Note from the CEO
To our Oakwood volunteers, A kind word is like a spring day. I think this Russian proverb aptly describes the impact of your service on our patients and staff. Your words and actions brighten patients’ lives. Your commitment to Oakwood helps us grow to be able to serve more people and larger communities. Your caring helps hope bloom. Oakwood’s mission is to provide excellence in care, healing and health to the individuals and communities we serve. This happens when all of us at Oakwood—physicians, employees and volunteers—work in concert to provide an exceptional experience for those who come through our doors. Thank you for all you do for our patients, families and communities. I appreciate your commitment to Oakwood.

2010 Health Care Advocacy Day
On March 24, Oakwood volunteers, staff and physicians participated in the MHA’s 2010 Health Care Advocacy Day in Lansing. Participants at this year’s event learned about public policy, in Lansing and Washington, how that policy is affecting Michigan hospitals and how the health care community can collectively work together to influence real change for hospitals, providers and patients.
The attendees also heard inspiring stories from LeAnn Thieman, author of Chicken Soup for the Caregiver’s Soul. Ms. Thieman shared her life experience – and that of other caregivers - to offer hope and inspiration to those individuals whose care and service, on behalf of others, helps make a difference in today’s world.
Featured are volunteers attending the 2010 Health Care Advocacy Day in Lansing. Standing, L-R, Roberta Phillips (OSMC), Terry Frazier (OAH), Phyllis Zakalowski (OAH), Gaye Mitchell-James (OHMC) and Ron Beeber (OHMC). Kneeling, L-R, Angie Belayneh (OHH) and John Bauer (OHH).
