OBITUARIESDiane Rosen
Diane Burn Rosen, 82, a long-time Summit resident and head ofmany community organizations,died on Feb. 10.
Born in England, Mrs. Rosenmoved to the United States in thelate 1940s. She resided in Summit.Mrs. Rosen helped to shape manyof the Summit area's key institu-tions during her five decades in thearea. Over the years, she was chair-person or president of the SummitArea Red Cross, Temple Sinai ofSummit, the Summit Board ofRecreation, the Municipal YouthGuidance Council, the SummitYWCA, now called the Connectionfor Women and families, and vari-ous other organizations. She waschairperson of the Community Pro-grams Advisory Board and servedon the board of the Summit Histor-ical Society.
In 1987, Mrs. Rosen and herhusband of 57 years, William E.Rosen, were jointly named "Citi-zens of the Year" by the UnitedWay of Summit, New Providenceand Berkeley Heights. In 1973, shereceived the Joseph P. Hadleyaward for adult volunteer leader-ship in the YMCA and in 1979, shereceived the Summit Area YMCA'sStuart Reed Memorial Award fordistinguished service to youth. Mrs.Rosen taught swimming, lifesavingand adaptive aquatics for threedecades and retired while in her70s. She trained a large percentageof the area's lifeguards over the lastfour decades and the adaptiveaquatics program she led fordecades helped people with specialneeds gain strength and developconfidence and skills in and out ofthe water.
Mrs. Rosen received a master'sdegree in organic chemistry fromHarvard University, Cambridge,Mass., a master's degree in Chinesestudies from Seton Hall University,South Orange, and an undergradu-ate degree from Oklahoma StateUniversity. She worked with RikerLaboratories Inc., Los Angeles,Calif., and Ciba PharmaceuticalCo. Inc., and as a translator of sci-entific documents and technicalpapers for several decades fromGerman, French, Spanish andRussian. Mrs. Rosen also was aconversant in Chinese and Hebrewand was studying Arabic before herillness.
Also surviving are two daugh-ters, Deborah and Barbara; threesons, David, Richard and Andrew,and nine grandchildren.

side, Eucharistic minister at a Por-tuguese parish in Elizabeth, diedFeb. 9 at home.
Born in Lageosa do Mondego,Portugal, Mr. Almeida came toElizabeth in 1947 and moved toHillside in 1983. He was employed
as a boiler room fireman at ArcherDaniels Midland Co., Elizabeth, for34 years before retiring. Mr. Almei-da was a member of Our Lady ofFatima Church, Elizabeth, wherehe and his late wife, Aida, to whomhe was married 62 years ago in adouble wedding- ceremony with hisbrother, Edward, to Elizabeth, thebride's sister, were Eucharisticministers for 25 years. He also wasa member of the 50-Plus SeniorsClub of Our Lady of FatimaChurch, St. Anthony's Seniors andSt. Catherine Seniors Group, all inElizabeth.
Mr. Almeida had been an activemember and past president of thePortuguese Instructive Social Club,a member of the Portuguese Amer-ican Citizens Club and co-founderand supporter of the Amadeu Cor-reia Scholarship Foundation Inc.
Surviving are a son, Antonio C ;two daughters, Rosemarie Hiersand Suzette Hamilton; a brother,Edward; five grandchildren andtwo great-grandchildren.

ford died on Feb. 8.Born in Waterbury, Conn , Mrs.
Anderson resided in Cranford. Shegraduated from high school inWaterbury and was valedictorian ofher class. Mrs. Anderson was abookkeeper for Bristol Hospital inConnecticut for many years. Shealso was a member of the CalvaryLutheran Church, Cranford.
Surviving are a son, RaymondC; three grandchildren and fivegreat-grandch i 1 dren.

Daniel Beifcs,65, a lifelongresident ofHillside, died
Feb. 11 in Newark Beth Israel Med-ical Center.
Mr. Beifus was an assemblyman for Automatic Switch Co.,Florham Park, for 33 years andretired three years ago. He was alife member of the Vietnam Veter-ans of America.
Surviving are his mother, Eliza-beth Beifus, and a sister, FlorenceBeifus.

He served in the European The-ater. Mr. Brown was a mastermason. He was a member of Lodge229 of the Free and AcceptedMasons of Linden, the VFW, the•Jewish War Veterans and the Amer-ican Legion Post 0102 of Linden.
Surviving are a son, Lawrence;a daughter, Sharon Smith; a broth-er, Michael; four grandchildren andfive great-grandchildren.

the Vauxhall section of Union, diedon Feb. 5.
Bom in Trenton, Mrs. Burrisswas a resident of Vauxhall for 42years. She was a retired accountspayable representative for CelaneseResearch Co., Summit. Mrs. Bur-riss' church affiliation was theAfrican Methodist Episcopal ZionChurch.
Surviving are her mother, Mar-jorie M. Coursey; a daughter, theRev. Teresa Lynn Johnson-Rush-dan; two sons, Herman Johnson Jr.and William Vincent Johnson, andfour grandchildren.

Linden died Feb. 10 in TrinitasRegional Medical Center, Eliza-beth.
Mrs. Davis was employed by St.Elizabeth's Hospital, now TrinitasRegional Medical Center, as anurse's aide for seven years and bythe Linden Board of Education forseveral years. She was an activemember of Greater Mount MoriahBaptist Church, Linden.
Surviving are a daughter, LeticiaS. Davis, and four sisters, GladysDavis, Bertha Avant, Delores Judeand Diane Griffin.

Bom in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs.Kurz lived in Hillside since 1951.She owned and operated Danine'sPrinting Co., Hillside, for 20 yearsand retired in 1982. Mrs. Kurz alsowas a professional folk danceteacher until 1982.
