Coralreefsarevibrantecosystemsteemingwithcolorandlife.Mostgrowinthewarmsunlitwatersoftropicalseas.Beau1fulandaccessible,shallowwatercoralsarebelovedbythepublicandwellknowntoscien1sts.Incontrast,deep-seacoralsaregenerallyunknownandunappreciated.Livingintheicydarknessoftheabyss,thesecreaturesaredifficultandexpensivetostudy.Formostofthe20thcentury,deep-seacoralscouldonlybestudied
whenfishermenaccidentallypulledabrokenspecimentothesurface.Inthelastfewyears,scien1stshaveusedsophis1catedsubmersibleandunderwatersensingtechnologiestopenetratethecorals'remoterealm.
Currently,scien1stsontheNOAAshipOkeanosExplorerareinves1ga1ngbio-diversityinareasaroundAmericanSamoa,includingdeep-seacoralcommuni1es.TheDeepSeaCoralMul1mediaDiscoveryMissionisaninterac1vemul1mediapresenta1onsandlearningtoolthatincludesashortvideolesson,asecondvideoonglobalimpact,andonlineinterac1vestudentac1vi1es.
