It’s officially summer here in south florida. the kids have finished their final days of school and the hot, humid weather is here again. It’s time to seriously think about summer activities and

vacations. We live in the perfect place to enjoy all that summer has to offer. It does not matter whether you take a short trip to the breathtaking Florida Keys or prefer the magic of Orlando, or simply spend the lazy days of summer relaxing with friends

and family at backyard barbecues and picnics at the beach. It’s not where you go, but rather what you do that is important. Summertime

fun is when many precious family memories are made. That big project at work or the never-ending chore list at home can wait. The little things you do with your children, your siblings and your friends are what really matter and create memories for a lifetime. Take the time this summer to enjoy life and each other.

I hope you are also enjoying reading our monthly magazines. Some of our readers may have noticed a new logo and a new name on the front cover. Don’t be confused. We are still the same team, the same owner/publisher, and the same great local community news magazine. With six magazines, covering all of West Broward, we wanted to be consistent with one common name – so welcome to Our City Media.

PS: Don’t forget to wish dad a Happy Father’s Day this month!

Sincerely,

Sven BudzischPublisher/Owner

South florida is well known for its “human” fashions, but this month the focus will be on the

animals. On June 8, from 9am to 4pm, the Town of Davie will host the 1st Annual Animal Fashion and Open Horse Show at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Proceeds from the show will benefit Friends of the Davie Farm Park and Project Stable.

Area residents are invited to bring their pets and equines for a dress up day of fashion and fun. If you can dress it up, there will be a way to compete. There will be competitions for dogs, cats, farm animals, horses, mini’s, donkeys, ponies and more.

There will be three classes for each pet: Most Fashionable, Best Matched Pair-Pet and Handler, and Most Unusual. In addition, there will also be a Best of Show winner. The cost to enter is $10 per class. Participants can enter in one class or all three.

The Open Horse Show will feature classes in: Halter, Showmanship, English and Western Riding, and 4-H, as well as Games and Timed Events. There will also be a special appearance by Darlene Evans of KISS Country 99.9 FM.

The schedule is as follows: ▸ Gates open - 9am ▸ Fashion (Costume) Show - 10am ▸ Open Horse Show - 12pm ▸ Games and Timed Events - 2:30pm

Melinda Walling plans to enter with her dog, Cody, in the Best Matched Pair-Pet and Handler category. The two typically dress alike on Halloween. “I am looking forward to showing off our costumes at the event,” said Walling. “It should be a lot of fun. Plus, it is for a great cause.”

Project Stable is an equestrian and farm program that works with special-needs children and provides agricultural education to the general public. The program uses horses and farm animals to help special need children overcome their abilities. It also provides volunteer opportunities for college and high school students to learn the importance of volunteering and the difference they can make in the life of a special-needs child.

Scheduled to open this year, the Governor Leroy Collins Farm Park is a working urban mini-farm where crops are grown and animals are raised. The project strives to increase the public’s understanding of the vital role agriculture plays in our everyday survival, while making learning fun and preserving open space. Children and adults will have the opportunity to learn in a hands-on environment about agricultural production, from seedling to market.

The Bergeron Rodeo Grounds are located at 4271 Davie Road in Davie. For information, send an email to [email protected], call 954-680-8069 or visit www.davie-fl.gov.

Many kids dream of climbing inside some of the big trucks they pass on the road. On June 14, they will have an opportunity to see, touch, and explore their favorite big trucks and vehicles, as well as to

meet some of the people who drive them at the 16th Annual City of Cooper City Touch-A-Truck event. Over 500 people are expected to attend the event, from 9am to noon, at the Cooper City Sports Complex, located on the corner of Stirling Rd. and Palm Avenue. All ages are invited and admission is free.

“We invite everyone to come out and get a birds-eye view of trucks and vehicles of all shapes and sizes,” said Annie Boyle, Recreation Program Specialist for the Cooper City Recreation Department. “This hands-on event is the perfect opportu-nity for children to get up close to and touch all kinds of vehicles they usually only see from afar.”

There will be more than 30 trucks and vehicles on display from a variety of governmental agencies and private collectors. The fire and police departments in Cooper City will bring out some of their trucks, cars and equipment. Waste Management will show kids how a dump truck crushes the trash. There will be cranes and other construction trucks, Recreation Department shuttle buses, utility pump trucks, SWAT trucks, motorcycles, and much more.

Peter O’Connell brought his three children, ages 3 to 7, to the event last year and plans to attend again. “They loved it last year and can’t wait to return,” said O’Connell. “It is so cute to see the little ones climb up on the big trucks and honk the horns. I enjoy the event just as much as my kids do. I cannot imagine a better way to spend Father’s Day weekend.”

Organizers are still looking for companies that want to display their vehicles.

Mayor Judy Paul recently welcomed a grouP of bahamian dignitaries, who traveled to Davie to learn more about the international Boys and Girls Club. They were interested in learning about programs

that they might be able to implement in the Bahamas. The group was led by the Honorable Cynthia “Mother” Pratt, co-chair of the

Urban Renewal Commission (former Deputy Prime Minister of the Bahamas). The Bahamian contingent also included: Senator Cheryl Bazard; Schemal King,

executive assistant to Mother Pratt; Daphne Bannister, representative of Woman Supporting Woman, Nassau; Superintendent Stephen Dean, Royal Bahamian Police Force; and Gregory Butler, Urban Renewal, Commonwealth of the Bahamas.

“Our Boys and Girls Clubs are wonderful facilities that provide a myriad of programs to our youth,’ said Mayor Paul. ‘We are honored that Mother Pratt and the others chose to visit the Town of Davie. I am always pleased to share our ideas about projects that enrich the lives of our young people.”

Mayor Paul presented Mother Pratt with a Key to the Town. Rick Case, Rita Case and Ron Cacciatore were also at the ceremony. Afterwards, the group trav-eled to the Rick and Rita Case Boys and Girls Club in Davie, where Brian Quail, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Broward County, welcomed them and led a discussion session about the club.

The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County is to enable all young people, especially those who are most in need, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. It provides world-class experiences that assure success is within reach of every child who walks through its doors. The Club’s goal is for all members to graduate from high school with a plan for the future; demonstrate good character and citizenship by participating in leadership training and volunteering in community service projects; and engage in sports and activities that promote a healthy lifestyle.

The Rick and Rita Case Club is host to over 700 members, ages 6-18. It is located at 7525 NW 33rd Street, in Davie.

For information on the Rick and Rita Case Club, call 954-433-9000 or visit www.bgcbc.org. For informa-tion on Davie events, visit davie-fl.gov.

Area residents will have an oPPortu-nity to show off their singing talents and par-ticipate in other fun activities at the 2nd Annual

Downtown Hoedown. The event, which is presented by the Town of Davie and the South Florida Cloggers, will be held on June 13, from 7pm to 11pm, at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds.

One of the highlights of the event is the “Davie Idol” singing contest, which kicks off an hour before the official start of the Hoedown. Participants, ages 16 and up, will sing a song to their own back track. Celebrity judges will select the top three contestants, who will then sing for the first place spot during the Hoedown. The deadline to sign up is June 6. The cost is $20. Winners will receive a cash prize, as well as gift cards and other donated items.

During the Hoedown, guests will also enjoy per-formances by the South Florida Cloggers, a Davie group that has become well known throughout the country. They have performed in the Macy’s Day Parade at Universal Studios and twice at Disney World; opened the show at Country Tonite in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee; received an invitation to audition for America’s Got Talent, and much more. The South Florida Cloggers meet at Robbins Lodge. It is a family atmosphere, with students that range in age from 2 to 72. During the season, from October to March, they perform several shows each weekend.

The Hoedown also includes line dancing, mechani-cal bull riding, carnival games, a silent auction, raffles, bounce houses, dinner and more. Every 30 minutes, a drawing will reveal the name of a South

Florida Clogger, who will be the target of a pie throw-ing contest.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children. This includes entrance to the Hoedown, as well as din-ner. The proceeds will be used to help the South Florida Cloggers pay for travel expenses for clogging competitions.

Mark Rosen attended the Hoedown last year with his family. “There was something for the whole family and we all had a great time,” said Rosen. “We espe-cially enjoyed the Davie Idol, clogging demonstrations and pie throwing contest.”

Dear Friend,

I want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstand-ing. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few

other things first.Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy in the back.Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hos-pital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more…A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily mi-graines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiroprac-tor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say:

“Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symp-tom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL

“Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!

Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term over-all health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor.

You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 6/30/14) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAY-MenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIS-cOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInA-TIOn, OR TReATMenT.

great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunder-standing about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Mylene and Johanna – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee.

Our office is called Windmill Health center and it’s at 17160 Royal palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill professional plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. call Mylene, Johanna or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you.

For more information regarding our services please visit our web-site www.WindmillHealthcenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at [email protected] – Rick Behar, D.C.

Much of broward county is surrounded by canals and waterways, which are home to fish, birds, alligators and other wildlife. In celebration of Earth Day, students were recently asked to take a close

look at their environment and capture the images on paper for the 8th Annual Everglades Eyes Children’s Art Competition. The winners were announced at an award’s ceremony at the Old Davie School Historical Museum.

The competition is a partnership between Central Broward Water Control District’s outreach program and Old Davie School Historical Museum. It was open to all 4th and 5th grade students who attend Broward County public and private schools and 119 individual artists showed their work in the exhibit. They were from Cooper City Elementary School, Davie Elementary School, Griffin Elementary School, Sheridan Hills Christian School, Silver Ridge Elementary School, and St. Mark Catholic School.

The students expressed themselves in oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, mixed media, photography, collage and other mediums. All of the artwork was original and included a wide variety of images from the Everglades. A distinguished group of local community leaders and art lovers judged the artwork.

The winners were: ▸ First Place: Genesis Severino of Griffin Elementary School won a blue

ribbon rosette, $50, art supplies, and a Family Membership to Young At Art Museum.

▸ Second Place: Camille Omega of Cooper City Elementary School won a red ribbon rosette, $35 and art supplies.

▸ Third Place: Ella McLaughlin of St. Mark Catholic School won a green rib-bon rosette, $25 and art supplies.

▸ Merit Award: Lara Ramiraz of St. Mark Catholic School won a green rib-bon rosette, $25 and art supplies.

▸ People’s Choice Award: Kyle Heywang of Griffin Elementary School won a ribbon and art supplies.

“We were genuinely surprised at the turnout this year,” said Constance Ruppender, CBWCD Special Projects & Outreach Coordinator. “It was a wonderful evening of art and friendship. The art is as wonderful as the young artists. It never gets old seeing the face of a young artist when his or her name is called out as a winner. The smiles are enormous. And, THAT so makes it worth doing!”

Dr Samira Alempour answered some commonly asked questions about her practice

What services does your practice offer? Our practice offers comprehen-sive dental care and focuses on preventa-

tive treatment modalities and oral health education to prevent the formation of dental caries (cavities) We offer the latest state of the art technology, including digital (lowest radiation) x-rays and the highest quality dental materials In addition to rou-tine dental exams, we offer sealants to help prevent tooth decay by up to 90%, restorative treatment of cavities, extractions, and counseling for early intervention of harmful childhood habits, such as thumb sucking

What is Dr. Samira Alempour’s background? Dr Samira Alempour moved to South Florida when she was 13 years old and has lived here ever since She speaks English, Spanish, and Farsi She is a published author and a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist Dr Alempour obtained her Dental Degree from Nova Southeastern University, where she continued on and earned her Degree in Pediatric Dentistry (specializing in the oral healthcare of infants, children, teens, and patients with special needs) She currently lives in Weston, with her husband, Robert, 15-month-old son, Riad, and their dog, Bailey the Boxer

What can patients expect when they visit the office? We treat each child as if they were our own Our staff has many years of experience working

with children and adoles-cents We build lasting and trusting relationships with our patients and their fami-lies The office has games, toys, televisions, and a toy tower of prizes in order to create a fun and inviting child-friendly atmosphere All of our patients are given prizes for their efforts and for being the wonderful patients that they are

Do you offer sedation dentistry? For children that have dental anxiety, we offer different types of sedation techniques to help them have a more pleasant dental visit These techniques include nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas), oral con-scious sedation, and IV sedation, which is adminis-tered by a pediatric anesthesiologist We employ the safest and most effective sedation standards by following the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry

Do you educate your patients? We believe that a team approach between the patient, parent, and dental staff is the key to a successful lasting smile! We take pride in educating patients and parents in the areas of cavity prevention, nutritional counseling, and oral hygiene

At what age should parents bring their children for the first time? One year of age is the ideal time to bring in your child for their first dental visit to establish a dental home, as is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Visits are compli-mentary for children under the age of two

Why is it important to bring children for early dental visits? Early dental visits cre-ate the concept of a dental home, where young patients can learn to trust their pediatric dentist and staff This helps to create familiar and com-fortable dental visits Also, early visits help detect cavities when they are small and more manage-able and therefore much easier to treat Another great benefit of early dental visits is to ensure that patients are brushing well and taking all the correct measures to prevent early childhood decay

At what age should children start brushing their teeth? The best time to start brushing is when the

first primary tooth erupts to ensure good oral health for all of the years to come We offer special infant tooth-brushes with unique handles to our patients for creating safe and healthy brushing habits from an early age

At what age should children start flossing? Flossing with parental supervision can begin as young as needed when the

space between a child’s teeth is tight and too small for a toothbrush to properly clean the area The benefits of flossing at a younger age help children to learn healthy habits early on and make flossing a part of their daily routine

At what age should children start getting fluo-ride? Fluoride use depends on the patient’s age and the patient’s risk for dental caries (cavities) The best way to determine if your child is ready for fluoride toothpaste under the age of two is by having a complete oral assessment by a pediatric dentist

Should parents limit juice and snacks? Juice and snacks rich in carbohy-drates can increase the risk for dental caries, and thus should be limited in fre-quency throughout the day The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recom-mends 4-6 ounces of juice per day and it is always best to dilute it with water and consume it at meal time

Is thumb sucking a prob-lem? Thumb sucking and pacifiers provide comfort and a sense of security for many babies Both are a common way to self sooth   If thumb sucking contin-ues beyond two to three years of age, it may cause malpositioning of the teeth and future discrepancies in the child’s bite Such habits

should be discussed with your pediatric dentist

At what age do most children start losing their teeth? Most children begin to lose their first tooth around the age of six, but every child is different and sometimes it is sooner or later than six years of age

Intravenous (IV) Therapy is a method of feeding vitamins, micronutrients, minerals and amino acids directly into

the bloodstream. Allowing 10 times the amount of nutrients to be absorbed in one treatment. IV Therapy provides 100% absorption into circulation versus 20-

30% absorption through the usual consumption.

Do you want to imProve your health or are you are suffering from the following: depression/anxi-ety; asthma; sinusitis; acute and chronic viral infection;

undergoing chemotherapy or radiation; chronic fatigue; before and after surgery; adrenal fatigue; complement hormonal therapy; detox your body; improve your nutritional status; or need to recover and heal faster after sports. If so, IV Vitamin Therapy may help to rejuvenate your body and help you to feel

better again.Intravenous (IV) therapy is a way to introduce nutrients and therapeutic agents

directly into the bloodstream. It can be used to correct deficiencies, enhance immune function, increase energy and assist in maintaining health. IV nutri-ents are given in therapeutic pharmacological doses greater than the minimal requirements of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), which are intended just to avoid deficiency states. Because natural nutrients are easy on the body and welcomed, IV administration has an exceedingly high safety profile. Giving IV nutritional therapies will put nutrients back into the body, and improve the abil-ity of cells to detoxify, repair and regenerate.

What are the ben-efits of Intravenous Nutritional Therapy?

IV nutritional therapy can provide enormous health benefits depending on the condition(s) being treated. In many respects, IV nutritional therapy is a pre-ventive aging measure since it improves the nutritional content inside of the cells.

Some of the specific benefits that patients may experience include: increased energy; an overall sense of well-being; improved sports perfor-mance, improved healing & recovery from sports “wear and tear” or even surgical procedures; enhanced immune support; and stress relief. IV therapy is so powerful that many patients report many of these benefits within hours of receiving the treatment. Some conditions, including chronic diseases like Fibromyalgia, require periodic treatments in order to maintain the benefits.

Intravenous nutritional therapy is a method of delivering vitamins, minerals, and other vital nutrients to the body directly to the blood stream. This will allow 100 % absorption of the nutrients instead of 20% if taken by mouth. For some people, barriers exist in the gastrointestinal tract that prevent adequate absorp-tion. But with IV therapy, we can safely deliver large doses of nutrients safely into a vein that would otherwise not be tolerated if administered orally.

Would I be a candidate if I have a good diet and exercise daily?

Yes. Even if you eat well, your body might not be absorbing the vitamins and minerals it needs to fight the aging process. IV therapy boosts the antioxidant vitamins and minerals levels in your body much more effectively than oral supple-ments. You can choose from a variety of IV cocktails, each designated to help your body repair damage, prevent aging, and recover its youthful vigor. We all want to live healthier lives and a big part of improving one’s health has to do with optimiz-ing nutrition.

Some like their chili filled with meat, while

others prefer it veg-etarian. Area resi-dents recently had an opportunity to vote for their favorite recipe at the Aster Knight Parks Foundation’s 2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser at Sunshine

Ranches Equestrian Park. Contestants prepared a wide range of homemade chili and competed for

the right to claim their recipe as the “Best Chili in Town.” Participants included local restaurants and area residents, as well as Vice Mayor Gary Jablonski and Councilman Steve Breitkreuz.

For a $5 donation, the public received a card that entitled them to taste all of the recipes and vote for their favorite one. Approximately 150 people proceeded

through the line for samples. Elaine Ringger and Family were declared the winners for their Alegria Mango

Farm Chili. Sharron Bush won second place for her Spicy Redhead Chili. Winston and Glennis Simmonds came in third place for their Jamaican Jerk Chili. First and second place winners received a one-of-a-kind cooking pot trophy with a plaque. The winners’ names and “Best Chili in Town” titles were also recorded on bricks that were placed on the commemorative walkway at Town Hall.

This year, Town Administrator Andy Berns added the “Council Cup Challenge,” assigning secret judges to determine which Council Member’s chili recipe was the best. Vice Mayor Jablonski won the challenge and Councilman Breitkreuz received an Honorable Mention.

The event also included live music by School of Rock, kid-friendly entertain-ment, pony rides, a petting zoo and more. Boy Scout Troop 224 grilled hot dogs and hamburgers for donations.

The proceeds will benefit the Aster Knight Parks Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organi-zation dedicated to raising funds for parks, trails, and green space projects within the town of Southwest Ranches.

As the sun sets during the summer solstice on June 20, a group of neighbors from Southwest Ranches will meet for a small informal gathering at Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park. They will celebrate the

official start of summer, as they catch up with old friends and meet some new ones. They will also experience the beauty of Richard Medlock’s sculpture.

The word “solstice” is derived from a combination of Latin words meaning “sun” and “to stand still.” Solstices occur twice a year. They are the longest and short-est days of the year, marking the start of summer and winter, respectively. They are also the best days to witness one of the key design elements of Medlock’s Equestrian Oasis, which is located in the park.

The public art feature reflects both form and function. The main area is shaped like a horseshoe and contains earth berms, stones for seating, a waterfall, fountain and shade trees. A concrete saddle sculpture sits on the western ridge of the berm. It is strategically placed so that it cradles the sunset during summer and winter solstices. When the sun sets, it appears to sit per-fectly in the saddle, where a rider would.

Residents have celebrated the solstice since the park opened in 2004. This year’s

event is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm, leaving enough time for everyone to find a spot for their chair or blanket before the sun sets at 8:15pm. Organizers will serve refreshments.

Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is located at 5840 SW 148 Avenue, just north of Stirling Rd. in Southwest Ranches. It has more than 20 acres of lushly-landscaped open space designed for the enjoyment of residents and their horses. It is the City’s first public recreational facility and a great place to school a horse; walk a dog; meet some friends or enjoy the surroundings. The park includes a 10,400-square foot practice ring, 37,500-square foot show ring, as well as more than 10 acres of horse and nature trails. It also has a playground, rest-room facility and a sheltered seating area.

Mary Jenkins frequently visits the park, but has never attended the celebration. I have seen photos of how beautiful the sun looks when it sets in the saddle, and I am excited to witness it in person,” said Lisa.

“It will also be a great opportunity to meet some of my neighbors.”

There is no charge for the event. The entire community is welcome. For more information, visit swranches.org or call 954-343-7452.

The residents of southwest Ranches have an opportunity to enjoy the Town’s beautiful

parks and rural landscape on a daily basis. In fact, Southwest Ranches has more trees than residents. Students were recently invited to celebrate their surroundings by participating in the Schools & Education Advisory Board’s 5th Annual Arbor Day Art Exhibition. They created drawings that represent the impact that trees have on their lives.

Approximately 100 kindergarten students from Hawk’s Bluff Elementary School participated in the Exhibition. This year’s theme was “Trees are Terrific… in all shapes and sizes.” Their work was displayed at Town Hall. Each student received a certificate for their participation.

“The exhibition helps to create and foster awareness of the importance of trees and their many benefits for our com-munity,” said Town Arborist December Lauretano-Haines.

This is actually the second time this year that the residents of Southwest Ranches have celebrated Arbor Day. Although National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April, many states and cities observe Arbor Day on differ-ent dates according to their best tree plant-

ing times. Southwest Ranches and the State of Florida celebrate Arbor Day on the third Friday in January.

Lauretano-Haines says that the Town plans to run the student art exhibition again next year, but will also seek participation from other schools in the area. The theme will be centered around the importance of trees for wildlife/and OUR life.

For information, call 954-434-0008 or send an email to [email protected].

Learning the game of golf can be intimi-dating, especially for children. This summer, Davie Golf and Country Club and Greenway Golf Course

Management are offering the SNAG (Starting New At Golf) program, which makes learning the game a little easier for all ages and abilities. The Davie classes are for ages 4 – 15.

“SNAG is an innovative, fun, and easy way to teach the fundamentals of golf to new players,” said Danny Boswell, General Manager/Director of Golf at Davie Golf and Country Club.

Although the teaching method is new at Davie Golf and Country Club, it was first introduced approximately 10 years ago. Similar concepts are used in baseball, ten-nis and other sports.

All SNAG classes are supervised by a PGA Pro from the club and limited to 20 students. The kids learn in a small, safe area, so they do not have to worry about the rules of a regulation golf course or driving range. They use specially designed equipment, including oversized clubs and balls, colorful hole markers, and Velcro targets.

“We simplify the instruction, so the kids get immediate gratification,” said Boswell. “This allows them to transi-tion more easily to a traditional game of golf.”

There will be two sessions this summer. The first session will be held from June 10 - June 26. All children who complete the SNAG course will be able to play in a special kids’ tournament on June 28. The second session will be held from July 15 – 31, with the kids’ tournament on August 2. The cost for the 3-week sessions is $109 per child.

Davie’s SNAG youth golf program has been funded by the net proceeds of the James B. Pirtle Memorial Golf Classic, held in February each year during the Orange Blossom Festival. Approximately $3,000 was used to pay for the SNAG equipment. Additional proceeds will be used to provide free SNAG classes to several disadvan-taged youth from the area, who will be selected by the Town of Davie’s Parks and Recreation Department.

To register for the SNAG summer program, visit the Davie Golf & Country Club pro shop, 8201 Nova Drive, in Davie, or call 954-797-4653.

betty schultze honored as woman of the year

Betty schultZe of cooPer city was among 13 women who were recently honored at the 1000+ Club to Benefit Cancer’s 2014 Women

of the Year. The 1000+ Club recognized 13 nonprofit organizations at its annual luncheon, and each one honored a dedicated member.

The 1000+ Club to Benefit Cancer, Inc. is commit-ted to the targeting and control of cancer in Broward County. The club provides money, collected through fundraising events and dues, to selected nonprofit cancer organizations in support of cancer research, cancer education, and cancer patient services.

Schultze was honored by the Royal Dames of Cancer Research. Since 1969, the Royal Dames have been raising funds to support the critical study and research being done at the Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research, which recently moved to the new, world-class Nova Southeastern University Center for Collaborative Research. Both the Institute and NSU are part of the scientific community that is working together in the search for a cure for cancer.

JoAnne Lewis, longtime member of the Royal Dames, nominated Schultze for the award.

“Betty is a dedicated member of the Royal Dames,” said Lewis. “She always steps up to the plate when she is asked to do something. She is a wonderful per-son, a terrific honoree, and we are very proud of her.”

Schultze has been a member of the Royal Dames for 20 years. She has held

several offices and is currently the treasurer. “I am very proud to be a member of the Royal Dames

and inspired by all of the women in the group,” said Schultze. “I believe that we are so close to finding a cure for many types of cancer and the Royal Dames are doing their part to help. The Royal Dames support cancer research that is right in my backyard and I feel strongly about its local ties to the community.”

Schultze also volunteers at a variety of other charities, such as Women in Distress, Hospice, Florida Philharmonic, Gold Coast Guild of Cystic Fibrosis, Coalition of Pulmonary Fibrosis, Symphony of the Americas, and 1000 Plus Club to Benefit Cancer.

She currently works as a financial advisor for a large banking institution in South Florida. Throughout her career, she has achieved some of the highest designa-tions in the financial securities industry, including CFP® (Certified Financial Planner). She was the Senior Vice President at three publicly traded companies.

Shultze was born and raised in Reno, Nevada. After living in Detroit, Michigan, she moved to South Florida in 1992. She has been married to Steve for 32 years. She has two sons, Christian and Braeden, and three pets,

Atticus, Tulip and Kabuki.

community news

The soroPtimist international club of davie recently Pre-sented the Violet Richardson Award and Women’s Opportunity Awards at their annual awards ceremony.

Soroptimist is an international volunteer-service organization for business and professional women who work together to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. Davie’s local chapter has been help-ing local women and girls with education opportunities since it was established in 1983.

The group has 32 members that meet at noon on the first and third Tuesday of the month at Vienna Café in Davie. They support service projects, such as the EASE Foundation, Hope Outreach, Old Davie School, PACE Center for Girls Broward, Project Stable, Partner In Education with Davie Elementary School, Wounded Warriors and more.

“It’s the greatest group of women on the planet,” said Constance Ruppender, an active member since 2003. “We have a whole lot of fun getting together, while raising money to help others. We share the desire to make the world a better place, and I can’t think of a better group to do that with.”

The Women’s Opportunity Award gives deserving women in the community a “hand up” to help with their education. Often times these women are single mothers seeking

a way to improve the quality of their lives. This award helps to fulfill that purpose. This year, the club presented the award to Leah Marlowe, a court reporting student at Sheridan Technical Center, and Cindy Lespinasse, who is attending Nova Southeastern University’s nursing school to become a nurse practitioner. Each one received $1,500 toward education expenses. Lespinasse also won at the regional level, and received an additional $3,000.

The Violet Richardson Award is presented to a young girl, between the ages of 14 and 17, who identifies a need in the community and then organizes and implements a plan to meet that need. This year’s winner was Mina Entessar, a student at Cooper City High School. Mina was recognized for her Breast Cancer Awareness project. She received $750. The Susan B. Komen Center also received a $250 donation in Mina’s honor.

Each year, SI Davie gives these awards to deserving women in the community. Applications are accepted in November of each year and are available on the clubs website, www.sidavie.org

Of the 762 students at davie elementary school, 83% are on free or reduced lunch. Gloria Dei Lutheran Church has “adopted” many of the school’s low income students and their families to ensure that they get

the help they need. The partnership has helped to bridge the gap between home, school and community.

“The partnership allows our staff to help the Davie Elementary children and families who struggle on a daily basis, and provides much needed nourishment for our children,” said Assistant Principal Monica Schlosser. “The program helps parents know that we care about them and the community in which they live. Davie Elementary is truly here to educate the ‘whole’ child, from free breakfast, academic support and excellence (we are an A school) to providing students with

shoes and food for the weekend.”

Since 2011, Cheryl Masinelli, wife of Pastor Tony Masinelli, has been organiz-ing the program for the church, which is located only two blocks from the school.

“Many of these families fall through the cracks,” said Masinelli. “The free breakfast or lunch they receive may be their only meal. They live in our backyard and we want to make sure they do not go hungry.”

Every Friday, the church prepares bags for approximately 140 students to take home and eat over the weekend. Each bag contains a protein, soup, breakfast item, juice boxes, treat and crack-ers. In the past three years, the church has fed over 430 families.

When Masinelli learned that some of the students were wearing flip flops to school, prevent-ing them from participating in recess, the church collected over 100 gift cards to Payless for $20 each. There were enough to provide shoes for all of the students who needed them, as well as some extras to keep in the office for the future.

At the beginning of the school year, the church gave students in need a back-pack full of school supplies. During the holidays, families received food baskets and gift cards. This month, the church will distribute over 1,500 books to all of the students at the school to enjoy over the summer.

In addition, the church has provided several families with assistance when extraordinary circumstances have occurred. They have helped with health care, counseling, transportation, and more. They even donated a bike, so that one of the school’s families could get to work each day.

Gloria Dei Lutheran Church is located at 7601 SW 39th Street in Davie. To volunteer or make a donation, call 954-475-0683.

According to the dePartment of Transportation, more than 5,000 teens are injured or killed nation-

wide during a typical prom weekend. To help prevent these tragedies, students at Cooper City High School participated in the annual “Prom Nightmare” event prior to prom season. They got a realistic look at the potential dangers of combining drink-ing and driving, and witnessed how one bad decision can have life-altering effects.

Approximately 1,000 juniors and seniors gathered in the school’s stadium to watch a graphic re-enactment of a severe crash that included several members of the senior class. Two crashed cars were staged on the football field. Students watched as bloodied and injured victims were treated at the scene. When rescue attempts failed, the prom queen was placed in a body bag and escorted off the

field in a funeral home hearse.

To make this happen, The Division of Trauma Services at Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children’s

Hospital joined forces with the Cooper City High School administration, Broward County Schools, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Cooper City District, BSO Air Rescue, Boyd Panciera Funeral Home and the Broward County Medical Examiner’s office.

“The Memorial Regional Hospital Trauma team believes in the value of events like these to prevent traumatic injuries,” said Candace Pineda, trauma program manager at Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

“Statistics show that they have had a dramatic effect on decreasing the number of teen injuries and death during prom season.”

Trauma is the leading cause of death of Floridians ages 1-44 every year. Florida’s trauma centers treat more than 40,000 trauma victims each year with positive outcomes, discharging three-fourths of these patients back home to their communities.

Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD), originators of Prom Nightmare, claim that across the country in the past 30 days, 26.4% of students between the ages of 12 and 20 used alcohol and approximately 17% have been involved in binge drinking.

CooPer city high school recently Put a new sPin on the Play Much Ado About Nothing, turning the Shakespeare comedy into a musi-cal and updating its premise to appeal to a modern day audience. The

original plot, which centers around a prince and his officers arriving home from a successful battle, was turned into a boy band’s homecoming following their world tour.

Staying true to the central theme of the antics which occur between two pairs of lovers, director Angela Thomas sought a way to make the play more relevant to its cast and audience of high school students. One of the couples, Benedick and Beatrice, played by seniors Patrick O’Dea and Megan Ellett, have broken up and gotten back together multiple times. The other couple, Claudio and Hero, played by junior Peter Pera and senior Skylar Hinds, fall in love, but are thwarted by the actions of Don John, the villain. Don John, played by senior Aaron Rones, wreaks chaos on the two couples, which leads to a staged affair and feigned death.

Alongside the main characters, seniors David Castorena, Mark Yarce, Sarah Park; junior Zack Levine; sophomore Jennifer Lopez; and freshman Alec De Jesus all added to the production with their notable performances. It was senior Melanie Cossin, however, who really gave the show its unique look. Cossin, who took on the job of choreographer once again after successfully bringing some modern moves to A Midsummer Night’s Dream last year, was excited to go out with a bang for her final production at the high school.

“Dance has been my passion for as long as I can remember,” Cossin said. “When I was younger I always dreamed of becoming a choreographer, so when I was given the chance to have my dances featured in this show, I was more than happy to contribute.”

Bringing Shakespeare into the 21st century is no easy task, but Cossin’s visions were brought to life, making the audience feel as if they were actually at a rock

concert.“My choreography was solely based on pop-culture,” Cossin said. “From The

Beatles to The Village People to One Direction, the goal of the dance moves was to draw the audience into the story through recognizable songs and iconic steps from some of their favorite boy band eras.”

As for next year, there’s no word yet on what productions the Cooper City High School drama department has in store. However, no matter what they are, it’s sure to be fun and imaginative.

“I know I’ll definitely be coming down from UCF to support my theatre family with what is sure to be another hit,” Cossin said. “Between the amazing perfor-mance opportunities, creative development process, and countless memories that I’ve made, I’m definitely going to miss the program and the people who became like a second family to me and who I’ll always cherish.”

Sarah Sharpe is a junior at Cooper City High School, where she is the entertainment editor for the school’s newspaper. She is also a Teen Ambassador at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

One of the most misunderstood asPects of the law is the Appeal. Everyone has heard the term, but most people don’t really understand what the process

entails. Although everyone technically has the right to appeal a lower court’s decision, only under limited circumstances will the filing of an appeal be valid.

Appeals in Florida are filed with the District Courts of Appeal. There are 5 District Courts of Appeal, which cover the entire state. In Broward County appeals are filed in the 4th

District Court of Appeal, which is physically located in Palm Beach County. Cases that are appealed in Miami Dade County would be appealed to the 3rd District Court of Appeal, which is located in Miami Dade County.

There are certain deadlines which must be followed in order to file an appeal. An appeal must be filed within 30 days of the date that a final order is signed by the Court. I sometimes get individuals who call me to inquire about an appeal from an order signed six months before. Unfortunately I must inform that they missed the deadline and so the order in question has now become final.

Except under limited circumstances, only final orders can be appealed. If a judge rules unfavorably in a matter during a hearing, that ruling cannot usually be appealed until a final order is signed.

An appeal is not a re-trial of the case. An appeal does not require witnesses to come to court and give testimony all over again. It is not a “DO OVER.” In an appeal you are asking a three judge panel to review the lower courts decisions to determine if there were any errors of law. If a judge does not allow certain testimony or evidence to be introduced into a trial, that may be an error of law and can be appealed. If a judge listens to testimony and does not believe a wit-ness, that is a matter of credibility and cannot be appealed. As you can see, the process is very technical in nature.

Only issues which are preserved can be appealed. If in a divorce the couple voluntarily enters into a Marital Settlement Agreement, neither one can subse-quently file an appeal, since an Agreement was reached. Such an agreement is binding upon the parties. If, however, the parties do not reach an Agreement, and a Judge issues a Final Judgment, either party may file an appeal and question the Court’s ruling.

Statistics show that only a very small percentage of appeals are in fact granted. In most instances, if an appeal is granted; the case is sent back to the trial court for further proceedings; consistent with the Appellate Court’s ruling. There generally is no time limit for an Appellate Court to decide and waiting 12 months for a decision is not all that unusual.

I strongly suggest that if you are considering an appeal, make sure you are within your 30 day window and hire an attorney.

beautiful in braces

One of my former Patients Just returned from a family trip to his hometown of London. While visiting the home of family friends, his teeth became the focus

of attention. It seemed that everyone in the room wanted a turn to look into his mouth. Lively conversation quickly turned to quiet whispers. His father, having financed braces and whitening in my office, was becoming unnerved by the incident. Finally, the silence was broken by the boy’s uncle. While point-ing at his nephew’s perfectly aligned teeth, he blurted out, “You

have become so AMERICAN.” Yes, it is true. Americans (more so than our English allies) are very conscious

of our teeth and more likely to make corrections to them. Our obsession with our smiles and brightness of teeth is not confined to the adolescent population only. Currently, 25% of all orthodontic treatment nationwide is being done for adults.

I find the focus of my adult orthodontic consultations to be very different com-pared to pediatric consultations. When children are involved, the adults in the room are more interested in the diagnosis. Esthetics can become secondary to the long term health of the teeth and mouth. The method of treatment and how the braces will look is less of a concern. In some ways, seeing a 12 year old in metal braces is the norm.

Adults (and older teens) have usually already diagnosed themselves at the time of consultation. They point to what bothers them and are mostly interested in the process. Their biggest concerns tend to revolve around the appliances (yes, that is what orthodontists call the things that move teeth) that will be moving the teeth. Essentially, they want to know what it will look like and how long it will be used. It makes perfect sense.

The person who cares about how their teeth look will also be sensitive to how they will look while fixing them. This is the main reason for the popularity of removable aligners such as Invisalign. Esthetically, they are not very noticeable, and can be removed when needed. Still, there are certain patients whose treat-ment goals require the use of bonded appliances or “braces.” Some of these patients are reluctant to make the commitment to being in braces for more than six months.

I recently read an interesting study which relates to this issue precisely. The study tested whether braces had any effect on a person’s perceived attractive-ness. Images of subjects were used without braces, with metal braces and with ceramic (white) braces. These images were shown to two groups. One group was chosen at random and the other consisted of the subjects themselves (the ones wearing the braces). The images were rated in terms of specific characteristics including beauty, age, intelligence, and success. The results showed that the wearing of braces (metal or ceramic) did not affect how people were perceived by the randomly chosen group. This suggests that people in braces are not per-ceived differently by others. There was, however, a significant difference in the second group. This suggests wearing braces created a negative self perception. This just proves the saying that “perception is reality.”

As for my former patient, he is considering matriculating in a university back in England. He has also stopped wearing his retainer and has decided that his teeth are “straight enough.” His father has decided to stay in Florida and will begin his orthodontic treatment this summer. Coincidence? I think not.

Having been in this business for over 30 years, I have worked with all types of buyers and sellers. Even though our inventory is increasing, it remains a seller’s

market. I have noticed some sellers are attempting to “go it on their own” - thinking they will save money. Statistics, however, have shown the contrary.

Consider these:

There are a plethora of people to interact with. ▸ The buyer who wants the best deal possible ▸ The buyer’s agent who does not represent the seller and is solely working

in the best interest of the buyer ▸ The buyer’s attorney ▸ The home inspector, who is “hired” by the buyer and is working on behalf

of the buyer ▸ The appraiser (if contingent on financing or contingent on appraisal)

Exposure to the unrepresented publicWe lock our doors, cars, and computer equipment, yet we would let strangers

in our home “unrepresented” by a professional Real Estate Agent.

Exposure to prospective purchasersRecent studies have shown that 92% of buyers search online for a home and

only 28% are reading a printed newspaper. Most real estate agents have an inter-net strategy to promote the sale of your home, including MLS, websites, virtual tours and the list goes on.

Results from the internetWhere do buyers find the home they

actually purchased? ▸ 43% on the internet ▸ 9% from a yard sign ▸ 1% from newspapers

The days of selling your home by a yard sign and placing an expensive three-line “text” ad in the newspaper are long gone. Having a strong internet strategy is critical.

Selling on your own has become too difficult.

The paperwork involved in selling and buying a home has increased dramati-cally, as industry disclosures and regula-tions have become mandatory. This is one of the reasons that the percentage of people selling on their own has dropped from 19% to 9% over the last 20+ years.

You will net more money when using an agent. Many homeowners believe that they will save the real estate fee by selling on

their own. The main reason buyers look at your “unrepresented” home sale is because they believe they can save on the fee.

According to Steve Harney, national Real Estate prognosticator, studies have shown that the typical house sold by the homeowner sells for $184,000 while the typical house sold by an agent sells for $230,000. This doesn’t mean that an agent can get $46,000 more for your home. However, the list price a homeowner plucks from thin air is no match to a full-fledged comparative market analysis including multiple metrics carefully prepared by an experienced Real Estate professional.

Bottom LineWhen you, the homeowner, see the marketing strategies, time and money com-

mitted to marketing, as well as years of experience in negotiating and dealing with all personality types, you would think more than twice before “going it on your own.”

arthroscopy of the foot and ankleBy rOBert h. sheinBerg, D.p.m., D.a.B.p.s., f.a.C.f.a.s.

Foot and ankle inJuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many struc-tures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining

may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on.

These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing

in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive weight-bearing. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist.

When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medica-tion or rehabilitation, arthroscopic sur-gery may be neces-sary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle.

A miniature cam-era is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized and small instruments, includ-ing laser, are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion.

Arthroscopy can be used to treat conditions such as: chronic joint pain and swelling; arthritis and bone spurs; loose bone and cartilage fragments; stiff, scarred joints; chronic instability; and ankle fractures that have not completely recovered.

The advantages to arthroscopy include: faster recovery; less pain and swell-ing; avoids large incisions; low risk of infection; outpatient procedures; and quicker return to activities.

Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail to alleviate the pain and deformity of a joint, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible.

light control – Shutters are excellent for room darkening in bedrooms and media rooms. Design tip - If you want 100% light block note there are small light gaps you get with shutters.

size matters – Vane sizes range from 2½” to 4½” vanes. Design tip - My advice, go for the large 4½” louvers on large openings. This opens up the view to create an open feel. For sliding panels use 3½” louvers or else your frame projects too far into the room.

tilt style – Front tilt is more traditional while the rear tilt (upcharge) is more contemporary. Design tip - avoid front tilt bar if your panel sizes are narrow. It can look crowded.

“RESEARCH SHOWS THAT COMBINING LEARNING WITH BRAIN FITNESS, ALLOWS STUDENTS TO EXCEL EXPONENTIALLY.” - Dr. Fabian Redler

ask the expert

I recently sat down with the parents of a middle school student who has managed to

barely get by in school. When we finished an in-depth testing process, we discovered that he has some serious learning problems. His parents told me with aching regret, that in the past, they had

punished their son and taken things away because they had been told that his poor performance in school was due to “laziness and a behavior prob-lem.” He had been to well-known tutoring companies, was receiving extra help at school, and his parents even went as far as consulting a psychiatrist about medication.

Have you ever seen one of these kids that look “lazy”? Maybe they always have their head on the desk. Others just never seem to be able to get started or finish. Or maybe they just seem tired all the time, moving slowly, working slowly, barely able to muster any energy until it’s time for recess, P.E., or lunch. When asked about homework, they might say they didn’t have time, or didn’t have the right book, or maybe even say they just didn’t feel like doing it.

When teachers have gone “above and beyond,” done all they can do and the student doesn’t appear to be trying, lazy is often the only obvious conclusion left. However, what we know about students is that if

they could do the work, they would do it. Not doing work is really embarrassing, and no stu-

dent wants to be embarrassed. So what’s at the bot-tom of this type of lazy-like response? These are often children who have struggled all year long, year after year. Being lazy is an easy way to genuinely protect their pride by avoiding a real difficulty with learning.

Difficulty learning usually has its root in one or more areas of inefficient processing. The brain’s ability to process is quite complex and thus there are a number of things that could go wrong and interfere with school performance. The key to getting these children back on track lies in identifying and strengthening their underlying processing skills, since these are the ‘brain-muscles’ responsible for learning.

The best means of identifying the cause of a child’s “laziness” or struggle is a comprehensive psycho-educational assess-ment administered by a licensed psychologist. This evaluation will provide clear answers about a stu-dent’s ability to process informa-tion, as well as a measure of their intellectual potential, so that par-ents and teachers can determine how high to set their expectations.

The results can then be used to create a specific solu-tion that targets not only academic needs, but also the areas of processing that need to be strengthened.

When processing issues are identified and resolved, you can expect three things to flourish...their learning, their motivation, and their self-worth.

What’s On Your Mind, Inc. – (Center for Tutoring, Psychology, & Brain Training) has been helping kids reach the stars since 2000. For further information, or to schedule an evaluation by a licensed psychologist, call 954-237-0355.

We all deserve a Place to call home and to be treated with dignity and respect – including those experiencing homelessness. Being homeless is not

a crime, and arresting those who are is not the solution. We know that countless people are just one paycheck away from being homeless. No one chooses to be homeless. It can affect anyone at any time and does not have to be a permanent con-dition. Jailing the homeless is the least effective and most costly way of providing social services. We need to explore ways of

providing shelter and support services to this already fragile population. A strict enforcement or arrest approach will not solve the problem but will only continue the cycle of homelessness.

Today, there are approximately 2,900 people in Broward County experiencing homelessness. The many causes include substance abuse, mental health issues and family disintegration, as well as a history of poor decisions and sometimes circumstances that are just beyond one’s control. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Homeless Outreach Initiative includes an agency wide mission to guide our deputies who come into contact with the homeless. The initiative provides depu-ties with homeless awareness training and the knowledge to navigate through the complexities of the social services system. This initiative encourages col-laborations and partnerships between law enforcement, social service agencies and advocates for the homeless. These partnerships are designed to link those experiencing homelessness with appropriate social services while treating the homeless with dignity and respect.

I began the Homeless Outreach Team Specialist Course in 2013 and presently offer this training twice a year. Currently, we have 29 certified specialists and plan to add more than a dozen this year. H.O.T. training is now available to other law enforcement agencies and recently, officers from municipalities including Lauderhill, Davie and Hollywood have been certified.

The Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) is a new way to quickly assess what treatment an individual has received, what has or hasn’t worked and what alternative is recommended, offering a better chance of getting an individual off the streets permanently.

As Sheriff, I believe homeless people aren’t problem people; they are people with problems that can be assisted with compassion and understanding from our community. We can end the cycle of homelessness – not through a handout, but with a helping hand. Through the assistance of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Homeless Outreach Team, we can help these individuals help themselves to reclaim and regain their lives, and that is the right thing to do.

To stay up-to-date about BSO events, crime trends and safety tips, sign up for Sheriff Israel’s e-Alerts at www.sheriff.org/e-alert or join our Facebook fan page at Broward Sheriff’s Office (official) or follow us on Twitter@browardsheriff.

Concussion. What was once a word mostly associated with professional athletes has now become a worry for parents of athletes of all ages. While a standard sports physical is required by nearly

all school and youth sports leagues, this will not provide doctors with important information about a child’s cognitive abilities should a concussion occur. A baseline concussion test will provide

physicians valuable clinical information to use if a child suffers a concussion.

A complete history and physical along with the baseline concussion test is the best way to protect a young athlete’s safety.

For the health and well-being of our community’s student athletes, Broward Health Urgent Care is offering the following exams at all three urgent care centers:

Sports Physical & EKG $65 • Baseline Concussion Testing $15 Total: $80

Ages 10-18 years. By appointment only. Insurance does not cover these exams.

Payment will be due at the time of the appointment.
