SOURIS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER http://schools.shmb.ca/sci. Number 4, October 12, 2012 NEWS FROM MR. WILLIAMS Hi, everyone. We are supposed to have a couple nice, warm days this weekend. Parents, make sure to get the rakes out so that your children can get the yard tidied up. I know that is what my kids will be doing. Last year, in an effort to reduce the amount of paper we use at the school, we decided to offer an email subscription for the Souris School newsletter. We had over 75 families sign up for the service. This was a great start to going largely paperless. Unfortunately there is one issue with emailing the actual newsletter, that being that often the large size of the file caused email servers to bounce the message back to us. This was as a result of the number of photos that we included in the newsletter. In order to prevent messages from being bounced back to us we would have to reduce the size of all photos prior to submitting them to the newsletter. This process reduces the overall quality of the photo, especially when we print them out in black and white. We believe we have found a solution that will allow us to continue to use high quality colour photos. For today’s newsletter we are going to upload the file to a website called Issuu. Once we do so, we will receive a link that we can attach to an email that we will send out to you. As a parent you simply need to click on the link and you will be taken to our newsletter which is held on this website. All photos will be in colour and we should have no issues with size. For today’s newsletter we will be using the Synrevoice Announcement system to send out newsletters to all students in Gr. 1, 2, 3, and 4. We will also use the existing email list we collected last year to send out the other letters. Paper copies will still be provided to those who do not have internet. As well, we will still have some dropped off at various locations around town. I am truly amazed at the large number of students participating in school activities before, during, and after school. Thanks, students, for taking advantage of the opportunities provided to you. Thank you to all staff members, community members, and, of course, parents for providing this opportunity to our children. Have a great day. HALLOWEEN FOR HUNGER This year our grade 5 classes, along with Mrs. Sobry’s Make Change group, have decided to take part in, “Halloween for Hunger.” We will be collecting non-perishable food items and donating them to our local food bank. Previous years we have gone out and collected money for UNICEF, but this year we decided to keep the donations local. You can still save your extra change and donate it to the, “Pennies for Projector.” If you have a non-perishable food item you would like to donate please drop it off in one of the grade 5 classrooms. •Mrs. Ryckman & Ms O’Brien THANK YOU KATHRYNE Kathryne Leschasin heard of a child in Saskatchewan, who is very sick. Her name is Miranda and her wish was to receive a rainbow from everyone on the planet. We announced it at Souris School and after Kathryne counted them up, there were 479 pictures of rainbows, even including rainbow mobiles, which Kathryne will forward to Miranda. Thank you to the students from Reston and Hartney who also sent some over Special thanks to Kathryne for organizing this. You will help brighten a sick child’s day when she receives this package in the mail.

4 DAY CALENDAR There was a mistake made on the original 4 day calendar. It had February 5th as Day 1, instead of Day 3. You will find the correct version on the Souris School website under Student Links on the left hand side of the page. Yes, we finally got the correct calendar on the site! Gift + Passion = Change Last week the "Make Changers" and Grade 8 students were fortunate to have Karen Donaldson from Free the Children based in Toronto come out to engage them in interactive Social Justice debates on world issues. She put a very thought provoking equation on the board

Gift + Passion = Change. Find something that you are good at. Add it to something you are passionate about. By putting the two together, the possibilities for making a change in the lives of others are endless! We are looking forward to traveling to WE Day at the end of October to see and hear stories of others who have made a difference. Our grade 8s then will be taking action of their own to help those in the community and beyond. •Mrs. Bev Sobry HEAD LICE CHECK This will be an ongoing reminder throughout the year. We remind parents to check heads on Friday evening. This way, if treatment is necessary it can be done on the weekend and children can return to school Monday. This is intended as a preventative reminder. Thanks for you help with this. CAREER EXPLORATION NEWS Friday, November 2 is the Post Secondary Day for all Grade 11’s and 12’s. Universities and Colleges will be in attendance. The list includes Assiniboine Community College, Red River College, University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, University of Regina, Brandon University, Winnipeg Technical College, Providence College and Booth University/College. Students will have a

choice of attending two post secondary institution informative sessions and access display booths. As many of our Grade 12 students are now receiving their acceptance letters to post secondary institutions, the focus turns to scholarships and preparation. Information on program requirements, volunteering, spend a day programs, student loans, financial aid and deadlines are all necessary topics to consider. Stop in at the Career Center for more details.

SOURIS PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL SSPAC Update October 2012

SSPAC is looking for Room Representatives for some classrooms in Grades K-5. Room Reps act as a linkage between parents and teachers, and attend PAC meetings when possible. For example, the teacher may ask the Room Rep to call parents when volunteers or chaperones are needed. In addition, the PAC Secretary position is currently vacant. The position is responsible for taking and distributing meeting minutes and assisting with correspondence. Finally, SSPAC recently distributed a request for information. Anyone wishing to receive information by email or interested in volunteering, please return your form to the school or contact PAC.

EARLY AND MIDDLE YEARS NEWS

Communicating Student Progress: Our grades 1 to 8 students are now set up in our Portal system. This is a means through which our teachers are able to report student progress to parents on a regular basis throughout the year.

Page 3: Oct 12 newsletter

Please be sure to check out your child’s portal to view this information. All families were sent out a sheet in the mail-out packages in late August. Your child’s user name and password were provided. Simply follow these steps.

1. Go to the website: schools.shmb.ca/sci

2. Scroll down the left-hand side to the icon that says “Student Portal” and click

3. Input your child’s username and password.

4. Click on the top tab that says “grades” - a listing of your child’s subjects

will be provided. Teachers will be reporting on the 4 core subjects – ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies.

You will notice that there will be a number beside the concept that the teacher is reporting on. This number will range from 1 to 4. The following rubric represents the student’s progress: 4 – Thorough understanding and in-depth application of concepts and skills 3 - Very good understanding and application of concepts and skills 2 – Basic understanding and some application of concepts and skills 1 – Limited understanding and minimal application of concepts and skills Our ultimate goal is that as the year progresses, we hope students achieve a “4” with the outcomes and concepts that are being taught. If your child has not yet reached that target, that particular outcome/concept is an area that they will continue to work on. For younger students, it is important to remember that not all children develop and learn at the same time or same pace. Some of the skills that they acquire are developmental skills, which children will master at different times. If you have misplaced your child’s username and password, please contact Mrs. Rolfe at

[email protected] or Cynthia Delaurier at [email protected] Also, if you have any questions regarding our new reporting format, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or Mrs. Rolfe.

The Sabres, as a team, ran for over 200 yards and the defense smothered Dauphin’s offense. It was a great team win. The Sabres play here tonight at 4:30 vs Virden. Come out and cheer us on. •Coach Brian Elder RUGBY The Souris Youth Rugby program finished off another season with great success. Kids ages 6-14 were involved and the program had over 50 participants this year. There were four jamborees held in the communities of Boissevain, Minnedosa, Brandon and Souris. The Sabres enjoyed much success on the field and the kids had plenty of fun. The weather also cooperated as the temperatures were warm and there were no rainy days. A big thank you to our coaches who volunteered their time to helping the kids. The coaches were Christie Tuttosi, Amy Tuttosi, Emily Tuttosi, Charlotte West and Carla Cooke. These ladies allowed Mr. Yon to have bit of a break every now and then! Another big thank you to Belinda West and Roxanne Scraba. These ladies organized the canteen and the kit shop. Thanks to the parents who volunteered their time at the canteen as well.

We're looking forward to next season and we will be looking for more volunteers and help. Even if you don't know much about the game, feel free to raise your hand if you want to get involved. The success of the program will largely depend on the volunteer base. Thanks again to all those involved and congrats on another great season!
