figure appearing throughthe snow, it was coming closer… it wasour dad. Mom had sent him to find us.Dad reached down, picked Evelyn upand carried her while I walked behindhim. He broke that strong north wind forme and I walked in his footsteps…”

The now-grown boy, Paul, sat down, hisprecious story delivered. And yet, unknown to him, he was the one whoreally delivered the homily that day.Everyone in the room realized that Pauland Evy’s parent’s love in all probabilityprevented their own funerals, someseventy-five years earlier.

When I got home from the interment Itold my wife that story. She sawsomething in it that I did not…Whenlittle Paul and Evelyn’s mother sent herhusband out on that hazardous lifesavingerrand, she knew there was the possibilitythat she could lose her entire family thatday, husband, children and all.

After she said, “Honey, find them andbring them home!”, this would nothave been time for the dishes, but forrestless and eager prayer. One canimagine her standing at a drafty-frosted windowpane, watching, handsfolded and eyes peeled.

There is much life-application toPaul’s story, eh? Life is hazardous. We

take daily risks. Decisions bringconsequence. Prayer is not only a God-given communication tool, butstrongly encouraged, needful andresult-full - but not always providingthe answer we want. As parents wesacrifice for our children, as ourHeavenly Father did for us. We arecalled to be selfless, unconditional inour loving, putting our old slothfulselves aside, then displaying the visionand reflection of our Saviour. Familiesare often bonded not only through theblessing experiences but also throughthe challenges. We could go on.

When getting Paul’s permission to tellthis story, he shared what a wonderfulhomecoming it was that day, a warmfire, a hot meal, dry clothes and beingsurrounded by a family full of love.Paul may have missed his calling, afine preacher-storyteller he is!

God bless your toes and everywherethey goes, as you walk with the LivingSaviour who carries us!

* This year was according to Paul’smemory and the Wisconsin weatherrecords confirm, “February 8-10,1936 – Wisconsin Statewide -Blizzard - severe drifting.”

GOT NEWS? – Adeline, your RovingReporter is on the hunt for the latest scoop!Call: 468-2061, E-mail: [email protected]

Did you know OSLC has a program wherein yourfamily can automatically have your contributiondeducted from your checking or savings account?“Simply Giving” is very simple. Pick up a form fromthe office or a rack in the hallway by the office. Fill itin, return to Michelle, Pastor Dave or Pastor Greg.

Here’s how it works: Indicate on the “Simply Giving”form (1) how much to give, (2) what day you want itwithdrawn, and (3) designate where you want thecontribution to go, i.e., building fund, operatingfund, general fund, etc.

That’s it!

In three years of “Simply Giving” I’ve saved over100 checks and I don’t wake up Sunday morningtrying to remember if I’ve written the check andwhere it is. It’s done - automatically. You can changethe amount or stop at any time.

Now, that’s SIMPLE!

Try GivingWhile Still LivingA rich man went to his pastor and asked, “Why dopeople call me stingy? I’ve said over and over againthat when I die I will give every thing to the church?”

The pastor responded with this story:

In the farm yard, the pig was unpopular and the cowbeloved. The pig complained to the cow, “Everyonespeaks warmly of you. They think you are sogenerous because you give milk every day. Whatabout me? I give bacon, ham, bristle for brushes andfeet for pickling. Yet no one likes me. Why is that?”

Gently as possible, the cow said, “Perhaps it’sbecause I give while I’m still living.” Try givingwhile still living. It speaks very highly of you.

Joseph needed some supplies from a cupboard in theSunday School room. This cupboard was seldomused but it had a combination lock. Joseph didn’tknow the combination so he called on Pastor Dave togive it a try. Dave placed his fingers on the lock’sdial and raised his eyes heavenward for a moment. Then he confidently spun the dial and opened thelock. Joseph was stunned and impressed with thisdemonstration of faith.

Seeing his expression, Dave patted him on theshoulder and grinned. “Joseph, look up. The numbersare written on the ceiling.”

Look Up

The weather may have been abnormally cool thissummer. However, there was nothing abnormalabout the offerings, which fell off this summer justlike past years. Our actual offerings ($335,894) areshort of the budget for the year through August byabout 10%.

The good news is that actual receipts for Jan-August 2009 are a little ahead for the same periodin 2008. Let’s pray for normal weather and ampleharvest. As always, we ask that you take a look atyour summer giving and make any catch-updonations you think are called for.

TheReformationIt’s just about here, All Saint’s Eve, Friday October31, followed by All Saint’s Day, marking the birth ofthe Protestant Reformation. Like a precious old book,we may want to dust off our recollection of theReformation and its birth. The “Reformer” was theHoly Spirit working in human history, when, back “OnNovember 10, 1483, Hans and Margarete Luther wereblessed by God with the gift of a son.

The next day the baby boy was baptized and given thename of the saint of the day, Martin. We thank God forthe precious gifts He has given to us through the workof his faithful servant, Dr. Martin Luther… it is for theclear and penetrating voice of the living Gospel which

resounded from Luther’spulpit, classroom andhome. The vibrant andjoyous Good Newspoured forth from thepen of Luther, obliterating centuriesof dark ignoranceconcerning the graceof God through Christthe Savior.”(1) We

remember the Reformationin those three simple “Sola”

[Latin for “Alone” or “Only”] terms that appear onour altar, Sola Scriptura [Our only source for truthabout matters of faith is, Only The Scripture]; SolaGratia [It is Only Grace that paid for our sin, and thatgrace was demonstrated and completed on the crosswhen Christ, God in the form of a man, paid for 100%of your sins. We cannot rescue ourselves from this sin-death trap, only He could do it for us]; Sola Fide[Only Faith in our Lord’s gift of grace saves us, andthat faith itself is a gift from God!]. The church of the16th century was “reformed” when Martin Lutherpeeled off the layers of human tradition and tookbelievers back to the Bible, where we learn of thosethree “Solas”.

How about checking out a Luther book or film fromour library?

ConfirmationPublicExaminationNow in our fifth year, our Level III Confirmation studentswill demonstrate their faith verbally, through a PublicExamination. We are confident in these student’s faith andability to express it! The examiner and the student have atrust of each other, the examiner promising not to let thestudent fail, and the student trusting the examiner’squestions to be fair, kind and clear. See the Octobercalendar for the date and time. Consider coming to thatworship service!

Why Won’t The PastorsConfirm the Students? One time a few years ago on Confirmation Sunday, allthe students were in the front pews, robed and holdingcarnations. Their parents, grandparents, siblings andsponsors were certainly in the worshipping audience andthere were cakes and casseroles waiting to celebrate theevent later in the day.As the Confirmation service beganthe pastor announced that he had decided not to confirm, not one, not two, but the entire class. The students lookedat each other, puzzled and on the brink ofembarrassment. The folks in the pews became restless. The pastor’s words continued, “We are not going toconfirm you, for on this day you are invited to confirmyour own faith.” And that is just what Confirmation is,not something “done to you”, but personal faith-filledwords, said right out loud, that what was said for them attheir Holy Baptism, they say for themselves. Watch forthe Confirmation service date on this month’s calendarand consider coming to witness it personally.

Riding home after Sunday School, David said tohis father, “Can I ask you a question?”

“Sure,” his father said, “What is it.?”

“Well, the teacher was reading the Bible to us…all about the children of Israel building the temple, the children of Israel crossing the Red Sea, thechildren of Israel making sacrifices. Didn’t thegrown-ups do anything?”
