Born in England, Mrs. Rosen moved to the United States in the late 1940s. She resided in Summit. Mrs. Rosen helped to shape many of the Summit area's key institu- tions during her five decades in the area. Over the years, she was chair- person or president of the Summit Area Red Cross, Temple Sinai of Summit, the Summit Board of Recreation, the Municipal Youth Guidance Council, the Summit YWCA, now called the Connection for Women and families, and vari- ous other organizations. She was chairperson of the Community Pro- grams Advisory Board and served on the board of the Summit Histor- ical Society. In 1987, Mrs. Rosen and her husband of 57 years, William E. Rosen, were jointly named "Citi- zens of the Year" by the United Way of Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights. In 1973, she received the Joseph P. Hadley award for adult volunteer leader- ship in the YMCA and in 1979, she received the Summit Area YMCA's Stuart Reed Memorial Award for distinguished service to youth. Mrs. Rosen taught swimming, lifesaving and adaptive aquatics for three decades and retired while in her 70s. She trained a large percentage of the area's lifeguards over the last four decades and the adaptive aquatics program she led for decades helped people with special needs gain strength and develop confidence and skills in and out of the water. Mrs. Rosen received a master's degree in organic chemistry from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., a master's degree in Chinese studies from Seton Hall University, South Orange, and an undergradu- ate degree from Oklahoma State University. She worked with Riker Laboratories Inc., Los Angeles, Calif., and Ciba Pharmaceutical Co. Inc., and as a translator of sci- entific documents and technical papers for several decades from German, French, Spanish and Russian. Mrs. Rosen also was a conversant in Chinese and Hebrew and was studying Arabic before her illness. Also surviving are two daugh- ters, Deborah and Barbara; three sons, David, Richard and Andrew, and nine grandchildren. The Temple Sinai of Summit handled the arrangements. Antonio Almeida Antonio Almeida, 87, of Hill- side, Eucharistic minister at a Por- tuguese parish in Elizabeth, died Feb. 9 at home. Born in Lageosa do Mondego, Portugal, Mr. Almeida came to Elizabeth in 1947 and moved to Hillside in 1983. He was employed as a boiler room fireman at Archer Daniels Midland Co., Elizabeth, for 34 years before retiring. Mr. Almei- da was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Elizabeth, where he and his late wife, Aida, to whom he was married 62 years ago in a double wedding- ceremony with his brother, Edward, to Elizabeth, the bride's sister, were Eucharistic ministers for 25 years. He also was a member of the 50-Plus Seniors Club of Our Lady of Fatima Church, St. Anthony's Seniors and St. Catherine Seniors Group, all in Elizabeth. Mr. Almeida had been an active member and past president of the Portuguese Instructive Social Club, a member of the Portuguese Amer- ican Citizens Club and co-founder and supporter of the Amadeu Cor- reia Scholarship Foundation Inc. Surviving are a son, Antonio C; two daughters, Rosemarie Hiers and Suzette Hamilton; a brother, Edward; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The August F. Schmidt Memor- ial Funeral Home, Elizabeth, han- dled the arrangements. Eva Anderson Eva P. Anderson, 96, of Cran- ford died on Feb. 8. Born in Waterbury, Conn , Mrs. Anderson resided in Cranford. She graduated from high school in Waterbury and was valedictorian of her class. Mrs. Anderson was a bookkeeper for Bristol Hospital in Connecticut for many years. She also was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church, Cranford. Surviving are a son, Raymond C; three grandchildren and five great-grandch i 1 dren. The McCracken Funeral Home, Union, handled the arrangemei ts. Charles Beifus Charles Daniel Beifcs, 65, a lifelong resident of Hillside, died Feb. 11 in Newark Beth Israel Med- ical Center. Mr. Beifus was an assembly man for Automatic Switch Co., Florham Park, for 33 years and retired three years ago. He was a life member of the Vietnam Veter- ans of America. Robert 89, of died 9 in Wood was the owner and operator of Sandford Equipment Co., a com- mercial laundry equipment distrib- utor in Newark for many years and retired in the 1980s. Mr. Brown was an Army veteran of World War II. He served in the European The- ater. Mr. Brown was a master mason. He was a member of Lodge 229 of the Free and Accepted Masons of Linden, the VFW, the •Jewish War Veterans and the Amer- ican Legion Post 0102 of Linden. Harryette Burriss Harryette Yvonne Burriss, 71, of the Vauxhall section of Union, died on Feb. 5. Bom in Trenton, Mrs. Burriss was a resident of Vauxhall for 42 years. She was a retired accounts payable representative for Celanese Research Co., Summit. Mrs. Bur- riss' church affiliation was the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Surviving are her mother, Mar- jorie M. Coursey; a daughter, the Rev. Teresa Lynn Johnson-Rush- dan; two sons, Herman Johnson Jr. and William Vincent Johnson, and four grandchildren. Mrs. Davis was employed by St. Elizabeth's Hospital, now Trinitas Regional Medical Center, as a nurse's aide for seven years and by the Linden Board of Education for several years. She was an active member of Greater Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Linden. Surviving are a daughter, Leticia S. Davis, and four sisters, Gladys Davis, Bertha Avant, Delores Jude and Diane Griffin.
