Seneca, the largest city in Oconee County, was founded in 1874. Early development of the city revolved around textiles making, Seneca a marketing and shipping point for cotton. Today, Seneca is better known for its downtown historic district centered around Ram Cat Alley, and shopping, dining and lodging opportunities. Somewhere between studying the historic 19th century architecture and choosing from the abundance of recreational opportunities, tourists and residents alike will have no problem finding their place in Seneca. WALHALLACity Hall: 206 N Church St., Walhalla, SC (864) 638-4343

Walhalla was founded in 1850 as a land expansion by German Settlers out of

Charleston, South Carolina. It is the County Seat.. The area’s history is shown through the historic churches, home and museums scattered around town. Approximately 4300 citizens call Walhalla home. The tree lined Main Street has a number of antique and specialty shops, as well as a variety of restaurants. Walhalla’s culture is celebrated every year with Oktoberfest and Mayfest.

Walhalla’s history and legends continue at Issaqueena Falls and Stumphouse Tunnel located just a few minutes from downtown. Come to Walhalla. Enjoy a town that celebrates the past and embraces the present.

Chartered in 1875 the City of Westminster has a Mayor/Council form of government. The City provides complete municipal services and utilities to its approximately 2,700 residents.

A treasure trove of unique architecture, Westminster boasts more than one hundred homes that are unique to the late 1800’s and turn-of-the-century. Our residential and business historical districts offer a visual

Oconee is steeped in rich heritage and tradition. Originally a Cherokee nation, General Andrew Pickens and Colonel Benjamin Cleveland founded and negotiated the territory for the fledgling colony, finally settling in Cheohee Valley near the present-day Tamassee community. From 1800 until 1814, Oconee was a part of Pendleton District and in 1826, this District was divided into Anderson and Pickens Districts. During Reconstruction-era South Carolina, Pickens County was split in half with the western half named Oconee in 1868.

An influx of German immigrants, who had found Charleston unwelcoming and difficult to succeed in, brought fresh blood into the mountains with the founding of Walhalla in 1850. Railroads brought more towns into the predominantly rural county, with the founding of Seneca at the intersection of the Blue Ridge Railroad and the Air Line Railroad in 1874. Westminster was founded in 1875 at a water stop on the Southern Railway.

The lakes are also a great place to fish. Landings throughout the county give access to lake fishing to even the smallest water craft and the Oconee lakes are even home to large fishing tournaments including a FLW tournament this year, which brought in more than 150 anglers from all over the nation.

If a faster, more intense ride on the water peaks your interetest, the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River may be more your style. Guided rafting tours are available on this river, which was the site used for the filming of the 1970s movie “Deliverance.”

With high-quality dedicated teachers and partnerships to help prepare students for years beyond the classroom, the School District of Oconee County offer students an

educational experience with an eye on the future.

The school district boasts a 23 to 1 student to teacher ratio with both student and teacher attendance reaching nearly

96 percent. About 63 percent of teachers in the school district hold some type of advanced degree. The district spends an average of $9,966 per pupil.

Those efforts have shown results with four-year graduation rates topping 80 percent at each of the high schools in the county. In the Palmetto Assessment of State Standards, the district saw improving scores in many categories with nearly 70 percent of students passing the test.

Oconee ranked above the state in SAT mean scores in reading and math. In the ACT testing, Oconee’s composite score of 21 was higher than the state average of 20.6. Three schools – Walhalla, Seneca and West-Oak – met or exceeded the state ACT average. Walhalla High was one of the top performers in the state in ACT testing with a composite score of 23.1.

Performance for 2012, as one of the state’s highest performing Title I schools.

While the district is preparing many students for four-year university programs and beyond, it also seeks to prepare students for quality jobs here in the county.

Through a partnership with Tri-County Technical College, students are gaining the education and skills needed for high paying jobs with local industries. Some partnerships have students being transported to Tri-County Tech for classes and others, such as a partnership with the Hamilton Career Center near Seneca bring instructors from Tech to teach programs such as HVAC to students here.
