The fashion show

at the Scottish

Asian Wedding

Show has been

organised with

love and devotion

to showcase some

of the country’s

most exciting

Asian designers.

From selecting the

gorgeous outfits and making sure the hair

and makeup is perfect, to sorting out

the lighting and choreography, there’s

a lot of work involved in organising a

fashion show! Ever wondered what goes

on behind the scenes? Get ready for an

exclusive peek into the glamorous and

exciting world beyond the catwalk…

There are seventeen female and six male

models in the show, and all of them

are professional and experienced in

what they do. Most of the models have

been sourced by choreographer Nadim

Saleem. The models are really put to the

test as they only have one rehearsal,

which is the day before the show, almost

like intense army training! Such proximity

to the event means it’s imperative that

everything runs smoothly, and there’s a

lot of pressure on the organisers and of

course the models!

Six designers will be featured in the

show, and these are Imani, Khushboo’s

by Chand, Anjalis Boutique, Rabab

Designer Wear, Suits Me and Pardah

Collection. The music is provided by

G-Town Desi. To ensure the models are

looking their absolute best, the fashion

show organisers have enlisted the help of

expert makeup artist Abbas Asghar, who

is travelling from Manchester specially

to make sure the models are preened to

perfection!

The show has a couple of particularly

exciting participants. Miss Ireland 2010,

Alesha Gallen, will be modelling. Also

showcasing will be Rameet Sandhu, who

has reached the top 50 of Miss Scotland.

In terms of getting into modelling, working

hard is a given, but what about that first

step? Being in the right place at the right

time may be a big part of it. One of the

models, Tindy, explains how she got into

modelling through her sister: “Two years

ago I was asked to bring a pair of shoes

to my sister, who’s a model, and I turned

up to the shoot and then they asked me

if I could help them, because somebody

had dropped out, and that’s pretty much

it.” Not a bad result for doing someone a

favour!

Modelling conjures up ideas of glamour

and sophistication. Models just spend all

day pouting and reclining on couches,

don’t they? Not so. Male model Kashif

says “It is hard work, and I don’t think

people appreciate how much hard

work actually goes into it. During a shoot

you need lots of patience.” He also

explains that models need to have a

strong character in order to succeed;

it can be an extremely tough industry.

“I think the hardest thing to deal with is

rejection. If you have your heart set on

some assignment and then you don’t get

it, you have to still have faith in yourself

and keep pushing.” Apart from the

competitive nature of the industry and

the long, tiring days, model Zarina says

the job is generally good fun. “The best

thing about modelling is meeting new

people and having a laugh, and trying

out nice glamorous clothes!”

Indeed, the models agree that despite

the clothes, the pampering, the glamour

and the glitz, the best thing about

modelling is meeting new people. “I’ve

made so many good friends through

doing this”, says Kashif, “and they’re

people you would never normally meet in

everyday life.”

Cake? Tick. Venue? Tick. Invitations? Tick. What can be more satisfying than ticking off those never ending tasks that have been plaguing you for months on end in the lead up to your big day? You’re making progress, things are coming together and you’re gleefully ticking off all those niggling worries that are finally done and dusted on your lengthy wedding to-do list.

Hold that thought... Before you blushing brides-to-be rush to put down your pen and rip up the offending list in triumphant victory, there’s just one more essential to add to it... another list! Try not to pull your hair out just yet ladies; this particular list will be quite the treat to put together – your gift list, that one off occasion when you can actually comprise a list of things you want that people will buy for you and it’s totally acceptable, even traditional.

So, what do you ask your guests for? What do you really want or need? What do people conventionally ask for? Homeware? Crockery? Vouchers? Goats? Yes, you read correctly – those creatures with beards that eat everything in sight, and we’re not talking about any potential grooms-to-be here!

Throwing in a random farm animal to your wedding wish list isn’t some kooky or mod trend which you haven’t heard about yet but rather serves an important, ethical purpose in making a huge difference to someone’s life in an impoverished, third world country.

Why not add an unexpected twist to your wish list and celebrate the very gift of giving on your special day? Oxfam Unwrapped present an exciting new approach to the typical gift inventory with a range of charitable gifts designed to make a lasting difference to people all around the world. Soon to wed couples can simply go online, select their gift choices and send their requests out to guests via beautiful Oxfam Unwrapped gift list cards or the nifty email widget.

You can choose from an array of ethical options, from solar panels to safe drinking water or health check-ups to teachers, benefiting single individuals or indeed entire communities in some of the worlds most underdeveloped and poverty stricken locations.

Since the charitable and unique gift lists were launched in 2007, they have made an impressive £800,000, going a long way to help fight poverty in more than 70 countries around the world.

Rick Lay, manager for Oxfam Unwrapped thinks the ethical idea may even inspire the biggest royal wedding of the decade, he said: “The Oxfam Unwrapped wedding list makes it so easy to add something different to the big day and it can be chosen in addition to a traditional store list. A couple of goats, health check-ups and classroom kits are guaranteed to get people smiling, both at the wedding and in the communities where these gifts will be used. Maybe even William and Kate will have a look at the endless possibilities on offer on the new shop page and start a personalised Oxfam Unwrapped list”.

The Oxfam Unwrapped wedding gift list is truly a list with a difference that importantly makes a difference. Long after the last of the cake crumbs have been consumed, the final cameras have been flashed and the remaining guests have cleared the dance floor, the gifts will continue to influence and make a long-lasting difference for those in need.

If you want something else a bit different to break other conventional wedding traditions, Oxfam Unwrapped also offer stunning wedding favours sets, making every guest feel important. Couples can purchase beautifully designed and recycled gift cards representing animal vaccinations to safe water to improve the lives of those living in poverty. These wedding favours really do break the ice and get your guests talking at the table!

If you’ve come round to the idea of a fresh approach to wedding planning and would like more information on Oxfam Unwrapped, please visit the official website at www.oxfam.org.uk/weddings.

The brand new site also offers essential expert wedding advice and useful tips on how to save money on planning your big day, a shopping section stocking a selection of fantastic wedding items from dresses to jewellery at a fraction of the cost as well as personal wedding stories to inspire you.

ho doesn’t want to

look their very best on

their wedding day?

On this one day, your

childhood fantasies come true and

you can be a princess; a lustrous vision

of health and beauty. But with all the

meticulous planning and preparation

involved in organising your big day, it

can be easy to forget the effect this is

having on your appearance. With an

array of ground-breaking treatments

out there to enhance your natural

beauty and make the best of your

appearance, your wedding is the

perfect excuse to treat yourself. If you

fancy putting a spring in your step and

becoming every inch the blushing

bride, now could be the time to take

advantage of the wealth and diversity

of treatments available.

There’s the age-old adage that if

you feel good on the inside, you’ll

look good on the outside. But if you

don’t feel good – if you’re bothered

by acne, or can’t stop thinking about

some unwanted hair on your upper

lip – it’s hard to relax and enjoy your

wedding celebrations. The beauty

of today’s skin treatments lies in their

subtlety. Celebrities from Cameron

Diaz to Katie Holmes to Salma Hayek

are rumoured to have had work

done, and ladies, the key word here

is ‘rumoured’– many of the aesthetic

and cosmetic treatments available

are so subtle that you just can’t tell

whether that youthful glow is down

to good genes or the wonders of

technology. The real test of treatments

lies in whether they enhance your

natural beauty, showcasing what’s

already there. We’re so over the Lesley

Ash trout-pout and there’s been a

progression away from experimental

surgery towards gentler, more natural

approaches and beautiful, subtle

results. In 2011, there’s no room for

fakery (à la Katie Price) and less is

more. After all, a bride should exude

radiant elegance. Your wedding is

the one time everything can revolve

around you and you want your pure

beauty to shine through.

The way in which women choose to

enhance their appearance has long

been the concern of skin specialists

worldwide, and some of the most

ground-breaking and exciting

therapies in beauty have now, for the

first time, been brought to Scotland.

Sculpta Cosmetic Clinic, with clinics in

London and Edinburgh, have brought

their cutting-edge treatments to

Glasgow with their recently-opened

pioneering clinic in the West End.

The venture is at the forefront of the

most exciting new technology in

aesthetic and cosmetic treatments.

From soothing skin treatments such as

Microdermabrasion to the revolutionary

Carboxytherapy – hailed as the biggest

beauty therapy breakthrough since

Botox – as well as painless hair removal,

cosmetic surgery and dentistry, Sculpta

Cosmetic Clinic’s wide range of

Sculpting the New Face of Beauty

You’ve bought the dress. You’ve booked the venue. But have you thought about your skin?

Occasions brings you the very latest on treatments designed with you in mind – for a show-stopping appearance that’s truly radiant.

OCCASIONS 21

Page 22: Occasions issue #4

treatments really do provide something

for everyone. The clinic is the only

one in Scotland to offer painless hair

removal treatment which is suitable

for all skin types. It’s worth adding that

these treatments are also available

to men. (Wise up, ladies – is this the

chance to whip your man into shape

and finally get rid of that back hair?)

So if the stress of planning your

wedding has left you feeling tired

and slightly out-of-joint, (organising

flowers and seating plans really does

take it out of you, we know...) perhaps

what you need is some rehydration to

refresh your appearance and leave

your skin feeling firm and supple.

There are many ways to create a

smoother skin appearance, including

Microdermabrasion and Laser

treatment.

Another common beauty problem

faced by many young women is dark

circles and bags under the eyes. This is

either a result of too many late nights

at the office, or too much partying

(who are we to judge?). Or maybe it’s

just because you’re worrying about

the possibility of abu and khala having

an argument over the buffet at your

reception. All we know is that tired,

puffy skin and dark shadows do not a

blushing bride make. So how can you

avoid looking like a panda on the big

day? One option is Carboxytherapy,

an exciting new treatment which

is being used at Sculpta to treat,

amongst other things, the appearance

of dark eyes. Well, it’s reassuring that

any late nights leading up to the

big day won’t make an unwelcome

appearance in your wedding photos!

Talking of wedding photos; in addition

to the glossy, sultry pout you’ll surely

have perfected by now, the smile is

the real seller in your photographic

memories of the day, and if you fancy

adding a bit of sparkle to brush up your

gnashers, you should consider laser

teeth whitening with the lasting result

of a brightened smile. For long-lasting

changes to your smile, custom-made

veneers can be used to align crowded

teeth or lighten the colour.

So whether it’s that annoying cellulite

that’s bugging you, or you simply

fancy a bit of pampering to shed

the skin of pre-wedding stress, why

not book a consultation now, and

see what Sculpta can do for you?

You deserve it after all the hard work

planning your wedding, and you might

just find yourself pleasantly surprised.

Dr. Ahmad, Harley Street expert and

specialist cosmetic doctor at the

clinic, says: ‘It is humbling to be part

of making a patient more confident

and happier in themselves due to the

nature of what we do.’ Happiness

in yourself, and pleasure in your

appearance? What more could you

need to inspire you with confidence for

your most special of days?

All of Sculpta’s treatments are

performed by highly qualified and

experienced staff, who provide a

consultation with you before any

treatment goes ahead. You can

discuss your aspirations with them, and

although we’re not promising absolute

miracles, (they can’t guarantee you

will come out looking like Angelina

Jolie) they will do their very best to

ensure that treatments are tailored to

meet your expectations and provide

excellent results. It’s especially handy if

you’re nervous at all, as it gives you a

chance to meet the staff and ask any

questions you may have. The clinic is

also unique in that it provides 24-hour

on call medical cover, to ease any

worries about potential reactions to

treatments. It is this level of support and

aftercare that really sets Sculpta aside

from other clinics of its kind.

Male & Female Eyebrow ImplantsAs an alternative to permanent tattoos, eyebrow implants are increasingly being used to correct mismatched eyebrows or thinning brow hair. Using the revolutionary Direct Hair Implantation technique, Sculpta are now offering this treatment for both men and women. Eyebrow tattoos can look clownish, whereas eyebrow implants offer a longer lasting, more natural result.

MicrodermabrasionMicrodermabrasion is a well-known treatment which gently and effectively removes dead skin cells by using diamond heads, promoting collagen stimulation. At Sculpta, the treatment is then followed by Oxygen Therapy which leaves your skin rejuvenated, feeling firmer and creating the radiance of a blushing bride.

Laser TreatmentFor the appearance of smoother skin, there is nothing more effective than IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Laser treatment. This involves the emission of an intense burst of light through the top layer of skin, which penetrates the deeper layers of skin, removing unwanted cells and promoting new collagen formation. This unique technology can be used for a variety of purposes; from reducing the appearance of open pores and wrinkles, to the removal of thread veins, pigmentation and acne scars.

CarboxytherapyPerhaps the most exciting treatment offered by Sculpta, it is being described as the biggest breakthrough since Botox. Carboxytherapy, which is said to take years off the skin, has only been available in Scotland since the start of 2011 and its numerous benefits include the eradication of under eye dark circles. It is also used to treat cellulite, stretch marks and facial scars. Currently huge in the U.S, it is now taking Scotland by storm. It involves injections of carbon dioxide gas just under the skin’s surface. This causes blood vessels to dilate, providing a rush of oxygen and nutrients to the area. Kyra Panchenko, Sex and the City make-up artist, is quoted as saying “everyone is asking what I have done to make my skin look so good.”

Vaser LipoHailed as the next generation in body contouring, vaser liposuction involves the use of ultrasound technology to eliminate body fat. It can be used to treat multiple areas at once, sculpting a smoother silhouette. In contrast to traditional liposuction, the state-of-the-art technology is able to differentiate between fat and other issue, making the procedure far less painful. This also speeds the recovery process, giving Vaser Lipo the nickname ‘Lunch-time Lipo’.

FASHIONFOCUS

When Shama Ali made up her mind to start wearing the abaya back in 2009, she became quickly disheartened and disappointed by the lack of variety, colour and styles available in and around the shopping boutiques of Glasgow.

Eager to step out, shop around and find comfy, stylish and most importantly, modest attire to fit around her faith choices, Shama was soon discouraged by the drab fashion options on offer. Trailing the streets of Scotland and hoping to find faith-friendly couture that was both stylish and unique to express her personality, Shama time and time again came across abayas that were mostly bland and black.

Fed up of what was, or indeed what wasn’t on offer and the lack lustre clothing choices, Shama made the innovative and gutsy decision to start up her very own Islamic fashion range catering for all age groups and genders. Voila! Pardah Collections was born, bestowing a unique range of abaya and jilbabs based on Middle Eastern tradition with a funky modern infusion.

With a notable shortage of retailers selling modern Islamic attire here in Scotland, Pardah Collections fills a huge gap in the market. Shama spoke about her successful venture, her aspirations and her own unique style that the started the whole thing off.

“Our clients are of both genders and all ages. The Fashion label Pardah provides a unique range of abaya and jilbabs based on Middle Eastern tradition with a modern infusion. Our designs perfectly compliment the strong, sassy and confident woman of today, who embodies the pure essence of a 21st century woman whose beauty lies not only in her personality but in her elegance and sophistication as well.”

Since the launch of the exclusive range, Shama has attracted plenty of positive feedback from old and new clients alike looking for something they simply can’t get elsewhere. What consistently rings loud and clear is that with limited Islamic clothing choices, Pardah stands out and offers something different and unique, even sporting its very own men’s range.

This month, Occasions chatted exclusively to Shama Ali, the young Glaswegian fashion entrepreneur behind Pardah Collections, the up and coming Islamic clothing range suitable for all ages and genders.

“Our hijabs and matching accessories are selling very well as they are unique, stylish, affordable and suitable for all! Pardah Collections men’s range has also been a huge hit! We are proud to say that we are the only distributor for lawung in Scotland.”

Inspired to start the venture due to her own love of fashion, Shama is especially enjoying shopping around for the products which will be incorporated into the range. However, with so much to choose from, it can be no easy feat for a young woman passionate about fashion!

“I love all the products! Shopping for our products is so difficult; I always want one of everything! If I had to pick one favourite item, it would be the hijabs, they are all unique and instantly transform a plain abaya.”

Shama, who began accessorizing her hijabs as soon as she made the choice to wear them, confessed it took some getting used to. “In the beginning, it took a while to get used to wearing the hijab and pinning it up. As soon as I learned what suits me there was no stopping me! I have a cupboard full of them and I simply can’t stop myself from buying them. I love to wear them in the Arab style as it holds longer and is more secure and because most of my family wear hijabs, we are constantly trying out new products and styles to see what suits better.” Shama also spoke about the fashion crazes she sees for 2011 and how colour will be the number one trend infusing Islamic clothing design.

“This year I definitely see a lot more colour being incorporated with black. Go with how you feel on the day! Accessorising with a little brooch or band adds instant bling to any hijab. For the future, I see abaya, jilbabs and jubbas being very fashion forward. Lots more colour and various materials. Hoods, snoods, leather, buttons, ruffles and more...”

This young Muslimah who has a keen eye for faith-friendly fashion and an ambitious, entrepreneurial spirit is a real inspiration. She has great expectations for her distinctive range and is setting herself impressive goals: “My hopes for Pardah Collections are to become a huge success and to see our products on some of the most elite catwalks and boutique.”

Currently an online store, the young fashionista also has high hopes to move from the World Wide Web to the streets of Scotland by setting up shop in Glasgow. With the ever growing popularity of the collection and the huge customer demand for it, it looks like we won’t have too long a wait!

Watch this space, we think Pardah Collections will blossom, bloom and branch out in no time!

If you’re dying to have a sneak peek at the unique clothing range, get yourself along to the Scottish Asian Wedding Show on 17th April 2011 where Shama will be exhibiting her must-have classy couture, accessories and jewellery.

And if you simply can’t wait then log on to the net and browse the beautiful fashion ranges from the comfort of your own home by visiting the official online store at www.pardah.co.uk. Visitors to the site also have the opportunity to donate to the Well Foundation, a charity promoting safe, clean water to the world’s most poverty-stricken locations.

How to have the Honeymoon of

your Dreams

AwayUp

Upand

Page 36: Occasions issue #4

For lots of newly-married couples, the

honeymoon is an occasion in itself. After the

hubbub and excitement – and let’s face it,

stress – that comes with getting married, the

honeymoon gives couples the chance to relax

and unwind. It’s a way of celebrating their

marriage and spending some quality time

together. It’s also an expression of personality.

Some couples choose to relax on a luxury cruise;

others opt for an action-packed sightseeing

adventure. Some will take the opportunity

to take their honeymoon back home, where

perhaps they haven’t been able to visit before.

Whether you’re planning on heading for the

sunny climes of Southern Europe or want to go

further afield, planning your honeymoon isn’t

always a particularly straightforward experience.

There are many things to consider, from where to

go, to how long for, to what

to take with you. Whereas

in the past, though, the

biggest qualm may have

been how many saris to

pack, today’s brides have

bigger concerns to face.

From threatened airport

strikes, to the devastation

of tsunami-torn Japan, and

the uprisings in the Middle

East, it seems now might not

be the easiest time to plan your dream getaway.

All honeymoons require meticulous planning,

and with the various country-to-country stresses

of recent weeks, what’s a bride to do? With

tumultuous world events taking centre stage in

news reports, and 2011 predicted to be hailed as

a key year in the development of human history,

arguably there are no longer any completely

worry-free holiday destinations, but with a bit

of knowledge and awareness of the situation,

you’re able to make an informed decision about

what to do for this very special holiday.

If your heart’s set on a once-in-a-lifetime

holiday abroad, it’s important to be aware

of any political unrest, threats from

terrorism or planned disturbances

in your destination of choice. The

Foreign Office website www.fco.gov.

uk provides up-to-date country-by-

country travel advice and information,

and it’s vital that you check this before

making any travel arrangements.

Hot Honeymoon Destination 2011

Turkey is a dynamic place with lots

to offer tourists, from ancient cities to

bazaars, to the iconic Blue Mosque of

Istanbul. The country’s beach resorts

have long been a favourite with bikini-

clad Europeans, but they are now also

enjoying a boost in Islamic tourism, with

a number of hotels and resorts tailoring

their services to meet the needs of

Muslim visitors, from prayer rooms to

segregated pools. This contrast and

merge of cultures provides just one

example of why Turkey is worth a

visit. Those looking for the ultimate

in romantic getaways will not be

disappointed. From breathtaking

Istanbul, with Ottoman minarets lacing

its skyline, to the picturesque, romantic

island of Bozcaada, Turkey is the

stuff dreams are made of, and offers

something to delight and please any

honeymooning couple. It is, however,

important to remember that there is

a high threat of terrorism throughout

the country and that terrorist groups

target both cities and resorts. Couples

travelling to Turkey for their honeymoon

should remain vigilant and follow the

advice issued by the Foreign Office. For

more information on taking a holiday in

Turkey, visit www.tourismturkey.org.

Popular but Problematic?

Whilst Egypt has become an extremely

popular destination in recent years,

with visitors not only flocking to the

Whether it’s a romantic sunset or snow-capped mountains that float your boat, your honeymoon has to be perfect. Writer Katie McQuater investigates where to go for that holiday of a lifetime, the one you'll look back on with a smile.

Pyramids of Giza, but also enjoying Nile cruises

and the beautiful beaches of the Red Sea Riviera,

recent political events mean tourist numbers

have plummeted. The recent period of mass

demonstrations, unrest and government brutality

has considerably affected tourism. Since the

situation has become more stable, it’s now likely

that after a period of recovery, the industry will

get back on track. However, that’s probably

little consolation to the thousands of tourists

affected by the unrest in February. UK Foreign

Office advice states that Luxor, Aswan, and the

Red Sea resorts are calm, but that the situation

across the country may change very quickly.

Visitors are advised to seek advice from their tour

operators. For Egypt tourist information, visit www.

experienceegypt.com.

Government advice is the same for Tunisia,

another popular tourist destination which

underwent a bout of political unrest earlier this

year. Since the warnings against travel were

lifted at the start of February, tourists are being

advised to avoid areas where protests and

demonstrations are taking place. Although

foreigners are not likely to be targeted in either

Tunisia or Egypt, there is a risk of incidental

violence if tourists become caught up in

demonstrations. You can find up-to-date info on

the changing situation in Tunisia and Egypt on the

Travel section of the Foreign Office website.

Hassle-Free Holidays at Home

As it’s no longer a given that you can guarantee

a stress-free honeymoon abroad, and with many

couples financially strapped due to the economic

recession, people are looking at cheaper, easier

alternatives to the traditional two-weeks-in-the-

sun of days gone by. The staycation, the humble

sister of the holiday abroad, is increasingly looking

like a more viable, and enjoyable, option for

many newlyweds. A staycation is a holiday spent

in the local vicinity, and what started with a frugal

few who couldn’t afford a trip abroad is now a

realistic and desirable option for many people,

including newlyweds.

Staying in Britain for your honeymoon is no excuse

to be boring, though. Why not use a staycation

to explore the hidden gems of the country you

live in? From breathtaking natural beauty to

dynamic visitor attractions, and traditional stone

bothys to five-star luxury hotels, Scotland has

something for everyone. Enjoy a romantic spa

break with your loved one at Loch Lomond, or

take a trip to the Highlands and enjoy stunning

scenery, visit centuries-old castles and snuggle up

in front of a log fire. What could be more relaxing

and romantic than that? For more information

on planning a romantic holiday in Scotland, visit

www.visitscotland.com.

Stay Informed, Stay Safe

So if you do choose to travel abroad for your

honeymoon, whether you choose a holiday full

of excitement and adventure, or relaxation and

romance, be sure to keep up-to-date with the

latest travel information. Keep in touch with your

airline or tour operator, and make sure to have

relevant phone numbers and documents to

hand in case of emergency. Key advice from the

Foreign Office’s Know Before you Go campaign is

as follows:

• get adequate travel insurance

• check the FCO’s country travel advice

• research your destination – know the local

laws and customs

• visit your GP as soon as possible before

travelling

• check your passport is in good condition and

valid and you have all necessary visas

• make copies of important travel documents

and/or store them online using a secure data

storage site

• tell someone where you are going and leave

emergency contact details with them

• take enough money and have access to

emergency funds

WHAT’S

Chunky FootwearGood news, ladies – the wedge heel is back. Don’t ask us how, but it’s more comfortable than other heels such as stilettos, and there’s something in its chunky shape that appeals to the casual nature of this season’s style. Wedge heels are great for holidays abroad as they complement 70s-inspired maxi dresses perfectly.

Bold BrightsSummer is the time to experiment with colour if you fancy something a little different to pep up your look. For lips that pop, try a bright colour you wouldn’t normally go for. Reds are the obvious choice, but London Fashion Week saw a multitude of vivid tones, from orange to magenta. To maximise the impact, opt for matte colour, keep the rest of your make-up natural and leave the smoky eyes for another day. Too much is overkill!

If you want to inject some visual stimulation into your look, but you aren’t quite brave enough to go for bright lips, try nails instead. Experiment with brights and see what suits your skin tone.

Cake LifestyleWith cupcakes being the current foodie trend for young women, and many cafes now offering a traditional afternoon tea, complete with three-tier cake stand, could this be a return to more traditional feminine pursuits? If you fancy holding a little get-together for your bridesmaids before the wedding, to thank them for their help, afternoon tea is a lovely treat. We recommend Cup on Byres Road, and The Butterfly and The Pig Tearooms on Bath Street.

Getting Fit and Having FunZumba, the Latin-inspired aerobic class, has been sweeping the country due to its pumping tunes and energetic routines. If you fancy getting fit and healthy for your big day, Zumba is a fun and relaxed way to get those juices going. Traditional South American music combines with recent chart hits to create a workout even the most exercise-shy will enjoy! To find your nearest class, visit www.zumba.com.

Satchel SavvyWomen everywhere understand that the right handbag can instantly transform an outfit from drab to stylish. Ladies, step into 2011 with a satchel handbag. Its uncomplicated lines and clean shape means it suits any trend or style. The satchel’s simple, professional shape lends itself well to office wear, but it comes in a variety of styles and colours to update and brighten any outfit. The range of colours means that the satchel will see you through 2011, from pastel hues for summer to dark leather for autumn and winter.

Changing Wedding FashionsMany Asian brides are now moving towards more Western styles for their wedding. There has been a move from the traditional red lengha towards dresses of varying colours. Many brides are now opting for lighter cream dresses adorned with coloured stones. In many cases purples, pinks and oranges are replacing the traditional red as brides move towards something more contemporary. In terms of jewellery, more and more women are opting for lighter, crystal jewellery instead of the traditional heavy gold sets.

HOTCropped ChicAs a smarter, yet still casual alternative to jeans, look no further than a pair of this season’s chinos. Whether you opt for Riviera-chic in sailor navy, or Parisian-glam hues of light brown; team them with a skinny leather belt and nude flats for a look that combines sophistication and fun. Check out the high street for the various colours and styles available. Alternatively, roll up your jeans, for a look that says ‘beach-wandering goddess’ (even if you’re actually in Braehead).

Retro Romance

Our recent propensity

towards vintage glamour has

manifested itself in the red

lips and the lace fabrics of

this season. For easy daytime

glamour, bring retro looks

up-to-date by combining a

casual-chic wardrobe with

high-glamour beauty.

Lush LaceLace is taking pride of place in the trends for S/S 2011, with pretty pastel brights updating the darker, Gothic style of A/W 2010. Wear with chinos for a funky, daytime look or dress it up for evenings with a pair of sexy wedge heels for a straight-off-the-catwalk vibe. Light, dusky pink is a key shade this year, and, as it’s not too out-there, is a good way of introducing lace to your wardrobe.

1950s HairHair is seeing a return to the golden age in 2011. After the success and popularity of 1950s-inspired TV show Mad Men, and the return of such vintage pursuits as afternoon tea parties and thrift, 50s hairstyles are being seen on everyone from Katy Perry to Reese Witherspoon. Think glossy, thick waves and flicks. To create maximum volume, use a volumising mousse whilst hair is still damp, and then dry with a round brush. Alternatively, do as your grandmothers did and go for rollers. For a more contemporary look, those with longer locks can create flicks at the end of the hair only. If nothing else, imagine this look as a tribute to the recently departed Elizabeth Taylor, who represented the ultimate in feminine glamour with her chic waves. If you’re having a white wedding, a birdcage veil creates a vintage vibe, adding a touch of glamour to the proceedings.

Thinking About CharityNowadays, many people are getting married at a later age and so do not necessarily need the traditional bridal gifts of home ware, money etc of days gone by. Wedding guests still want to give something, so why not ask them to donate money to charity, in lieu of a gift? You may also want to support a charity on the wedding day itself. The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice, whose work supports people with life-limiting illnesses, has a number of options for charitable donation, tailored to your individual needs. Their thistle pin badges are presented as bookmarks, place cards or tent cards, and provide lovely Scottish themed favours for your guests. They cost £1.50 each. You can also

support the Hospice by giving your guests the chance to win one of sixteen guaranteed prizes with a Hospice lottery ticket. For further information please visit http://www.ppwh.org.uk/fundraising/wedding-favours.html.

The pretty headscarves adorned

by Muslim women all over the world

capture classiness, modesty and

elegance. The traditional Islamic hijab

which covers a woman’s hair and neck

is distinguished by beautiful materials

and striking shades of colour and

ultimately serves an important, religious

purpose.

Experimenting with the dress code is

evolving. Indeed, over the last few

years, a growing number of hijabi

fashion blogs have popped up all over

the web, going hand in hand with the

substantial growth of Islamic fashion

labels catering especially for young

Muslim women wishing to adapt their

wardrobe.

The popular blogs and websites

springing up through the online

community promote faith-friendly

couture and offer fashion advice and

tips to the modern, modest woman.

Young Muslimahs with a fervour for

fashion offer their own savvy advice on

ways in which others can express their

individual personalities with flashes of

colour, beautiful patterns and unique

accessories without compromising their

modesty.

Online shopping has equally evolved

– a quick and simple method to shop

at home and receive items directly

to your doorstep. No hassle. With

clothing imports available from all over

the world, young Muslimahs can sit in

the comfort of their own home whilst

browsing unique hijabs that would

otherwise be impossible to find in stores

around their local area.

As a result, these beautiful yet humble

hijabs can sparkle with sequins,

contrast colours or fold with fabulous

fabric, making any attire pop by fusing

fashion with faith. With so many styles,

materials and designs to interpret,

there is a huge variety of headscarves,

not to mention countless ways to wrap

and style them. From simple wrapping

techniques for use in daily life to the

downright complicated for more

special occasions, wrapping a hijab

can become an art form. Practice

Easy...Amira hijab

The Amira Hijab is so simple to wear. Requiring no pins to secure it to your head whatsoever because it’s already sewn to cover the head and neck, it’s a wonderfully simple slip-on style. Basically, it is a tube-like shape with a hole at each end for your head and shoulders, no fuss. They also come in a vast variety of colours so you can coordinate with your favourite outfits too. It’s the perfect daily hijab with no faff, combining tradition with practicality.

Not so simple...Shayla hijab

The Shayla style is another hugely popular hijabi trend. Consisting of a large rectangularor Pashmina scarf, this particular style is fairly easy to wrap. You will probably require an additional underscarf just to make sure nothing slips off!1. Take one corner of the scarf, and

pin it to an underscarf. 2. Wrap the side border around your

face and pin the otherside of it to the top of your head for more stability.

3. Toss what’s left of the scarf over your shoulder. You can choose how tight or loose you want to wear it and can choose a basic style or make it more complicated by adding in more material.

Tad more difficult...Kuwaiti hijab

The Kuwaiti style is essentially two different hijabs joined together. The first part of the Kuwaiti hijab is in the form of a tube that is simply worn over the head, modestly reaching right down to the shoulders. The second piece is a long hijab which is attached to the center first one.1. Place the first part of the hijab over

your head. 2. Twist the adjoining second piece

of the hijab around your head twice over the first piece.

3. Pin it securely in place.

These straightforward techniques are

just a tiny portion of wrapping styles

amongst the countless styles out there

for those adventurous lot wanting to

monopolise materials. If you really

want to get creative or have a special

occasion coming up then check out

some of the more unconventional

styles including the Spanish wrap, the

Arab wrap, the Turkish wrap and the

Camel Hump, to name but a few.

And remember ladies, don’t

underestimate the art of accessorizing.

Dressing up a simple hijab with a

pretty brooch or hair piece vamps up

your look instantly without the costs

or complicated, time-consuming

wrapping methods.

Dr. Rita’s Smile Clinic

Q. I suffer from really sensitive teeth.

Every time I drink cold drinks or eat ice-cream

I experience acute pain. Can anything be

done to stop this happening?

A. Sensitivity can happen to anyone and is

very common. Cold, sweet, and acidic drinks

can cause it.

The tooth is made up of the outside enamel

layer and a second layer called the dentine.

The enamel protects the dentine layer which

is the sensitive layer. When the enamel wears

down the dentine is exposed and this can be

sensitive when exposed to the above stimulus.

The wear of enamel can be caused by acidic

drinks which attack the enamel and wear

it down. This is called dental erosion. Gum

recession can shrink away with age or too

aggressive brushing and the roots of the tooth

become exposed making them more sensitive.

Grinding teeth due to stress or natural wear

and tear can also cause sensitivity. A broken

tooth or a filling can also be the root cause.

Treatment: Attending your dentist regularly

for check ups and informing them of the

problem is advised. The dentist will try to find

the cause of problem and then advise you of

what to do. In the meantime using toothpaste

designed for sensitive teeth can help. You

can also apply the toothpaste directly to the

sensitive areas like an ointment throughout the

day. Different sensitive toothpastes work for

different people. So get some samples from

your dentist to try.

Q. I have smelly breath! It’s very

embarrassing, please can you help?

A. Unpleasant smelling breath can be

caused by a number of factors: a build up of

bacteria and food between the teeth which

leads to the build up of tartar can cause

smelly breath; dehydration; gum disease or

dental decay; certain medications; illness;

smoking; dieting or fasting.

Treatment: regular visits to the dentist and

hygienist is recommended. Flossing between

your teeth and brushing twice a day is also

recommended. Mouthwashes and cleaning

your tongue using a tongue scraper has

helped many of my patients. Eating a healthy

diet of fresh fruit and vegetables and drinking

lots of fluids also helps. Chewing sugar-free

chewing gum increases the saliva flow in the

mouth; saliva is the mouths natural cleanser.

Reflux acid can also cause bad breath. It

is important to have this checked by your

GP and fully investigated and treated if

necessary. Medications can cause salivary

flow to decrease and can cause the bad

breath. It is advisable that you discuss this with

your GP and possible alternative medicine

can be prescribed. Your Dentist and GP can

prescribe artificial saliva which you can squirt

in your mouth throughout the day.
