The Catholic Faith Explained: Next Sunday,

October 13 at 2:00 pm we will have our monthly

Adult Education Program. This month’s topic is on

How Catholics Understand the Bible.

The Catholic Bible: The Bible isn't a book. It's a

library. The Bible is a collection of 73 books

written over the course of many centuries. The

books include royal history, prophecy, poetry,

challenging letters to struggling new faith com-

munities, and believers' accounts of the

preaching and passion of Jesus. Knowing the

genre of the book you are reading will help you

understand the literary tools the author is us-

ing and the meaning the author is trying to

convey.

Children Envelopes: It is never too early to teach

our children and youth on the importance of shar-

ing what they have with others. One way to teach

generosity is using church envelopes. Last week at

religious ed our children and youth were given their

own box of envelopes. The younger children (K -

6th) is the Saints of the Catholic Church Series and

the older children (7th - 12th) is the Disciples &

Miracles Series. Each envelop will teach our chil-

dren a little lesson. On the reverse side, our chil-

dren are encouraged to pray, to use their time and

talent, and to share a part of their treasure.

March For Life Pilgrimage: The Knights of Co-

lumbus are sponsoring a pilgrimage to Washington

DC, leaving on Thursday, January 23 and return-

The Baltimore Catechism: The catechism many

older Catholics were taught was called the Balti-

more Catechism. It received this name from the

fact that in 1884 the bishops of the United States

met in Baltimore Maryland to discuss pastoral

concerns. Baltimore was the first diocese in the

United States. At this meeting the bishops decid-

ed to publish a national catechism. It contained

421 questions and answers in thirty-seven chap-

ters.

The Baltimore Catechism gave unity to

the teaching and understanding of the faith for

millions of immigrant Catholics who populated

American cities, towns, and farms. One result of

the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) was the

publication of the Catechism of the Catholic

Church published in 1994 and the United States

Catholic Catechism for Adults in 2006.

Cancer Walk: St. Paul Church is sponsoring a

Cancer Walk on Saturday, October 19, at 10

AM. All money raised from this walk will go to

local families of present cancer victims presently

going through treatments. The first 50 people who

register will receive free specially marked event

water bottles. Further information and sponsor

Did You Know? The word “catechism” comes

from a Greek word that means “to echo.” Before

the invention of the printing press in 1450, in the

Church and elsewhere learning was mainly an oral

experience. A Church teaching would be recited,

and the listener would be instructed to “echo” it, or

repeat it, until it was learned. This way of learning

has been around since before the Church. Jewish

teachers from both before and after the time of Je-

sus taught the Scriptures by again and again asking

the learner to repeat verses.

The invention of the printing press made it

possible to adapt the “speak and echo” method of

catechesis into a question-and-answer approach

that could be fixed in print. The Church adopted

this approach. It is especially evident in the influ-

ential catechisms of St. Peter Canisius (1521-1597)

and St. Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621).

Second Collection: Today is Respect Life Sunday

and a second collection will be taken up to help

with the expenses of those who will be going on

pilgrimage to Washington, DC in January to partic-

ipate in the March for Life.
