The Pakistan Society of Neurology organized a seminar on February 10, to commemorate the International Epilepsy Day. This year's theme was 'Epilepsy is more than seizures'. President Pakistan Society of Neurology, Professor

Arsalan Ahmad in his welcome address emphasized this year’s Epilepsy Day objectives of appropriate social legislation, access to treatment and care, increase in research funding and campaign to educate and end stigma of Epilepsy. This was followed by a talk by Dr. Qamar Zaman from Shifa International Hospital on 'Non Pharmacological Interventions in Epilepsy'. Dr. Zaman discussed the option of epilepsy surgery when medical treatment fails. He presented the indications and different types of Epilepsy surgeries and their

advantages and disadvantages. He also briefly described the ongoing research on new devices for epilepsy and then the ongoing dietary recommendations for epilepsy.Consultant Neurologist Fauji Foundation Hospital, Rawalpindi, Dr. Saira Iqbal in her talk started with giving the audience an overview of the meeting with the Federal Secretary Health. The audience were apprised that they have been tasked by the officials to come up with a paper suggesting practicable driving regulation for epileptics. She also reviewed the existing legislation regarding driving in people with epilepsy in Pakistan and other countries like China, India and Turkey, UK and USA. Consultant Neurologist, Quaid-e-Azam International Hospital,

Islamabad, Dr. Talha Vaqar reviewed the legislation for driving with epilepsy in the US state of Wisconsin as an example for a law currently in practice. He also brought to the forum three clinical cases to make the audience realize the necessity of formulating regulation and legislation which is in keeping with modern standards of epilepsy care. At the end of his talk there was a discussion session and a poll to get the Islamabad-Rawalpindi Neurology communities' opinion about what reasonable regulation may be suggested. The consensus was to discuss and present this issue at an even larger platform in the upcoming National Neurology Conference in March, 2018 so that a national consensus can be developed. The meeting was attended by Neurologists and Neurology Trainees from Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

Breast Cancer Support GroupBreast Cancer Support Group Activity was organized on February 17. The aim of the program is to develop an interactive forum by providing emotional support and motivation to breast cancer survivors. Eighteen breast cancer survivors and their families shared their experiences among themselves in the presence of Radiation Oncologist, Dr. Uzma Qasim; Dietitian, Saba Ehsan and Naila Afreen from Rehabilitation department. The session was interactive and participants appreciated the initiative to empower Breast Cancer Patients through Continues Breast Cancer Awareness and Education.

Joint VentureLab Services Department, Shifa Foundation has been continuously working to expand the outreach of quality lab diagnostic services across the country. Recently, joined hands with a healthcare service provider based in Multan. South Punjab Clinics (SPC) is a 60 bedded tertiary care hospital, managed by Prof. Dr. Zuber Shaheen and Dr. Alia Zuber, with 20 resident and visiting consultants in all major specialties. Shifa Labs and South Punjab Clinics have signed an agreement to extend the diagnostic testing services for SPC Lab. We congratulate the Team for this Joint Venture and wish a long way forward with this arrangement.

International Epilepsy Day

Allergy symptoms can make you feel uncomfortable: Allergy symptoms may include watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, a rash or hives, or more serious symptoms like trouble breathing and swelling in your mouth or throat.

Common symptoms of Pollen allergy: Coughing, wheezing (a whistling, squeaky sound when you breath), shortness of breath, rapid breathing, chest tightness.

Common allergic triggers of asthma: Pollen, dust mites, cockroaches, mold and pets, etc.

ADVICE: If you have the history of pollen allergy then you should start taking your medicines from mid of February till mid of April. It will protect you from severe allergy symptoms.

A breast cancer awareness symposium was organized at Khyber Girls Medical College, Peshawar via the collaboration between Shifa International Hospital, Islamabad and Public Health

Association, KPK/FATA. The symposium was attended by hundreds of medical/nursing students along with the faculty members from Khyber Girls Medical College and Khyber Medical University. DG Health Services, KPK Dr. Ayub Roz was the Chief Guest for the event and he endorsed the MOU signing between SIH & PHA to facilitate the subsidized Breast Cancer screening services at SIH for the people of Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa. Ex. DG Health Services, KPK, Dr. Shabina Raza was also present at the symposium along with President Public Health Association KPK, FATA Dr. Saima Abid who took the initiative to gather all the stake holders in order to organize this Breast Cancer Awareness Symposium. Director Surgical Services, SIH Dr. Arif Malik in his presentation stressed on the importance of the early screening/detection and various methods of Breast Cancer diagnosis while Consultant Oncologist, SIH Dr. Muhammad Farukh focused on the treatment methods of Breast Cancer via most advanced radiation oncology methods. Dean Khyber Girls Medical College Prof. Noor Wazir took oath from the students attending the symposium that they will share the Breast Cancer information packs distributed to them by SIH with the women in their family and surroundings to aware them about such a fatal disease. Dr. Imad Malik (Administrator Allied Health Services, SIH) was also among the event organizers.

Event was attended by the diplomatic community, civil society and senior management of leading hospitals in the twin cities. Dr. Arif Malik, Consultant Surgeon & Director Surgical Services was

invited as a Panelist. Dr. Arif talked about the breast cancer - symptoms, telltale signs and emphasized on early detection, breast examination and treatment options. He also highlighted some of the screening guidelines for high risk women.

Breast Cancer Awareness – Women Healthcare, under “Raabta” Serena Hotels

Shifa International Hospital (SIH) organized a tree plantation ceremony

to initiate the #TreesForLife campaign, which also coincides with the hospital's silver jubilee celebrations. Member Environment and Executive Director General of the Capital Development Authority's Training Academy, Mr. Sanaullah Aman inaugurated the campaign by planting a sapling at SIH with a pledge

for a greener Pakistan. A large number of staff members, managers, and medical students participated in the ceremony, pledging to plant more trees in the surrounding areas to further improve the environment. The speakers urged the need to promote the culture of environment friendliness through recycling and using biodegradable materials for use in routine life. Sanaullah appreciated SIH for spearheading public awareness activities. He highlighted the salient features of plantation campaign of CDA and reiterated the commitment to make Islamabad greener. Mr. Sanaullah also invited SIH to participate in tree plantation campaign of CDA. The Chief Executive Officer of SIH Dr. Manzoor H. Qazi appreciated the efforts of CDA to further improve ecological and environmental value of the capital city and presented a special souvenir to the chief guest.

The CME started with an overview of Shifa International Hospital titled, ‘ Mission of Healthcare with Compassion for All ’ by Director External Services and Executive Director Shifa Consulting Services Dr. Omer I. Hasan.The highlights of the CME were the presentations given by Consultant Maternal Medicine, Latifa Hospital, UAE, Dr. Taghrid Faek Elgergawi; Consultant Hematology & Oncology Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, SIH, Dr. Kamran Rashid and Consultant Hematology & Oncology, Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplant Unit, SIH, Dr. M. Ayaz Mir. The topics covered Iron Deficiency Anemia in Pregnancy, AML– State of the Art Management, and Bone Marrow/ Stem Cell Transplant Program at Shifa respectively.The event was attended by 60 doctors working in various Government and Private Medical facilities of UAE. Program attendees were given certificates with 2 CME Points from Dubai Health Authority (DHA). The program was followed by panel discussion, Q&A session and dinner.
