Te 1st Greek Brigade was ormed in Palestine in 1941. Tesoldiers that ormed this unit were escaped Greek militarypersonnel rom Greece and Crete, and volunteer Greekoverseas residents. Te brigade had a total strength o 4,500
with three inantry battalions, an artillery regiment, engineer
company and machine-gun company. In July 1942 the2nd Greek Brigade was ormed at Almiriya Camp in Egypt.
Te 1st Greek Brigade took part in the battle o El Alamein inOctober-November 1942 and ought well, but due to variouspolitical struggles and disruption throughout the Greek orcesin Mediterranean, the brigade was disbanded ater acommunist inspired mutiny in April 1944.
Te most reliable Greek soldiers were then ormed into the3rd Mountain Brigade under the command o ColonelTrassivoulos sakalotos. Te new ormation consisted othree inantry battalions, a regiment o eld artillery and
attached support troops, approximately 3000 men. Some othe Greeks were veterans rom Albania and El Alamein, butothers were yet to see action.
ItalyIn August 1944 the 3rd Greek Mountain Brigade was attachedto the 2nd New Zealand Division and the New Zealandcommander, General Freyberg, inspected them at aranto on
17 August and was impressed by the Greeks bearing. TeBrigade then joined the New Zealanders in an exercise toamiliarise the ocers with all-arms co-operation andcommunication.
By the September the brigade was positioned near the villageo Catalica, just south o the city o Rimini. On 8 and 10September the brigade was engaged by two strong Germanattacks. Te Greeks held their line and pushed the Germansback, and then launched a counterattack to take Rimini.
RImInITe Greeks were by then attached to the 1st Canadian Division, but could expect support rom their New Zealand riends
who were in reserve. o provide the Greeks some armouredsupport B squadron, 20th New Zealand Armoured Regiment

o the tanks the 22

with a Heavy Mortar company and a Machine-gun companysupporting. Te New Zealand 33 Anti-tank battery (17pdrs)
was positioned behind the Greeks or the attack.
Te attack began on 13 September with the Greeks attackingtwo small arm settlements on the Marano road. Te two

settlements (Mondaldini and Monticelli) were deended by1. Fallschirmjger Regimentand some Ostruppen described asurkomen (likely a urkestani Ostlegion battalion rom the162. Inanteriedivision). Te Germans were well prepared andheld o the Greeks.
Te ollowing day the New Zealand support was called up toaid the Greeks. 7 and 8 roop o the B Squadron, 20th ArmouredRegiment we assigned to the Greeks and took part in the
attack on Monaldini, while soon ater a platoon rom22nd Motor Battalion aided the attack on Monticelli with thesupport o 5 and 6 roops Shermans. By 2000 hours theMonaldini arm had been taken, with only light casualties.Te ocus then turned to Monticelli, where the Greeks andNew Zealanders once again attacked. Te German deenderscleared out o the position as soon as the attackers approachedand the arm was in Allied hands a short time later.
On 15 September the Greeks launched an assault on theRimini aireld. Te 1st Greek Battalion crossed the MaranoRiver (in truth a stream with only a gentle fow o water) at1000 hours, and immediately came under intense re rom
German positions around the aireld. Te Greeks halted tore-organise themselves or an attack. Te C Squadron,18th New Zealand Armoured Regiment replaced the20th Armoured Regiment in the line supporting the Greeks.
Air support was called in and Allied ghter/bombers attackedthe western side o the aireld, and the Greeks attacked shortlyaterwards.
Te 1st Battalion attacked the aireld itsel, the 2nd Battalionthen attacked up the Route 16 road and the 3 rd Battalionattacked the small village o Casalecchio. Te 1 st Battaliononce more ran into sti resistance rom the aireld deenders.Heavy re rom aireld inficted heavy casualties on the
advancing Greeks, however support rom the New Zealandtanks and inantry was better co-ordinated as one o the NewZealand ocers spoke Greek. Te tanks were able to re oneach house lining the south o the aireld to ensure they
werent occupied. As the Greeks and New Zealandersapproached the deensive positions the came under re rominantry, Panzerschrecks, sel-propelled guns, and emplacedPanther turrets. Te heavy re pinned the Greeks just short othe aireld. Meanwhile the tanks edged around a hedgerow toavoid the anti-tank re, but soon ound themselves at theoreront o the attack.
A German sel-propelled gun knocked out a Sherman, but the
New Zealanders continued orward and knocked out enemypositions with high-explosives and grenades, orcing theGermans withdraw rom their positions. Te crew o thePanther turret abandoned it during the night.
Te 2nd Battalion, on the right o the brigade, attacked up the

Route 16 road, but became separated rom their supportingNew Zealand tanks. Te Greeks were halted by mines andheavy deensive re rom the east side o the aireld andnearby houses.
Te 3rd Battalion attacked the village o Caselecchio on thelet fank, supported by New Zealand tanks and inantry. Telittle village stood on a crossroads with a ew houses and achurch. Te Greek inantry quickly cleared the houses, but
the Fallschirmjgerin the church proved harder to budge. Techurch was nally cleared when a combined attack by Greekand New Zealand inantry and tanks nally drove theparatroopers out. However heavy machine-gun and mortarre rom the aireld halted any urther advance.
Te ollowing day (16 September) the Greeks continued tomop up around the aireld, though they held most o theaireld, one Panther turret was still in operation. Te3rd Battalion advanced up the let through the hedges andditches beyond Caselecchio until they came level with the1st Battalion in the centre, their task was made dicult asthey had to occasionally clear mineelds and were under
constant re. Te 2nd Greek Battalion advanced up the rightfank o the aireld. Anti-tank re was lighter than theprevious day.
Te ollowing day the three battalions continued theiradvance. Several attempts were made to knock out theremaining Panther turret with aircrat and artillery, but itnally ell to one o the New Zealand Sherman tanks to workaround the fank o the turret. It red several anti-tank roundsinto the turret beore the crew were eventually persuaded toevacuate.
Once the aireld was taken the 3rd Greek Mountain Brigade
turned its attention towards Rimini itsel. On 18 Septemberthe 2nd and 3rd Battalions pushed on to Rimini, towards thecoastal suburbs o the town. Tey encountered heavy resistanceonce again rom the German Fallschirmjger, but with the aido New Zealand and Canadian support were nally able topush into the outskirts o the town on 21 September. Teypushed into Rimini rom the south, only to nd the cityabandoned by the Germans, who were orced to withdrawater the all o Fortunato.
RetuRnto GReeceShortly ater the all o Rimini the brigade was sent to Greece
to seize control o Athens and prevent the ELAS communistsrom taking control o the country ater to withdrawal o theGermans.
Ater ghting in the Greek Civil War the 3rd Greek Mountainbrigade went on to orm the basis o todays regular Greekarmy.
