An excerpt from Dr. Baker’s remarks to the Class of 2014

You have just spent the last 4 or 7 or for some of you 10 years at ESA, a school that says, “stay in the struggle,” or “it’s not if you fail, but how you respond to that failure that’s important,” or to quote another famous philosopher, “it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog that matters.” So, what does this ESA diploma really mean?

Well, I’ll tell you a little secret. Just like the other 3.2 million seniors who graduated this year, you will receive a diploma. And, while ours is particularly nice, it’s nothing more than a piece of paper that will eventually end up in a box in your parent’s attic. What is important about this day is that it marks your completion of the ESA Experience. That means something slightly different for each one of you, but in your time here, you have been part of a culture of excellence. This culture didn’t and doesn’t just happen accidentally. It is something that has to be built every day; it is the ESA bubble, and it requires intentionality, just as living a meaningful life requires intentionality.

• You’ve grown up in this bubble surrounded by passionate mentors who have nurtured and helped develop your curiosity about the world. What an advantage your parents have given you! Be worthy of your advantages.

• You’ve grown up in this bubble where the counter cultural lesson is taught that failure is an opportunity to grow. Don’t forget that lesson.

• You may have seen these statistics recently. In the United States, if your family income is greater than $90,000 per year, you have a 1 in 2 chance of obtaining a college degree by the time you’re 24. If your family income is between $60,000 - $90,000, you have a 1 in 4 chance. If your family income is less than $37,000, you have a 1 in 17 chance. These numbers should bother you unless you believe that intelligence and talent are distributed in the same way that wealth is. ESA was founded on the premise that we should offer this incredible educational opportunity to those who might not be able to afford it. You’ve grown up in this bubble of service to others. So, serve your fellow man, and give to the Tates-Tutwiler Endowment that supports this important mission of the school.

• Finally, you’ve grown up in this bubble where you are defined by your honor and integrity. Take that into the world and teach others by your actions.

As you commence and scatter to the wind, make for yourselves extraordinary lives. And bring the bubble. Now I know that Mr. Tutwiler would correct me and say take the bubble, but I’m way too enamored of the alliteration, so I’ll say, bring the bubble with you. Make the world a little more like this special place. Congratulations class of 2014.

From the Headmaster

“Bring the bubble with you.”

Headmaster’s Award Recipient Carla Dibbs (3rd from left)

Carla’s accomplishment in academics, athletics and service speak for them-selves: National Merit Scholarship Winner, AP Scholar with Distinction, Honor Council President, All-State Volleyball MVP and Louisiana Coaches’ Association Player of the Year. Yet, as Dr. Baker noted in presenting her with the award, “even when she seemed to be pulled in a million different directions, she brought a gentleness, humility, dignity, and calm to everything she did. She is forever helping people out, lifting them up, pulling the rest of us a little closer to meeting her high standards.” Carla will attend Columbia University, where she will play volleyball.

Elasha led the Girls’ Track Team to a State Runner-Up berth this spring with 1st place finishes in the Triple Jump and 400 Meter Dash, a 4th place finish in the Long Jump, and a 6th place finish in the 200 Meter Dash. A two-time All-State volleyball player, she was named to the All-State Track & Field team too. A high achiever in academics as well as athletics, Elasha also gave her time to Honor Council and to helping out friends and younger students. Elasha will attend Rhodes College where she will play volleyball and compete in track & field. She plans to pursue a career as an orthopaedic surgeon.

“My favorite thing about ESA is the connection with the teachers. It has been an unforgettable experience, a place where you value your education and your peers.”

Andrew Broussard, Headmaster’s Award Recipient

Dr. Baker calls Drew Broussard the heart of the Class of 2014. A student who makes teachers proud, he rises to every challenge, and never fails to ask how and why. But his greatest gift is in leadership. From class president to tennis player to volunteer, Drew is the person who makes the difference. “The world needs more people like Drew,” says Dr. Baker. “Individuals who do what is right because they know it is, who do not cut corners or compromise their integrity to find the easy way out, who accept responsi-bility for not only themselves but others.” Drew will be meeting challenges with a smile in the Honors Program at LSU.

Guneez Ibrahim, Bishop and Mrs. Henton Award and Senior Art Show Award Recipient

Guneez led ESA as president of the student body this year. Thoughtful, intellectual and kind, Guneez leads through honesty and caring. Dean of Students Lori Bush says, “Guneez chooses to always see the best in people and develops meaningful relationships.” Of her art, Senior Art Show juror Alicia Faciane remarked, “The graceful execution of each piece was the lure that pulled me in to find more.” Guneez will attend the University of Texas at Austin, where she plans to study Product Design.

“You are in control of your relationships with people. You can make them stronger. Teachers I have reached out to have reached back. Because ESA is a small community, you become best friends with all of your classmates. They become your family.”

ESA Supermom Margaret Broussard

Balance - Mark’s teachers and coaches say he exhibits it in everything he does. From basketball to music to Quiz Bowl to academics, he knows when to be serious and when to have fun. He works hard, takes risks and learns from his mistakes - all while helping his classmates and friends do their best too. Mark’s favorite thing about ESA is the athletics because team-mates share a connection in a way that embodies ESA. “As with clubs and other groups,” he says, “our athletics really show that ESA is like a team.” Mark plans to pursue a career in medicine or science.

“Students really get to choose how ESA functions. We’re are at the top and the bottom of the pyramid – both choosing what we want to do and choosing to obey, not being forced to do something by some-one else. ”

Lower School Awards

A dedicated and creative student, Maggie shines in the classroom and out through her leadership style. She’s the first to jump into projects, but makes sure to pull others along with her, including her teachers. She wrote a part for teacher Deb Cochran into a skit during the Wyoming trip, then gave Ms. Deb a pep talk to make sure she gave her best performance. At ESA since kindergarten, Maggie says the enrichment clusters are the best thing about the Lower School. Her favorite was the business cluster, where she helped to put together and sell a Boredom Buster kit with kinetic sand, dice and cards to keep students entertained in the summer. She’s look-ing forward to being outdoors and having more independence in Middle School. A short story writer, Maggie plans to write scripts for movies and plays.

“ESA is not like other schools - in a good way!”

Lower School Headmaster’s Award Recipient Maggie Shuffler

St. Barnabas Award recipient Arden Frantzen is the third member of her family (yes, they are all ESA students) to take first place in the annual Letters About Literature writing contest sponsored by the Louisiana Center for the Book of the State Library of Louisiana.

Tate with the Ornithology group

ESA’s fifth graders served as student researchers at the Teton Science School in Kelly, Wyoming this May. In ESA’s 7th year with the program, the students and teachers spent the week hiking, snow-shoe-ing and exploring the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystems. They tracked large ungulates wildlife, learned about radio telemetry, collected macro invertebrates, created an insect museum, identified 20+ species of birds, visited the historical museum, and learned about the meaning of stewardship through a willow planting project.

Tate Broussard, Ornithologist-in-Training Ornithology group member Tate Broussard discovered that, “there is more than one way nature has to protect itself against people and other things. Aspen trees have their natural sunscreen; sagebrush is bitter in case anyone would want to eat it.” One of the highlights of the trip: “when Ms. Claire came running into the cabin yelling, ‘There’s a moose outside of the cabin,’ and seeing everyone stream out. It was right there!” Tate hopes to be an inventor or a video game design-er. He likes art because “there are so many possibilities of what you can create. Origami is my personal favorite, but there are so many other things you can do.”

“I learned that I could be a lot more adventurous. When I originally decided to go on the trip, I wasn’t sure I wanted to but when I got there it was awesome.”

From Dr. Baker’s June 2014 Blog When we built the new Lower School campus, we needed an altar for chapel services. A few years ago, we replaced the wooden decking that ran alongside one of the original plantation buildings in Cade. The walkway was made of old, rough-cut 2 x 12 lumber. Mr. Carl Smith stored that wood and when I mentioned building an altar, he suggested we use the pieces he had saved. He asked Mr. Gaylon Deville to plane the wood and make it smooth. The planks turned out to be beautiful old Douglas fir. Lower School Head Anne Johnson suggested that I partner with the 4th grade for this project. The students were really excited. It would be a gift to the school that would be used for years, much like the altar at the Cade campus. They also wanted to keep it a secret, and present the altar to the school as part of their 4th grade year-end chapel. We asked Head of Maintenance Jason Mejias to bring the Cade altar to the Lafayette Campus, and we measured it and saw how it was constructed. Handcrafted by Owen Reamer, a USL English professor, the Cade altar has been used since the school was first opened. We were inspired by this original piece, and we set about to create a design, draw plans, and make supply lists. My neighbor, Serge Renoux, donated the use of his wood shop and he gave us an old cypress beam for the altar legs. Each of the students helped cut the wood for the altar, assemble it, sand it, and stain it.

“I feel like many more people were involved in this project, from Mr. Sidney Hebert who probably built the original walkway, to Mr. Reamer, to the thousands of people who walked across those boards over the last 35 years. I am so proud of our 4th grade students who are continuing the legacy of giving part of their lives to ESA. Without each person playing his/her part in this story, the altar would not have been built. It is beautiful without knowing anything about how it came to be, but to me, it is priceless.”

Thanks to everyone who volunteered, do-nated, attended, purchased and supported Spring Fling 2014. The event raised over $185,000 — much-needed funds that the Parent-Faculty Group donated to ESA to help us get closer to our Annual Fund goal, remodel the gym locker rooms and pur-chase two additional activity buses like the one shown at right, loaded up to take the volleyball team to state. We will now have two buses for each campus to make field trips, athletic events, academic competi-tions and service projects possible.

Thank you to Chair Debbie Burns and the team of volunteers who worked so hard to make our 9th Spring Fling a success!

ESA sixth graders get their feet wet with hands-on marine science at the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport, Mis-sissippi. During the two-day trip, they visit with scientists, get up close and personal with stingrays and sharks at the Institute, examine marine life in the local waters and even spend some time kayaking. With sixth graders coming to Cade from the ESA Lower School, Epiphany Day School in New Iberia and other area schools, the trip also helps to strengthen the friendships they’ve formed throughout the year.

ESA welcomes Pat Stokes as Chair of the Board of Trustees for 2014-2015. Pat and his wife Virginia are the parents of Anne-Marie ’15, and Leigh ’18. Owner of P.G.S. Investments, LLC, Pat served most recently as the Board’s Develop-ment Chair. “Virginia and I believe in the mission of the school as well as the unique learning environment fostered here,” says Pat. “ESA has been such a positive influence on our children. Our girls have attended ESA since the open-ing of the Lower School over nine years ago. To this day, I’m still amazed at the growth they’ve achieved academically, physically and spiritually.”

“ I am honored to serve as your Board Chair for the upcoming 2014-2015 school year. On behalf of the ESA Board of Trustees I would like to welcome back all of our ESA families. To all new students, parents and faculty, we are happy that you have joined our ESA community.”

“My favorite spot on campus is any shady place under the oaks. They remind me that I must make the most of the transitory path through this place.” - D.T.

Closing the Book on Two Extraordinary ESA Careers

This spring, Dr. David Tate and Mrs. Anne Tate officially re-tired from ESA after more than thirty years of teaching, coaching, counseling, directing, mentoring, building, digging, camping, trap-ping, laughing and sharing.

How do you say goodbye to the Tates? Most of us don’t remember an ESA without Dr. and Mrs. Tate — David and Anne — even those of us who knew her as Ms. Carradine.

Thankfully, they aren’t going far, and ESA alumni can look forward to their visits as they join Mr. Tutwiler in reaching out to ESA grads.

We invite you to be a part of a spe-cial project honoring the Tates. Dr. Paul Baker presented them with a beautiful wooden box crafted especially with them in mind. It holds a collection of farewell notes, cards, and emails.

There’s still time to add your own note. Please mail your cards and letters to the ESA Development Office, P.O. Box 380, Cade, LA 70519, or post a message on the ESA blog. Thank you, Anne and David, for giving your hearts and so much of your lives to ESA!
