There are so many amazing fall deals and specials as well as events going on this November! Please be sure
to contact our e-marketing manager [email protected] with all of your holiday specials, so she can include
them in our weekly e-blast. You may also log into your online account a click the “hot deals” tab to include
deals that will show up on the chamber website! Also, there is still time to display your business in the all new
“Holiday Happenings Guide”, which will be distributed from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day at vari-
ous locations throughout town. This will also be where all of our Chamber Lights participants are listed.
As you may be aware, the legislature passed the Mandatory Paid Leave Bill this past session. This would es-
sentially require all businesses with 15 or more employees to provide paid leave to employees working 12 or
more hours per week. For seasonal businesses, accrual of leave commences upon hire, but may not be used
until after 106 days of employment, however many seasonal businesses have staff longer than this period,
which would allow them to earn and use leave at the end of the season which is often a very difficult time for
employers to stay fully staffed.
Due to the severe impact on small business in Maryland as well as the strict sanctions for non-compliance, the Governor did veto this
bill. However, there is a very strong chance that that veto may be overridden during the 2018 legislative session. We are working dili-
gently to sustain the veto- but we need your feedback on how this would personally impact your business!
During this session our expert panel will cover:
- The provisions of HB1
- The impact of HB1 on businesses
- What would businesses like to change?
- Prospects of a veto override
- What you can do to help sustain the Governor’s Veto and support a more reasonable bill
The event will be at the Dunes Manor on November 14th at 8:30 am, please just click to register http://chamber.oceancity.org/events/
details/house-bill-1-mandatory-paid-leave-the-impacts-and-implications-related-to-your-business-22063
For more information and to take action on the effort to sustain the veto, please visit http://www.savemdjobs.com
We will also be distributing the Chambers full legislative agenda at this meeting and our lobbyist Dennis Rasmussen will be on hand
for questions.
Finally, the Chamber, along with Ocean City Tourism representatives will also be headed to College Park for the annual Maryland
Tour and Travel Summit in early November. This three-day event attracts 250-300 tourism and hospitality industry leaders from
throughout the State of Maryland to learn the latest techniques in marketing, sales, public relations, social media, grassroots advoca-
cy, and to hear about the economic outlook for the industry.
Have a great November and Happy Thanksgiving!
Melanie Pursel Warmest Regards,
Executive Director

Ocean City Life Saving-Station Museum
Opens New Exhibit
The Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum is showcasing a
new exhibit entitled: Archives and Artifacts. Each month the ex-
hibit will display a different set of historic documents, photo-
graphs, and artifacts that reveal Ocean City’s rich history.
Due to lack of space, the Museum houses many of their artifacts
offsite in a storage facility. This exhibit will give the public a
chance to see some of the unique artifacts that otherwise would
be in storage. Ocean City’s first legal draft beer tap, a bourbon
jug from Prohibition era, and a 1920’s Coast Guard era self-
igniting flare are just a few of the unique items this exhibit will
showcase.
A few of the subjects for this display will include; the 1933 and
1962 storms, Prohibition, and the fire of 1925. The month of Oc-
tober is dedicated to Ocean City Beer.

on Drowning Prevention Jamie Falcon, a Sergeant with the Ocean City Beach Patrol, recently gave an oral presentation at the World Con-ference on Drowning Prevention in Vancouver, Canada. The event was hosted by the International Lifesaving Federation and is co-sponsored by the World Health Organization. In his acknowledgements, Falcon thanked Ocean City's De-partment of Public Works, Wastewater Management, City Engineer's Office, along with Captain Arbin of the Beach Patrol. "This is a problem at coastal resorts around the world,” commented Falcon. “I'm happy to have contributed an empirical study of this little understood problem." The conference took place October 17-19. Included in his presentation, Falcon gave the results of his Ph.D. disserta-tion which he defended last year. The research is titled Evaluating Near Shore Spinal Injuries and Alternatives to Reduce Their Occurrence.
