Print vocab cards on cardstock and laminate. Cut apart. Have students tell you what they know about each animal. (great KWL opportunity).

Book Directions: print 1 to 2 sided and cut in half. Fold.

Crab Fact Book

Crabs live in the ocean and on

land.

Crabs tend to walk to one side.

Robber crabs are able to climb

trees.

Crabs eat algae. Male crabs have larger claws than

the females.

Horseshoe crabs date back to 200 million years ago.

Crabs have a short tail, exoskeleton

(shell) and a pair of claws.

Fish Fact Book Fish are vertebrate animals (a spine

covered by cartilage).

Fish have gills that extract oxygen

from around them.

Some flatfish use camouflage to hide themselves on the

ocean floor.

Fish are covered in scales.

Fish have been on earth for more than

500 million years!

Fish are cold blooded (body temperature changes to

surroundings).

A person who studies fish is called

an ichthyologist.

Lobster Fact Book

Lobster aren’t red. They are green,

yellow or blue. They turn red when

cooked.

Lobsters shed their shells or molt.

Lobsters can swim forward and backward.

Lobsters usually feed on clams,

snails, and crabs.

Lobsters can grow to 4 feet long and

40 pounds.

Lobsters can live as long as 100 years

old.

Lobsters have a crusher claw and a

pincer claw.

Octopus Fact Book

Octopus have 8 long legs

(tentacles).

An octopus can re-grow a tentacle if it

loses one.

Two rows of suckers line their

tentacles for taste.

An octopus is a mollusk (soft-

bodies invertebrate with a shell).

An octopus has a beak to open up their food (crabs

and clams).

Octopus can camouflage to their

surroundings.

Octopus can release ink if

scared.

Shark Fact Book

Sharks have been around for about 400 million years.

Sharks range in size from 6 inches

to 45 feet.

Sharks have the most powerful jaws

on the planet.

A shark can grow and use 20,000

teeth in its lifetime.

If a shark loses a tooth, another spins

forward from the rows of backup

teeth.

Sharks skin is made of denticles instead

of scales.

Sharks eat about 10 people a year, but people kills thousands of sharks a year.

Clam Fact Book

A clam is a mollusk that lives on the sand or in the

water.

A clam has no head, mouth, legs, or

arms.

Clams are made up of two shells and a

soft inner body.

The clam shells are connected by an

elastic hinge (like a ligament).

Clams eat plankton.

The gills of clams remove oxygen and food particles from

the water.

A clam cannot hear, taste, or smell.

Shrimp Fact Book

Shrimp are crustaceans found at the bottom of

the water.

Shrimp have an exoskeleton that is

colorless or transparent.

Shrimp live on riverbeds and ocean floors

around the world.

Shrimp are eaten by fish, crabs, starfish,

birds, whales, dolphins, and other sea animals.

Shrimp feed on algae, plant

particles, tiny fish, and plankton.

A female shrimp can lay up to a million eggs.

Shrimps stay in schools.

Starfish Fact Book

Starfish are echinoderms (spiny

skinned sea urchins).

Starfish cannot swim.

Starfish do not use gills to breathe.

Starfish’s spiky shell protects them from

birds and otters.

Some starfish have more than 5 arms (up to 40 arms)!

Starfish come in many colors and

patterns.

Starfish can regenerate arms.

Whale Fact Book

Whales are mammals (babies grown inside the

mother).

Whales breathe air and need to come

up to the surface to get air.

To breathe, whales have a blowhole at

the top of their head.

The blue whale is the largest animal in the

world.

Some whales can stay underwater for

90 minutes.

To rest, whales sleep only half their

brain so they remember to take

air in.

Some baleen whales sing.
