Our first activity was swimming in a pool, which I love! Dianne brought my bumper and a tennis ball. I retrieved the bumper but grew tired of it and Dianne then threw the tennis ball. I jumped off the side of the pool and brought the ball back to Dianne many times. We had a rest and then we attended a camp intro- duction, outside on a grassy hill, where I met a lot of other dogs. In all, about 100 dogs were attending camp with me! There was a fabulous wine and snack fest with cheese and crackers, cookies and brownies, fruit and veggies, some of which Dianne shared with me. Then we played games. We played musical sits, using hoola hoops. The object was for me to sit inside the hoop every time the music stopped. I won the game and got a lovely prize: a large and delicious cookie! (continued on page 10) Summer Fun With Your Dog— Canine Camp Getaway! From the Editor— by Pam Coblyn, Editor, Obichaff

It’s Hard Getting Good!Success is when preparation meets opportunity—or Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Luck is that you are in the right place at the right time in order totake advantage of an opportunity. But you can influence the oddsand make your own luck by being prepared.

Knowing you don’t have to depend on sheer luck allows you to takeadvantage of more opportunities. From taking a relaxing loose-leash strollaround the neighborhood to entering the Utility ring, training the behaviorsyou want will give you the chance to relax and enjoy the experience.Ift’s time to target your weaknesses and work them out of your life.

Ask yourself, “Am I prepared enough?” Make sure you are being honest.Yours truly once spent a solid hour on a Friday night before an obediencetrial practicing dumbbell throws. Rubber matting can wreak havoc withbouncing bells so it was important to know that attention to detail hadbeen paid. I did the work and stepped into the ring knowing I could giveFenway the best possible tosses. He had been proofed over and over toretrieve the crazy bouncers but I wanted to give him the most accuratethrow I could as his team leader.

Our CDTC instructors are there to help you move forward. Become agood student by doing your homework (also known as training and prac-tice!) and accept constructive criticism. Sometimes this is a very hardpart of being a “good student” for a lot of people. Always remember thatyou are taking classes to LEARN and IMPROVE! Check your ego at thedoor and don’t be afraid to acknowledge your weaknesses. All you haveto do is ask! Our instructors and members are there to help, offer sugges-tions and guide you. This interaction is what makes our club great andour members successful.

Consistently good teams get that way because they work hard, sacrificeand pay attention to detail. All any of us can do is go out and do our best.Preparation allows that to happen. If you know in your heart that youhave done the work, anything can happen—including success!

We had a wonderful Annual AwardsNight and Instructor Appreciationdinner at the clubhouse on Tuesday,

Delegates Corner— by Joyce Dandridge, CDTC AKC Delegate

First, I would like to thank the member-ship for awarding me the 2015 CDTCAKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award

at the annual awards dinner. As mentioned atthe dinner, I have trained at the club for over25 years and have always found instructors/members to be friendly and helpful to me andmy dogs. For a long time, I could only train mydogs with little involvement due to a 24/7work schedule. However, I always said, thatwhen I could, I would give back to the clubthat supported me and my dogs and allowedus to accomplish titles in obedience and con-formation for so many years. As an instructorand Delegate for the club, I have tried to dothat.

As you may have heard, China is trying tomodify history of particular breeds of pure-bred dogs by removing “Tibetan” in some

breed names. I have been informed that at thelast AKC Board meeting, AKC wanted clubs toknow they will make no changes to breed his-torical references in its records unless there isa formal, documented and substantiated re-quest made by the applicable AKC ParentClub.

I received a notice from the AKC Pet Disas-ter Relief Task Force stating that 24 trailershave rolled out across the country. There arealso 11 more in the pipeline ready to roll and16 others that are actively fundraising. It wasgreat to see some members come to HowardCounty Fairgrounds on July 5 to see the trailerour club sponsored.

I have been notified by AKC Events Opera-tions Department that our event representativeis Elizabeth Fogleman. She will be in charge ofprocess and approval of all club event applica-tions and judges panels.

Finally, I received notification from the AKCin reference to the Board’s position to YulinDog Meat Festival held in China which has cre-ated outcries around the world. As you know,FCI has designated the World Dog Show to bein China in 2019. AKC believes these protestsare completely justified and imperative forthere to be any chance of eliminating institu-tionalized and heinous treatment, torture andconsumption of thousands of dogs each year.AKC urges China to implement educationalprograms to help end the barbarous practiceof torture and eating of dogs. AKC offers assis-tance in this effort in any way possible.

A Very Special Brag!Making A Difference—Making People Smile!Pat Wells and Rika joined other People Animals Love (PAL) dogs were invited to Dulles Airport over the July 4thweekend. The “de-stress” passengers and staff. Rika was quite the star as she rocked the United sun glasses allthree days. She got to visit the United Operations area and go on an empty airplane. She posed with passengersand staff and many people remarked at how well behaved she was. She even made some of the TSA people smile.United made a nice donation to PAL and also donated $1 for every posting to social media using #UnitedPaws.

Once again I have to thank all of the people that have helped make Rika the dog that she is. I could not have doneit without the training and support that I have received at the club.

Rika is helping to make a more peaceful world and bring smiles whereever she goes. Way to go, Rika!

Canine Camp Getaway!, continued from page 1I was allowed to go attend each meal in the dining

room as long as I behaved myself. At dinner, I lay underthe table and Dianne shared some of her flank steakwith me. The food was pretty good. There was achoice of three entrees, salad and dessert. Then wewent for a walk with two of my new friends. Theweather was lovely: a nice cool evening for June.

On Wednesday morning, Dianne and I had our firstagility class. It was outside and there were a lot of distractions. I wanted to try every obstacle but had towait for the instructor to tell me it was my turn. I triedthe Tunnel, Jumps, Tire, A-frame, Dogwalk and Chute—all on lead. It was fun!

We went back to the room for a rest and then wentswimming before lunch. I got to go to the dining roomagain for breakfast and lunch. I was being good so Icould get some of the yummy food Dianne had: eggs, sausage and bread. Lunch was a tuna sandwich andchips—Dianne shared the chips. After lunch, we had acamp photo taken: everyone was on the grassy hill; humans wore purple camp shirts. Then we went to aloose leash walking seminar. I had been pulling Diannedown the stairs from the day we got here. The instruc-tor taught Dianne how to use the leash and do somesmall pulls on the leash. It worked and I stoppedpulling—Dianne was so happy and proud of me. Thiswas a busy day because Rally instruction was before

dinner. Dianne helped the instructor set up the courseand I was the demo dog for the Novice course. When itwas time for me to do the Excellent course, I was takenoff lead. Everyone oohed and aahed. At lunch and din-ner, the camp director made announcements, and wehad a game of the day. Today’s game was to guess howmany treats there were in the cookie jar.

On Thursday morning, we went to our second Agilityclass and I tried the Teeter Totter and Table. Then we rana short course with the table, jump, dogwalk, twojumps and the Chute: this was awesome. Again, I got togo swimming and then onto lunch. Dianne decidedthat we were going to have a nice quiet time before thepool games as she knew I was going to be very excited.

I also jumpedoff the side ofthe pool and thegame was to seewho could jumpthe farthest; Iam no competi-tion for the bigdogs. After din-ner, we went fora walk with ournew friends.

Canine Camp Getaway!, continued from page 10

We attended Barks and Crafts where Dianne deco-rated a flower pot for Cara, her granddaughter, usingdog stickers, and put the seeds inside it that we got inthe camp goodie bag. The pool games included relayraces where two balls were thrown to two dogs; therewere about 10 dogs total. I made it to the finals wherea Lab beat me. Dianne was thrilled that I made it to thefinals!

Friday morning we drove into the town of LakeGeorge for a lovely walk by the lake and through thisscenic small town tucked into the Adirondack Moun-tains . Talk about a dog friendly place: there was a K9Station where they offered us food and drink and therewas a dog beach. We had a nice stroll and a profes-sional photographer took a picture of Dianne and I sit-ting on a bench.

When we got back to camp, we went to Agility class. This time we linked together the Aframe, jump, tunnel, jump, and tire. I was having a blast with this-no formalobedience. After lunch and a rest, we went swimming.

I noticed Dianne starting to pack up and putting thingsin the car; looks like we were leaving tomorrow. Din-ner and a walk finished off the day. Saturday morningwas the best day ever. We went to Agility and I got torun several short courses off lead!

We then headed out for a long drive. At dinner, I wasso tired that I fell asleep and was snoring loudly.

The camp also offered a camp store where humanand dog products were sold and a silent auction: eachattendee brought items and the monies collected weredonated to a charity. A professional photographer tookpictures of us participating in various activities.

By the end of the week, Dianne was very relaxed. There was no pressure to do anything formal. I made alot of friends, some of whom were obedience andagility dogs, and some of whom were just on vacationwith their owners. Some dogs were given rides instrollers and some were very athletic, some were pupsand some were as old as 17 years of age. All in all wehad a great time and Dianne and I bonded even more.

Editor’s Note: There are all sorts of dogcentric campswhere you can spend quality time with your belovedcompanion. From pure “just for fun” (like luckyBosco’s vacation) to competition obedience andagility, there is lots to choose from. Lots of options canbe found on the internet. Learn, have fun get awaywith your dog!

Once more Capital has been askedto put on the final demonstration onthe last day of the MontgomeryCounty Agricultural Fair in the largestpavilion on Saturday, August 22 at6:30 pm. This is B I G!We put on demonstrations of obe-

dience, rally, and agility. We havedogs at every level, and dogs thatjust “work the crowd”, as good am-bassadors. Whatever you can andwant to do is appreciated! As with any sport, dog performance

sports done absolutely perfectly, looks easy. We know that it is far from easy. To the very large crowd of spectators, theylike the “miscues” perhaps more than the flawless performances. So don’t worry that yourdog is still training—we are a training club). We need folks to assemble equipment to be taken out there, unload and set up, assist

with the performances, take down and haul away. And of course we need lots of teamsfrom our training programs—obedience, rally and agility and everything in between—toput on the performances and work the crowds. It is typically hot and humid. You will be working on sawdust that is probably full of ani-

mal poop and urine—it is the county fair—with a zillion folks all around and lots and lots ofnoises. But it is also the most satisfying thing that you might do with your dog—knowingthat you are presenting what we do at CDTC to the largest audience you might encounter. It is an incredible feeling to show the broader community what dogs (and even their ownpets) can do!“Many, many years ago, I was at the fair and saw this demonstration. I was so impressed that

dogs could do that, especially in that type of environment, under those conditions, that Iwanted to try to train that in my own dog, and here I am today,” says Burton Goldstein. So hold the date, Saturday, August 22!. The shows starts around 6 pm, but we need

a crew to get there earlier and help set up. We hear that the grilled cheese sandwichesand the “almost” homemade ice cream right next to where CDTC is set up are reasonsenough to attend!Shannon Hall will be the Mistress of Ceremonies for all the demos and entertain the

adoring crowds. We need club members to volunteer their dogs for tricks, obedience, rally and agility!

We could also use more therapy dogs and friendly dog teams. In addition to demo dogs, weneed help with setting up courses and help with hauling equipment to and from the Fair. The demo will start at 6:30 pm on Saturday, August 22. But, folks should be there ear-

lier to help set up and go hang out and enjoy the Fair! Please check your club emails forinformation about how to volunteer.
