Lotus isa regular contributor to National Geographic Traveler , among other publications.

As I write this note, live images on television cut romone to the next, depicting utter devastation in the wake o the 8.9-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that have justrocked Japan. Whole towns have been fattened; homes, schools, and businesses reduced to rubble. A severelycrippled nuclear power plant has become a ticking time

bomb. And although the earthquake was reportedly theth-largest in recorded history, much o the incompre-hensible damage was inficted at the hands o the sea, whose unstoppable crush o waves destroyed everythingin its path. For a group o people like ourselves who sharea love or—even shape our lives around—the sea, it’s atough reality to digest: that this most majestic and mysti-cal o earth’s elements could also be one its most dangerous and destructive.

While we band together to support victims in Japan, many o us are let con-

templating our own lives as they relate to the oceans, bays, and harbors we holddear. Perhaps today we regard the rolling waves and crashing sur with a bit morereverence and respect. But despite their ury and ragility, one thing’s or certain:the world’s oceans continue to draw us in.

It’s or that reason that we present our annual issue dedicated to the top 5coastal homes or sale here in the U.S. (see page 5). I you already own a coastalhome and are looking to switch locales (or add another property to your portolio),or i you’re a rst-time buyer, read on or a look at the 5 properties that blew our

minds most. And o course, keep reading or great ideas on everything rom traveland entertaining to outtting your home with some o the most un and cutting-edge amenities that are currently out there. They make the perect complement toyour home’s ultimate accessory: the sea. —Lindsay Lambert, Editor

The Cayman Islands are a dream destination for second-home buyers. Here, backyards are re-

placed by beaches and temperatures usually don’t dip below tepid. If you’re looking to acquire an

address in this island paradise, consider Castillo Caribe on Grand Cayman. At 48,000 square feet,

the hulking beachfront estate—“palace” might be a more appropriate word—offers an unending

complement of amenities, including 250 feet of beachfront, a 5,000-square-foot great room with

50-foot ceilings, a 400-bottle wine cellar, a spa, a Cuban-style courtyard, a combination billiards

room and bar/lounge, his-and-her studies, a 4,000-square-foot basement play room, a tennis court,

workout room, and a mock grotto, all on four livable levels and 1.4 acres of land. In addition to its

over-the-top offerings, Castillo Caribe is bound to appeal to would-be buyers thanks to its location

in the Caymans, which enjoy offshore status. For owners, this means no local taxes whatsoever—

not property taxes nor income, capital gains, or inheritance tax. Here, you’re truly king of the castle.

ship shape: The refurbished 77-foot Chris Craft “roamer” is now bedecked in boldcolors and patterns, from its bedrooms to its living and dining rooms.

Without planning to, Judd and Billie Jo Herberger boughtShahrezade. They saw, ell in love, and bought the 77-oot ChrisCrat “roamer,” the largest o the legendary company’s boats.

Then they considered how to decorate the interior. Built in 1977,the graceul aluminum hull was as beautiully sound as ever, but their new second home needed an update belowdecks.

“I wanted this boat to be like Old Hollywood,” says BillieJo. “I grew up a Southern Caliornia surer girl, and we keepher at a dock in Marina del Rey. I love glamour, so I thoughto Beverly Hills, the Hotel Bel Air, and the stylish cocktailparties o the 1950s.”

Los Angeles interior designer Bonnie Sachs, ASID, madeit happen. But that, too, was unplanned. “Usually, my clients

come via reerrals,” Sachs recalls. “They had not even seenmy work.” Sachs’ portolio includes several yachts, but theHerbergers ound her in the phone book. Once past herinitial hesitation, Sachs launched into a project she now de-scribes as “the most un I’ve ever had.”

Sachs created décor that speaks o Hollywood’s glamor-ous heyday, o Asian renement, o the exotic sensualityevoked by the boat’s name, and o the Caliornia surer girlwho calls it home. Lush with color, decorated with superb art,

and sotened into utter comort, theShahrezade

is a rare eat:a seaworthy yacht that dees stereotypes and proves thatvessels can be luxurious and homey; there isn’t a compass, whale, piece o rope or blue-and-white canvas anywhere.

When they began, Billie Jo showed Sachs a piece o bark-cloth with a dramatic, retro bird-o-paradise pattern. Thatbecame the design scheme’s jumping-of point, repeated ina diferent colorway on the dining room chairs and echoedin saturated reds and golds throughout. One stateroomreerences the boat’s name with a Moorish antasy; another

invokes a beach cabana. The main salon’s bamboo armchairsand barkcloth-upholstered soa cluster around the babygrand piano, perhaps the only such instrument suited to amarine environment. “It’s a Yamaha Clavinova, with a closedback and top,” Billie Jo explains. “It unctions as a digitalplayer piano when no one’s playing.”

The Herbergers spend a lot o time aboard, and theyentertain a great deal. “I hire a piano player and serve horsd’oeuvres,” says the hostess. “Friends bring their guitars; we

have wonderul times. This boat is so inviting and comort-able,” she continues, “I think we’ve had more people aboardthan most boats ever see.”

Since the 17th century, vesselsincluding merchant ships, modernmotoryachts, and sportshing boatshave visited the Los Cabos region o Mexico. At the tip o Baja Caliornia, its

deep, blue waters ofer a wide varietyo sh, and it is renowned as the marlinmecca o the world. However, it wasn’tuntil the 1950s that hotels and secondhomes were developed to attract vaca-tioners and avid travelers. Unlike otherareas o Mexico—indeed, many ocean-side regions in general—Los Cabos isanything but overdeveloped. Instead, picture stretches o uninhabited beach-es, with towering mountains providingspectacular views o sand and sea.

That’s what captivated Ron Hateld,a real estate developer, when he visitedthe region with his then-business part-ner, Ken Schnitzer, 15 years ago. “Theelevation o the land of the beach pro-

vided incredible sites or mountainsidehomes overlooking the Sea o Cortez,”Hateld recalls. They acquired land toofer a handul o homes, which sold soquickly that they purchased additionalacreage to create the community o Vil-las Del Mar. Five years later, Hateld, president o Del Mar Developments, purchased his own home site and nowlives there year-round.

Besides enjoying access to gol-ing and members-only clubs, Hateld

has one o the more distinctive homesin Villas Del Mar. “It’s built into themountainside or complete privacy andalso has a separate honeymoon suiteoverlooking the sea,” he explains. Mix-ing traditional urnishings with Span-ish-style ones lends what he considersa casual elegance, ideal or hosting din-ner parties or neighbors one day, thenwelcoming his grown children andgrandchildren the next. His avorite

room? The living room. “My glasspocket doors disappear into the walls,so it’s open all the way around withviews o the sea and the mountains.I get resh sea air while relaxing andwatching the game or reading a book.”

Another bonus: The region is virtu-ally ree o crime. “Los Cabos is de-nitely a sae place,” Hateld says. “I eelvery secure and have absolutely no ap-prehension at all about bringing amilyor riends here.” —Diane M. Byrne

Key West is one o America’s mostpopular destinations, but given thecruise ship trac and hordes o tour-ists here, those in search o high-endtravel experiences might think they’reew and ar between in The Conch Re-public and steer clear o it entirely. And

Poised on a rocky bluff above the At-lantic, The Chanler at Cli Walk conjuresthe elegance and graciousness o Newport’sGilded Age. Like its stately neighbors on

Mansion Row, the inn was built in the era asan extravagant summer retreat or the well-heeled—in this case, New York congressmanJohn Winthrop Chanler and his wie, Marga-ret Astor Ward. Cli Lawn, as it was knownthen, hosted a steady stream o bold-acednames, including President Theodore Roo-sevelt and poet Henry Wadsworth Longel-low, or some 50 years. The mansion saw

various incarnations throughout the nextcentury, rom a school or girls to a less-than-reputable hotel, beore it was snapped up in2000 by its current owners, who spent threeyears painstakingly restoring the building toits ormer glory.

Inside, the 19th century gives way tothe Renaissance, Colonial times, or oneo several distinct décor themes eaturedin each o the inn’s 20 rooms. The Gothic

suite, or instance, is right out o Camelotwith its vaulted ceilings, iron grating, and a

centerpiece Gothic-arched, wrought-iron bedcovered by a sheer canopy. The 21st centuryis well represented, too. One o three ocean-

view villas, “Martha’s Vineyard” is deckedout in blue damask abric. A hand-paintedtrompe l’oeil mural in the bathroom depictsan ocean scene, and an outdoor “crow’s nest”seating area overlooks Easton’s Beach, mak-ing it a perect perch or evening cocktails.

Newport’s restaurant scene is humming, and a car is always on call or jaunts intotown, but reserve at least one night to dinein-house at the Spiced Pear. With its cozy

freplace, open kitchen, and sweeping oceanviews, The Chanler’s main dining room eelsmore like the home o tasteul and well-to-do riends than a hotel restaurant. Sipa signature spiced pear martini while yousample wild burgundy escargot or big-eyetuna poke. The sea eatures prominently onthe entrée menu as well—think Block Islandgolden tilefsh and butter-poached Maine

lobster—but Che Thomas Duy is also wellversed in terrestrial are, like his Muscovyduck with caramelized Vidalia onions, sweetgem potatoes, and beech mushrooms in ablood-orange jus. The hotel’s more casualspots, the Veranda and the outdoor Terrace, are open in warmer months and serve lessormal are. Don’t leave without trying a lob-ster BLT and the Kobe burger, so good thatGQ magazine hailed it as one thing readers

must “try beore you die.” thechanler.com.—Margaret Loftus

With modern jetsetters looking be-yond commercial cruises and tradition-al resorts or their next upscale vaca-

Proessionalyacht charter brokers, like Ulla Gotred-sen o Amazing Charters (amazing-charters.com ), unction as maritimematchmakers, pairing clients withbeautiul boats, seasoned crews, andtailored agendas that suit their specicneeds. Chartering a crewed yacht is

like “creating your own oating luxuryboutique hotel,” says Gotredsen. Thedestinations, cuisine, drinks, hospitality, and activities are all at clients’ discre-tion. Plus, the amenities, which includeat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, and iPod dock-ing stations, are identical to those inhigh-end hotels. Gotredsen navigatesus through some key tips or a oatingvacation with endless opportunities.

Best o all, the prices they provideare identical to those o direct bookings

(which begin at $300/person/day).G ll-iluiv. Clients can choosebetween bareboat and luxury-crewedyacht charters. Like the name implies, bareboat charters provide the insuredboat only and are or experiencedsailors. Luxury-crewed charters, on theother hand, are an all-inclusive pack-age o boat, crew, unlimited ood anddrink, and unabashed pampering.

phenomena in a single visit. Ater all, where else can one oatin the Dead Sea, the lowest point on the planet, then drive a ewshort hours to the Golan Heights to catch a alling snowakeon top o a mountain? Approximately the size o New Jersey,Israel manages to squeeze so many diverse regions into such asmall place yet still eel larger than lie. Even more perplexingis how a land so ancient can eel brand-spanking new.

While these questions prompt much pondering under treesbrimming with lemons and oranges, one has little time or res-pite, as there is just simply too much to see and do in a land ripewith history, holiness, healing, and, yes, hipness. We traveledto Tel Aviv, Eastern Galilee, Jerusalem, and the Dead Sea,exploring the region’s hottest hotels and most indulgent spas.

Tel Aviv

Upon arrival in Tel Aviv, one eels a surprising yet alluringMiami-meets-San Francisco vibe. In this world-class city, theDan Tel Aviv ( danhotels.com/Tel_Aviv ) is perectly situatedon the seaport but is close to caes, restaurants, shopping, and a nightlie scene that pulses until the sun rises. The styl-ish hotel eatures 280 rooms, 84 Executive Sea View rooms,41 luxury suites, one Presidential suite, and one Royal suite.Along with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the hotelalso boasts a newly renovated spa, sports activities, and a

tness center. Fun act: The hotel is the site o the originalKaete Dan Hotel purchased by the Federmann brothers morethan 50 years ago and was the rst luxury hotel built in Israel.

Perhaps it is the close proximity to the Mediterranean Seaor its stylish sophistication retained through major renova-tions, but the Dan Tel Aviv is a magnet or megastars likeMadonna and Paul McCartney. Leonardo DiCaprio and hissometimes girlriend, Israeli supermodel Bar Reaeli, arelikely be ound canoodling here as well.

Note that breakast is a big deal in Israel. The Dan Ho-

tel’s sumptuous spread is the ideal spot to uel up or a dayo walking through Old Jafa, the Camel Market, SheinkinStreet, and Rothschild Boulevard. And here’s a hint or pro-spective visitors: The new Brown Hotel, with 30 stylish roomsand suites smack in the middle o the city’s urban scene, isone to watch.

Eastern Galilee

Hotel Spa Mizpe Hayamim ( mizpe-hayamim.com ) is truly

a magical destination. While some people will marvel at thebreathtaking views o the Hermon Mountains, The Golan

gourmet cuisine at Muscat,or ooh and ahh over the ol-ive branch massage, otherswill all madly in love withthe organic arm’s naturalbeauty. Here, you can seea lone red rooster struttingin a barn ull o sheep or betreated to arm-resh yogurt

topped with ripe blueber-ries. Perhaps you will be or-tunate enough to stand in aeld o herbs and watch thesun dance on dewy grass.

The ambience at HotelSpa Mizpe Hayamim iseclectic and inviting. Thehotel’s 99 rooms and suites

are housed in the main building and our stone buildings on

the sprawling grounds. There is also a spa, a tness room, indoor and outdoor Jacuzzis, and a swimming pool. Specialeatures include a tea and cofee corner, a bakery, a soap- andcandle-making area, a crat gallery, and a library. Guests canalso enjoy the organic arm that eatures vegetable and herbgardens, orchards, and a arm shop.

Whether enjoying a cup o lavender tea in a cozy corner, meandering through 37 acres o ruit groves and walkingpaths, relaxing in the wildly comortable spacious suites,

or learning about the vision o ounder Dr. Yaros, one iscertain to eel completely uplited ater a visit to Hotel SpaMizpe Hayamim.

Dead Sea

It is a well-known act that the Dead Sea is evaporating, butupon arrival at the lowest point on the planet, one can seewhy it is being considered or selection as one o the newSeven Wonders o the World. Sea, sun, salt, mud, and aircombine to create a calming environment or healing and

renewal. While visiting the Dead Sea, be sure to climb or takea cable car to Masada, visit the Ein Gedi Natural Reserve, andcheck out the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls lay undiscov-ered or 2,000 years.

The Isrotel Dead Sea Resort and Spa ( isrotel.com/is-rotel_dead_sea/  ) is a great choice or a stay at the Dead Sea.Each o the hotel’s more than 300 rooms and suites boastviews o the Dead Sea and desert mountains. The main at-traction o the hotel, however, is its health club and spa. More

than 20 treatment rooms welcome guests to enjoy specialaromatherapy and Dead Sea mud treatments.

But it’s not just the views that entice us to live at theocean’s edge. There is a special spirit here. The light is dier-ent, the moods dramatic, the sounds intoxicating, and beingthis close to nature--well, it just speaks or itsel.

“There’s something very human in the connection withthe sea,” says Suzanne M. King, director o Galerie d’Orsay inBoston. “There’s a great sense o proundity and tranquility; youare at peace. But you also realize how small you are and howgrand lie can be. She adds, “As a person who lives by the oceanand grew up there, I understand what it means to people—theeeling and expression the ocean brings into our lives.”

The work o artist Giner Bueno eatured at Jones’s gal-lery is an excellent example o an artist whose work not onlycaptures a sea theme, but also brings it down to a very per-sonal level. It portrays the liestyle o an era—the shing, thesocializing, the children playing, says Jones. O course, thereare many ways to build around this theme. The coastlinesand islands o the world could become a collection, as couldthe moods o the ocean, sunsets, moonlit waters, and sailing

vessels. “The list goes on,” Jones says. Also, there’s no needto stick to a single era, artist, or medium. “Good art goes withgood art,” Jones says. “You can hang abstract, contemporary, and Impressionistic [pieces] next to each other.”

William Craig o Haley and Steele, Boston says when heis called upon or an art consultation, one o the rst thingshe helps owners to determine is the mood they are trying toachieve. “How do you want it to eel? Do you want calm seas,a dory just sitting idly in the water? Or do you like the chal-lenge o the ocean, the conrontation with the sea—sailingships crashing through the waters?”

ings) into the theme, and there are some classics,” Craig says.“Painter John Stobart is known or his scenes o New YorkHarbor at night; his lighting is beautiul and you can keeplooking at those because o the level o detail.”

Once the room’s mood is established, Craig looks nextto choosing artwork or the largest wall in the room. “Thatgives us the anchor and all other art in the room plays o o that. We wouldn’t, or example, have a calm scene in the sameroom as a battle at sea.”

One idea shared by gallery owners and directors on bothcoasts is that there are really no rules when it comes to buy-ing art. “ …It should start rom buying work you love andhaving a collection with a theme will hold a bit more cache,”says King. “But don’t be araid to have an overall eclectic mixi that is what makes your heart sing.” For a collection, she be-lieves, “It’s not just about turning a corner and seeing a beau-tiul sailboat with a red buoy,” she adds. “It’s about nding

a variety o mediums and compositions that express or tieinto a harmonious theme.” The oceanside in North Carolinais quite dierent than that in Carmel, Caliornia. You might,King notes, like the diversity o dierent geographic areas tocome into your home, or you might preer to ocus on yourown geographic area.

Working with a gallery proessional can help you ndwhat is right or you and can inspire you to introduce avariety o mediums, all to make the mix and views in yourhome that much more interesting and pleasing. Addinga beautiul abstract sculpture or two to the collection cancomplement the hung art; “…something with movement thatsuggests the wind or the sea could be a wonderul addition toa collection,” King says. She points to the work o sculptorsML Snowden and Richard Erdman, whose abstract works inbronze and stone oten suggest the orces o nature.

King reminds collectors that integrating a variety o me-diums, imagery, and periods expands a collection’s interest. With a diverse collection that, or example, includes a playul

Calder print depicting brightly colored shapes, an abstractseascape by Luc Leestemaker, and a rare, turn-o- the-centuryposter o an oceanliner heading to New York, you will notonly have un in the collecting, but make your home moreinteresting, she adds.

I you nd yoursel migrating to sea-themed art or your oceanront home,

you’re not alone. People who have apassion or the views and topographyoutside their homes requently end upweaving a sea theme into their décorvia art and sculpture. Ater all, whennight comes, so go those views you love, notes Barbara Jones o the Jones & Ter-williger Gallery in Carmel, Caliornia.

Wihin the San Facisco Bay sits a peerlessisland with a phonetic name that, in Italian, means exactly whatit delivers, “beautiful view.” Incorporated in 1896, Belvedere

Island was initially populated by auent residents who built poshhomes as retreats from the bustling commerce of downtown San

Francisco. Today, it still provides sanctuary for the lucky few whocan say they live in one of the wealthiest and most picturesquetowns in California.

Situated on the western-most promontory of Belvedere Island, with the Bay directly below, and boasting unobstructed views of

the Golden Gate Bridge, the entire San Francisco skyline, and the western coastline of Belvedere Island, this singular property fully illustrates the lifestyle of Belvedere Island and its vaunted views.

The home was designed by famed San Francisco architect, Warren Callister, but does not necessarily bear his signature style.

Known for boldly modern custom homes with wooden beams

and panels rhythmically and expressively arrayed inside andout, Callister occasionally dabbled outside his realm but did so with utter ease, eortlessly blending homes into their dramatic

landscapes. Such is the case with this home and its abundance of unforgettable views. With genteel opulence and vignettes of views

in every window, the design of this masterpiece with its seamlessintegration into the landscape, was meticulously engineered toexploit the generous views.

The main residence features ve bedrooms, four full and threehalf-baths and comes complete with a one-bedroom, one bath

guest apartment with kitchen and living room. Five replacesadorn the interior and complement a large formal living anddining room with French door access to view-side terraces and

level lawns, an intimate library and an oce with elaborate built-ins. In addition, there is a magnicent three-car enclosed garage

with additional parking for seven cars.

The top oor features the large master suite with his and herclosets and dressing areas and a private view-side terrace. Thislevel oers not only an additional four bedrooms, two of which

are en-suite and two that come with a “jack and jill” bath in between them, but also oering spectacular views of San

Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge one one side, and views of Mount Tamalpais on the other.

A fabulous signature kitchen and adjacent family area with

granite-topped island, walk-in pantry and a large space forinformal dining ensure gourmet cooking with world-class views.

Meander to the adjacent sunny level lawn with bursting blossomsand natural serenity, all embracing the San Francisco skyline andGolden Gate Bridge on the horizon.

An ornate family room with TV, wet bar, refrigerator, replace,half-bath, and view-side terrace, take relaxation to another level.

A courtyard with intimate privacy and lush gardens drape the

exterior. Surrounded on three sides by the San Francisco Bay,Belvedere Island’s location is arguably one of the rarest addressesin America, if not the world, and this extraordinary estate truly

exemplies the island’s grandeur. Be the rst to experience thisBelle of Belvedere.
