The Officer’s Cornerby Rod Kenly, Executive Vice President

As I sit here at my messy desk, Thanksgiving is in the rear view mirror and Christmas is just beyond the curve in the horizon. Therefore, I’m hoping you had a great Thanks-giving, and will have a wonderful Christmas. For me, it’s difficult to realize this year has gone by in a flurry.

We have the upcoming Sedona Verde rally at Camp Verde, AZ. The rally to be held February 26-March 3, 2017. It will feature five nights camping with full hookups in a scenic RV park between Flagstaff and Phoenix. Four hot break-fasts, three catered dinners and one continental breakfast are planned an included in the rally fee. As is typical for our rallies, there will be three days for technical seminars, ladies craft sessions, lifestyle presentations, and an owner roundtable. Rally hosts are Jim & Janet Staehr and Brett & Dianne Wolfe. They report that only a five additional spaces remain open with a total number of sites available at 35. Currently there are 30 coaches registered. Since our management system can handle it, a waiting list can be started should the need arise. And, as with previous rallies, we’ll be gathering prior to the FMCA convention planned for the Phoenix area at Rawhide Town and Event Center in Chandler, AZ. When I was young was in North-ern Scottsdale.

I’m from Arizona (born and raised, which is rare in my age group). I can honestly say that the Sedona and Verde Valley region provides an excellent place for the winter. It encompasses a lot of area – Camp Verde, being the low spot, with Cottonwood, Prescott, and Sedona being farther into the hills. There’s a lot to do, too. I always rec-ommend going to Montezuma’s Castle – the ancient cliff dwellings Native Americans lived some 700+ years ago. I’m always amazed when I visit there and wonder why they left? Then there is the mining town of Jerome – a good day trip to have lunch on the steep hillside. In it’s mining heyday it had the best hospital in the territory. Then there is Sedona and it’s famous Oak Creek. Sharon spent many weekends there when she was in high school and I spent some time there when I was in college (at NAU in Flagstaff). Or, you could go do a day trip into Prescott and attend visit of the stores in the square or along Whiskey row – where my father rode a horse into the palace bar when I was a youngster – I believe he had a few too many adult beverages.

This would be a good time to check your calendars and plan to attend our summer rally to be held at Pla-Mor Campground at Bremen, IN. Yes, that is in some of the Amish country and nearby Elkhart, the RV capital of the world. Rally dates are July 2-7, 2017. Rally details will soon be posted on the DRVC website. I’m hoping to see everyone at this summer rally.

The Nominating Committee reports they are still seek-ing applications for the office of Chapter President. They also report that Janet Staehr has expressed willingness to serve as VP Rally Coordinator. She has been appointed to serve in that office as Acting VP Rally Coordinator pending the election.

It is not to soon to help us in searching for candidates to fill offices that will be elected for 2017. Especially help in seeking a replacement for Byron Songer who has told me he’ll not be available for reelection as VP of Publications.

There is an article concerning RVillage which is now accessible via a smartphone app. I plan to use it once I get through the Samsung Galazy Note 7 issue.

Hoping to see you soon, – Rod

From time immemorial, the Verde River and other peren-nial water sources have attracted people to Sedona Verde Valley.

People have been calling Sedona Verde Valley home since at least 9,000 B.C. Evidence has been found of the ancient Clovis culture, as well as the later Archaic people. Later, came peoples, and the present-day Yavapai-Apache Nation communities in Camp Verde, Rimrock and Clarkdale. These people chose their homes in relation to the rivers, creeks, and springs in the area resulting in one of the highest concentrations of archeological sites in the United States. The Anasazi, a Navajo term meaning “the ancient ones,” fished the rushing Oak Creek waters, farmed the land and tracked the valley’s plentiful hunting grounds.

Today, hundreds of early culture sites include cliff dwell-ings, pueblos, petroglyphs, and pictographs from the ancient cultures. In addition, the cultural influence of the Yavapai-Apache Nation can be seen throughout the Sedona Verde Valley at local festivals and in the region’s arts and crafts that include traditional baskets, pottery and wooden flutes.

The area’s former copper mining history is another fasci-nating story for visitors to explore. In 1880, excavators discovered rich copper reserves on Cleopatra Hill, beneath the present-day Town of Jerome. This discovery drew miners and investors from across the world.

When the last mine closed in 1953, residents abandoned Jerome, which was a ghost town until the 1970s when it became a colony for artists and artisans, inspiring new

continued from page 1 businesses, shops, and restaurants. Today, visitors can even take a ghost-town tour of the old mining town to explore the abandoned mining sites and listen to folklore.

Founded in 1912, Clarkdale, originally a “company town”, was founded by the United Verde Copper Company to provide housing and services for the employees of their smelter.  Copper’s history comes alive in stories depicted in the array of museums and walking tours.

Today, approximately 75,000 people presently call Sedona Verde Valley home. This mix of longtime residents, retirees and young families supports the communities of Camp Verde, Clarkdale, Cottonwood, Jerome, Sedona, and Yavapai-Apache Nation. As a result, each community has its own unique character.

Chandler AreaChandler, located in Maricopa County, is a prominent suburb of the Phoenix, Arizona. It is where FMCA’s Inter-national Convention and RV Expo will be held March 7-10. The town was the dream of Dr. Alexander John Chandler who, in 1891, was the first veterinary surgeon for the ter-ritory of Arizona. He purchased 80 acres of land from the federal government south of Mesa. Dr. Chandler studied the relatively new science of irrigation engineering and was instrumental in building an early system of canals.

By the turn of the century, Dr. Chandler owned an 18,000 acre ranch. With the help of planners and architects, he subdivided the ranch and drew up a town site map. Dr. Chandler’s ambitious plan was a landscaped central park

surrounded by businesses. Walkways in front of the build-ings would be covered by a trellis-like roof, supported by colonnades. A national advertising campaign for the sale of Chandler Ranch sites brought trains filled with 300 speculators on the newly completed Arizona Eastern Rail-road with each spending $50,000 for land. One year after selling plots for the new town, businesses had been built along the west and south side of the park, including the Bank of Chandler and the Eastern Railroad depot.

The heart of Chandler remains its revitalized historic downtown, which includes the award-winning Chandler City Hall and a Center for the Arts. In 2010, Chandler was named as an All-America City, bestowed by the National Civic League.

In addition to Chandler, other suburbs of Phoenix include Gilbert, Glendale, Mesa, Scottsdale, and Tempe with each offering a variety of attractions for visitors to the area. Also providing a draw to the area is the fact that, at one time, Arizona was considered the heart of the Wild West. This fact translates to providing tourists an opportunity to experience a personalized Western adventure.

For those who enjoy horseback riding, Koli Equestrian Center, located in the heart of the Gila River Indian Res-ervation, offers miles of beautiful scenery and a variety of horseback riding trails to enjoy. Friendly, qualified wran-glers can tell you about the beautiful desert surroundings while riding their well-trained horses. The Koli Equestrian Center offers 60-90 minute rides depending on the time of year.

Rawhide Western Town and Event CenterRawhide Western Town and Event Center will be host-ing FMCA’s Rally in the Valley. On the grounds are the 1880s-style Steakhouse and Saloon which features authen-tic Western-style food including steaks, burgers and fries. (Reservations are suggested for cining at the Steakhouse). Visitors to the complex can hop on the 1880s-style Butter-

field stagecoach, ride burros, board a train, and watch the Rawhide Roughriders’ stunt show.

Other features of Rawhide Western Town include the fol-lowing:

• General Store• Honky Tonk and Bull Ride• Mission Patio and Cantina• Branding Iron and Town Grill• Pizza Tavern and Chuck Wagon Plaza• River Walk• Event Center and Sonoran Lawn• Rodeo Arena

Of course, the FMCA event will feature a motorhome and RV showcase, technical and lifestyle seminars, and nightly entertainment as it has in the past. The International Con-vention is March 7 to 10, 2017.

Southern Pacific Railroad Locomotive No. SP 2562 and Tender No. 8365 were built in 1900. It is on exhibit in the Arizona Railway Museum located at 330 E. Ryan Rd in Chandler. The locomotive was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works as a 2-8-0, steam locomotive. It and the attached tender are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

From the VP Rally Coordinator

2017 Rally InformationYour hosts and co-hosts are really excited about the DRVC spring rally at Distant Drums RV Resort at Camp Verde, Arizona. Response has been so positive that we’ve added an addition five spaces bringing the number of total sites to 35. The response to the Arizona is exciting and greatly appreciated.

The rally will be held in the Sedona Verde Valley area Feb-ruary 26 to March 3, 2017 at Distant Drums RV Resort. Awaiting attendees are five nights of camping, four hot breakfasts, three catered dinners plus one continental breakfast. There will be three days of technical seminars, ladies craft sessions, lifestyle presentations and an owner roundtable. If you’re a bowler or a want-to-be, there’s an afternoon of bowling scheduled at a nearby location. You also won’t want to miss the review of local history and local cultural entertainment to be presented early in the rally program.

Check in is after 1 PM on Sunday afternoon, February 26. Check out will be before 11 PM on Friday, March 3. There is a fee for checking in early or checking out late so make plans accordingly. If an extended stay is desired, please contact the campground directly at 928-554-8000 by telephone or [email protected] by email. Be sure to mention if you have registered for and will be attending the rally.

On your free day, there are oddles of things to choose from. You may have a hard time choosing one.

In regards to local things to do or see, consider putting one of the following on your list.

• Palatki Heritage Site. (West of Sedona and with about 10 miles of dirt road. Need to have a reser-vation as there isn’t a lot of parking. One of the couples that gives tours there were our wagon mas-ters on our trip to Alaska. They are awesome. Check it out on the internet and maybe include a picture of the ruins. There’s no charge and it’s definitely worth the drive. I will have brochures at the rally for this)

• Cottonwood has an oldtown main street with several tasting rooms and other local wineries.

• Jerome is an old time mining town and a great place to visit.

• Sedona is famous for its red rocks and has a lot to do and see including jeep tours.

• Clarkdale has a four hour railroad journey travel-ing to and from the Perkinsville Ghost Ranch. View archeology, geography, wildlife and Indian lore that is Verde Canyon.

The 2017 summer rally will be at Pla-More Campground near Bremen, Indiana. It is in Elkhart County, the RV center of the nation, and the heart of Amish Country as well. Dates are July 2-7, 2017. Brochures on the summer event should be available at the Arizona Rally or watch the DRVC web site.

Have You Connected?

RV Friends’ NetworkIf you haven’t heard FMCA has invested $250,000 in a program to help increase membership by participating in the social media phenomina we’ve all witnessed the last few years. Before it totally passes by FMCA and the popu-lation of motorhome owners, the decision was made to become of sponsor of RVillage, a site dedicated to provid-ing a common, online meeting place for RVers of all type. The site’s URL is RVillage.com. While anyone may become a member of the internet-based community, it is aimed at RVers and those who make their living in the RV lifestyle.

While RVillage is a bit late to the game that includes groups on Face-Book as well as a myriad of RV blog-gers, please consider that RVillage is designed, from the ground up, to appeal to RVers whether occasional campers or full-timers. To assist in becoming acquainted with the site, a video may be accessed at http://rvfriendnetwork.com. The informative video provides some background information as well as the rationale for the online community.

Membership in RVillage is free. Be aware, however, that they currently are offering membership in a Gold level which promises to support an enhanced experiencd. The only thing required to get started is a valid email address and a good password.

Currently on RVillage users will find a group for FMCA-Diesel RV Club as well as many other interest groups such including motorhome manufacturers and others. A list of some of the more popular or larger groups is provided below.

• American Military• Bloggers• Boondockers• Escapees RV Club• Family Motor Coach Association• Fulltime RVers• Geeks On Tour• Good Sam Family• KOA Fans• National Park Fans• NuRVers• Passport-America• RV-Dreams Community

• Technomadia Tales• Thousand Trails• Xscapers (geared for younger RVers)

An image of the web site’s page showing the top level menu is embedded with this article. Please refer to it to get an overall view of what is available. You’ll also note that on the right side of the menu are three icons that rep-resent the user’s email list (the number includes the total number of unread messages), the user’s profile, and new

messages of interest (represented by the bell).

An interesting feature of RVillage is the option to “check in” when arriving at an RV campground or a general area. After checking in, you’ll be able to view if any others are in the park who are also Villagers and receive alerts (via email) if other members arrive. This feature allows people sharing common interests to meet and get acquainted.

There is no secret that the decision to invest so much money was a hotly debated topic of the recent meeting of the Governing Board this past summer. However, FMCA’s declining membership is a real and serious problem for the long-term survival of FMCA and eventually all of the various chapters including DRVC. The action taken by FMCA is a solid attempt to appeal to the growing number of motorhome owners. Right or wrong, the Governing Board is trying to do something. If our membership numbers are heading in the wrong direction and we take no other steps to attract new member, then we are not managing but, instead, are just caretaking a declin-ing organization.

Let’s get behind our leadership and check out RVillage. Who knows, it may turn out to be useful and even fun.

Some Diesel RV Maintenance TipsCamping in Remote Areas

When camping in remote areas, check the engine compart-ment for small animals that may have taken refuge for the night before starting your engine. they like the warmth of the engine compartment but will make a real mess if you start the engine while they are nestled in the fan shroud.

RV Storage

Create a handy checklist to make sure your motorhome is ready to be put into and removed from storage. For some this will include winterizing actions and things to check when removing from storage.

Radiator and Charge Air Cooler Maintenance

On chassis equipped with a rear radiator, it is very impor-tant that the radiator and charge air cooler be inspected at regular intervals. A good recommendation is to inspect the charge air cooler every 7,500 miles because air and dust blown through the radiator and charge air cooler can build up and reduce the airflow through the cooling system. This is considered part of normal maintenance.

From the engine side of the radiator, use a flashlight to look into the fan shroud at the face of the charge air cooler. If there is any dirt buildup, this should be cleaned using a water hose and a mild solvent. If this is not done, the system can become clogged and can result in engine overheating.

Tire Dressing

Most manufactures warn against dressing RV tires as it will strip the tires’ rubber of their UV protection.

Replace Air Dryer Filters

Air dryer filters should be replaced every three years. You may have to request this work. Chassis prior to 2003 have an 18 month interval. Questions? Call 800-FTL-HELP

Ride Height Adjustment

The ride height is the setting for the air suspension on the chassis. If the ride heights are not set properly, two impor-tant factors are affected:

1.) The front ride height will change the front-axle caster settings. This can affect the handling of the coach on the highway and impact tire wear.

2.) The rear ride height will change the drive-shaft angles. Incorrect drive-shaft angles can cause driveline noise (vibration or a growling sound) and can cause premature wear of the u-joints on the driveline.

Air Brake System Draining

Air reservoirs serve as storage tanks for compressed air. They collect water condensed from the air, and small amounts of oil normally enter the reservoir in the form of vapor, because of the heat generated during the compres-sion. If they are equipped with automatic drain valves, they should still be drained manually every six months during operation. To drain the tanks, pull the three drain lanyards provided until all moisture is expelled.

Maintenance Checklists

Print a routine maintenance checklist and take it to service appointments to have the dealer verify services performed.
