I
was Yet Much in Life forEleanor Merron Cowper but She I
Kept Her Word to James Wallick
Middletown N Y Dec 4Details-of a suicide agreement that existedbetween Mrs Eleanor Merron Ccwper I
the playwright and actress who shot I
herself at the Hotel St Regis in NewYork on Friday and died Monday inthe Presbyterian hospital and James-H Wallick the actormanager whoshot and killed himself at the Com-mercial
¬
hotel in Middleton on May 1
became known today through the pub-lication
¬
of letters which Mrs Cow ¬
per wrote just before her deathFrom Mrs Cowpers statements in
various letters which are in the handsof her attorney Special County Judge-H B Royce of Middletowft it is evi-
dent¬
that Mrs Cowper and Mr Wal ¬
lick as long an a year ago contem-plated
¬
suicide and that both decided-to die in the same manner In oneletter Mrs Cowper says that she andJames H Wallick had often talkedover the matter of taking their livesand had agreed that each would do soWhile no definite time was setit wasagreed that should they come to feelthat the world had no further attrtc ¬
tions for them they would leave it atthe same time and in the same man ¬
nerIn April last while Mrs Cowper-and Mr Wallick were staying at theKing Edward hotel in New York MrWallick broached the subject of sui ¬
cide again His fortune gone andsuffering from illness he made up hismind that life had nothing for himMrs Cowpers financial affairs werealso in bad shape and while she hadenough to live on she felt that withthe death of Mr Wallick her closestfriend she could find no pleasure inlifeThe suicide agreement was madeand they were to take their lives onMay 1 1908 In order to avoid un ¬
pleasant notoriety it was decided thatMr Wallick should come to Middletown to do the deed and that MrsCowper should remove from the KingEdward hotel to the St Regis andthere take her life
In the last week of April Mr Wal ¬
lick bade Mrs Cowper farewell at theKing Edward hotel and came to Midclletown He shot himself in the righttemple in a bathroom in the Commer-cial
¬
hotel in this city on the morning-of May 1 Instead of taking her lifeat the same time as agreed Mrs Cow¬
per remained at the King Edwardand awaited the news of Mr Wallicks suicide deciding that she shouldpersonally attend to all the details ofhis burial and later take her own life
tShe was deeply affected when she re ¬
ceived the expected work that MrWalliek had carried out his part ofthe compact
Then Mrs Powper proceeded to puther affairs in shape for her deathShe postponed carrying out her partof the agreement from time to timehowever not from a reluctance or fearbut because she could not arrange titime for the act that would not inter-fere in some way with some onesplans In particular she did not wish-to interfere with any plans her at¬
torney Judge H B Royce had made-as she wished him to look after heraffairs and burial
She continued to postpone the eventbut made up her mind fully to do thedeed on the day after election Thenshe learned that Judge Royce wascontemplating a pleasure trip at thattime and again she postponed taking-her life
In one of the letters she left shesaid that she had not had any bigtime since July but that she cele ¬
brated the day after election as everygood patriot ought I have no grudgeagainst the world and intend to goin good health and spirits-
In the letter in which Mrs Cow ¬
per gave directions for her cremationshe stated definitely the sums thatshould be paid for her cremation an Iburial as follows Hearse 11 coach
7 ferriage 120 cremation 25
porters 3 casket 75 attendants6 Total 13220The last letter which Mrs Cowper
wrote just before she shot herself andwhich she sent to Judge Royce by spe ¬
cial delivery is one of the most re ¬
markable ever left by a suicide In itshe talks cheerfully of her death andavows her belief that there is no fu ¬
ture world-
