It was a cold December morning, When they lowered him into the grave. Mama failed to be comforted; There was nothing we could say. There were nine of us children, And we could not do a thing. She kept on crying, And calling his name. She would say, “Oh God, please don’t take him. We have been together for so long. Forty-one years that I loved him, I can’t stand for him to be gone.” “Please God, let me keep him,” Moma cried as she finally left the grave. We children were so helpless; She heard not a word we had to say. As the days went by, after Daddy had gone, She would sit by the window at night; It seemed like she expected him to, Just walk the drive past the old farm light. Almost six years went by, and Mama cries no more. As she talked on the phone one early morn, Mama just dropped to the floor. Her life on earth was ended; And her children were so sad. But in our hearts we knew, She had just gone to be with Dad. Many years have gone by now, And yet I still wonder why; If I count to millions and millions, How many tears did Mama cry?
