She was a native of Estill County, born May 11, 1937, a daughter of the late Elvie and Artie Harris Sams. She was a retired employee of Carhartt and a member of the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. Mrs. Barnes was pre- ceded in death by her broth- ers, Bobby Jo, Johnny and Jimmy Sams; her sisters, Pauline Puckett, Imogene Williams and Wilma Billie Sams; and a grandchild, Ol- ivia Freeman. Survivors include her son, Buddy W. Barnes (Robin); her daughters, Paula Denise Elliott (Ricky) and Michele Renea Freeman (Ezra); her grandchildren, Shelby, Les- lie and Brandy; her great grandchildren, Blake, Kae- lynn, Ethan, Benton, Abby, Noah and Gabe; and her niece, Brenda Jarrell. She was born October 7, 1944, in Dayton, Ohio, a daughter of the late Pearl and Clara Barnes Tipton. Mrs. Ballard was a homemaker and a retired beautician. She was a member of the Irvine First Church of God and had lived in Estill County most of her life. Mrs. Ballard is survived by her husband of 46 years, John Wesley Ballard; a daughter, Ida Lynette Bal- lard, Estill County; a son, John Wesley Ballard II (Daphne), Powell Coun- ty; one granddaughter, Leighanna Clay Ballard; one sister, Louise McIntosh; three brothers: Melvin Tip- ton (Sis), Paul Edward Tip- ton (Rhonda) and Bradley Tipton (Sheila); and two sis- ters-in-law: Christine Tipton and Shirl Tipton. There was no time for flowery words or trite phrases. It was now or never: If God did not respond immediately, it would be all over for him. He was frightened! And because of the urgency of this situa- tion, there are different ways to describe his im- mediate need: “Hasten, Lord; Please God, come quickly; Please God, rescue me right now; Come quickly, Lord, and help me!” At the time David of- fered this prayer there were some who were trying to kill him, hu- miliate him, put him to shame and take delight in the problems he was facing. Some of his clos- est friends threatened to destroy him. He was dis- appointed. He felt empty and forsaken. Those whom he had trusted betrayed him and those whom he had helped turned against him. This happens to us all. David felt empty, bro- ken, alone and forgot- ten by everyone but his Lord. So, he did what he always did: he turned to God during a critical life-crisis begging for im- mediate assistance. He knew that God alone could and would help him, save him, sustain him and shield him from harm. We, too, do the same. But in the midst his cry for help, David did as he always did: he praised God. Tucked away in the middle of this “Arrow Prayer” David said, “May those who long for Your saving help always say, ‘The Lord is Great.’” What a wonderful les- son for each of us. Someone has called this Psalm (70) an “Ar-row Prayer.” David was in a life-threatening situ-ation and needed help. There was no time for flowery words or trite phrases. It was now or never: If God did not respond immediately, it would be all over for him. He was frightened! And because of the urgency of this situa-tion, there are different ways to describe his im-mediate need: “Hasten, Lord; Please God, come quickly; Please God, rescue me right now; Come quickly, Lord, and help me!” At the time David of-fered this prayer there were some who were trying to kill him, hu-miliate him, put him to shame and take delight in the problems he was

facing. Some of his clos-est friends threatened to destroy him. He was dis-appointed. He felt empty and forsaken. Those whom he had trusted betrayed him and those whom he had helped turned against him. This happens to us all. David felt empty, bro-ken, alone and forgot-ten by everyone but his Lord. So, he did what he always did: he turned to God during a critical life-crisis begging for im-mediate assistance. He knew that God alone could and would help him, save him, sustain him and shield him from harm. We, too, do the same. But in the midst his cry for help, David did as he always did: he praised God. Tucked away in the middle of this “Arrow Prayer” David said, “May those who long for Your saving help always say, ‘The Lord is Great.’” What a wonderful les-son for each of us. When we face moments of dis-tress let us never forget God’s greatness!
