Experimental design ideas. My first project. Observing people steaming a wine glass, focusing on sound and touch as the main senses

Sound and touch were the most signicant senses that stood out when steaming a wine glass. Majority of

participantsparticipants could hear squeaking from wiping the rim of the glass. I have recorded this sound, with no image so that the sound stands out more. Particpants also noted on the smoothness of the glass. I have shown this using a mould of a glasses curvature and put a ribbon material over it. This is

a representation of the smoothness of the glass.LastlyLastly I observed the circular rotation that all participants seemed to use, this i showen through repetitive circular

shapes.

Steaming a Wine Glass

Findings

After my observations I discovered that there were particular trends between all ve participants in both their technique and feedback of senses. The rst was the circular motion they used when wiping the outside of the glass, all seemed to move and rotate in the same way. Another observation made was that all ve participants noted on the squeaking sound that comes from wiping the rim of the glass, as well as the smooth touch of the glass surface. Lastly all subjects

noted on the warmth and moisture from the steam.

Whilst observing subject one, I noticed obviousdifferencesdifferences between their technique and mine. First-ly he didn’t dip the rim of the lass into the water before steaming the outside of the wine glass. Therefore running the risk of things being left on the rim i.e. lipstick. The technique he used when wiping the outside of the glass is the same as my own, a cir-

cular motion.

In my observations of subject two, I noticed that they had the same technique as subject two.

Although what was interesting was the way in which she wiped the inside of the glass. First she would lean the base of the glass against her abdomen. Then pro-ceed to shuffle the cloth into the glass, then twisting

the glass to wipe.

Subject three had a different technique in terms of steaming the glass. He would use both hands to hold and twirl the glass above the steam, leaving the cloth on the bench. Subject three was the rst of the three participants who dipped the rim of the glass into the water. Although in doing so he didn’t dab

the glass on the cloth before steaming theoutside.outside. This meant that the water dripped down into the glass which means it takes longer to wipe as

you have to dry it also.

Subject four and three seemed to have the sametechniques.techniques. The only difference I noticed between the two was that subject four would hold the base of the wine glass when steaming and wiping, whereas subject three held the stem. The one thing subject four didn’t do that the rest of the subjects did was steam the bottom of the glass. I think the reason three and four used those odd techniques would be because they have never steamed the wine glass before.before. Therefore they have not made their own technique

of steaming a wine glass like I have.
