National Kick Butts Day Ocean City High School Students in the REBEL and SADD Clubs along with advisors Katie Kline and Debbie Cathcart joined Renee Bendig’s Health Classes in Ocean City Intermediate School for National Kick Butts Day on March 18, 2015. Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism that empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against tobacco. More than 1,000 events will be held in schools and communities across the United States and even around the world. On Kick Butts Day, teachers, youth leaders and health advocates organize events to:

Raise awareness of the problem of tobacco use in their state or community; Encourage youth to reject the tobacco industry's deceptive marketing and stay tobacco-

free; and Urge elected officials to take action to protect kids from tobacco.

Kick Butts Day is organized by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. The first Kick Butts Day was held in 1996.

CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES AND VISITORS Ocean City High School Family and Consumer Sciences Classes Host a Pie Tasting Competition on Pi Day Miss Pohlidal and Mrs. Cook’s Family and Consumer Sciences cooking classes made pies to enter into the Family and Consumer Sciences pi(e) tasting competition. Each lab group made either a blueberry pie, apple pie or peanut butter pie. There were two winners from each pie category including best tasting and best presentation. The winners of the categories received a Wawa gift card generously donated by the Ocean City Education Foundation. The students worked very hard on their pies by making a homemade crust and adding their personal decorative touches. The students’ pies turned out beautifully, making it very difficult to pick a winner.

Best Presentation for Peanut Butter Pie John Deyoung, Brandon Hadtke, Brianna DiMaren, Rob Rivera

Best Tasting Apple Pie - Teresa Citera, Sam DelSordo, Andrea Sharp

Student Council At the end of January, the student council board took a trip to Washington D.C for the national LEAD conference. We stayed Friday, Saturday and Sunday going to workshops, meeting new people, and exploring DC! Each member loved the trip and gained new and exciting experiences to take back to our own Student Council. In the month of February, Student Council’s big event was carnation sales. We sold carnations every day for about two weeks. On Friday, February 13th, a select few student council members distributed the flowers to first period teachers. We sold over 500 carnations this year! The board also had a meeting with our American Red Cross correspondent, Chris Scartelli. As a board, we planned our annual blood drive to be Friday, March 6th, with a goal of 170 donors. Student council also had a Blood Drive assembly on February 24th where the juniors and seniors could sign up to donate. We had around 200 students sign up. This is one of Student Council’s biggest events and we are excited to host. Unfortunately, due to snow days, this event was postponed till April.

On March 24, 2015, Mrs. Georges’ Advanced Anatomy & Physiology students were treated to an interactive presentation by Dr. Bradford Tucker and Nurse Melissa Romeo. Students learned about orthopedic surgery as a career, the anatomy of a shoulder and then were able to perform laparoscopic surgery on a model to repair a full rotator cuff tear. It appears we may have some future surgeons in our midst!

On the first day of spring, March 20, Mrs. Georges’ Honors Biology classes were visited by two volunteers from the Margate Terrapin Rescue Project. Kimberly Lull and William Doughty explained the anatomy and physiology of our local terrapins as well as their roles in our ecosystem. Terrapins of different ages were provided for hands-on investigation. Lastly, students were shown how causeways connecting the mainland to our barrier islands are a threat to this species and what they can do to help. Students designed comprehensive plans to protect terrapins along the Margate causeway using real barriers, weighing pros and cons of each material.

Geometry Students in Use Trigonometry to Measure

Ocean City Landmarks Geometry students in Mr. Lehman’s class braved cold and wind during March to determine the heights and distances between landmarks on Ocean City’s skyline without actually measuring a single distance. Using homemade sextants, students were able measure angles by simply pointing to the tops of objects along the skyline. “If we can measure the angle of elevation, we can use trigonometry if we know another measure. We needed another measure, and that’s where Google Maps came in”, one student explained. Students took measurements from several locations easily identified on Google Maps (West Goal Post, The Sundial at the Observatory, and Carey Stadium’s scoreboard). They then measured the angles of elevation to the stadium lights, Garden’s Plaza, and the Wonderland Ferris wheel. Next they pinpointed the locations and captured the distances between sites using Google Maps. Finally, once the calculations were made, it was

time to confirm the accuracy of the devices and methods. Students were very pleased to know that their calculated height of the Ferris wheel was within two feet of the documented 144 foot height … and that measurement was made from about 700 feet away!
