“By referring to a group activity within the class for which you assumed a leadership role (or as you observed a leader), discuss and evaluate the management strategies for each of the functions of management as they were applied for your activity.

PStudents will be exposed to a balance of theoryand practical experiences in developing theirknowledge throughout the semester (we find“experience is the best teacher”)

PBased on a variety of resources including text; on-line study notes and working papers; casestudies from newspapers, web and video

PParticular areas of content include overview ofmanagement; planning & control; organizing as amanagement process; leadership in business andcurrent management issues

The theory portion of class:

PStudents participate in a variety of group activitiesas leaders and subordinates

PWhile in a leadership role, students practice withtheir developing management skills

PThere is much opportunity for self-reflection; peerreflection and teacher assessment of studentperformance

PTasks include developing new products & marketingplans; theme park operations; MP3 plant operationsand running a for profit classroom company

PThere are many “teachable moments” as studentschallenge themselves

PActivity: ROLLER COASTER TYCOON< Students “play” for a day and learn the basics< Then they PLAN their TWO parks, with Policies &

Procedures, in teams< Finally, they RUN their parks through “Four Years”

retail one particular DURABLE product< Must have BOH logo and be consistent in quality and

design< Sold through two lunch periods, with no down time!
