Oakland Presbyterian Church
Oakland Presbyterian Church will be collecting school supplies for STARS throughout the month of June. STARS stands for “Supplies to Assist ouR Students.” STARS of West Orange County uses the donated school supplies to fill backpacks that are donated to all of our local area schools to be given to students in need. We hope you will assist us in supporting this wonderful local mission. Please consider donating items on the list provided below. Of course, monetary donations will be gratefully accepted. Please make checks out to Oakland Presbyterian Church and write “STARS” in the memo section. $50.00 will allow STARS to fill back‐packs for FIVE students. Donation boxes to collect supplies will be located in the Narthex and near the church office until June 26th. If you have any questions, please contact Margaret Kirwan at [email protected].

Everyone who is part of our church family is encouraged to attend one of the ten home meetings being planned by the R3 Capital Campaign Commit‐tee during the month of June. The purpose of the home meetings is to pro‐vide a small group setting in which we can hear more information about the campaign. These home meetings will also provide some folks with an oppor‐tunity to get acquainted with people they may not know. So please sign up to attend one of these gatherings! Members and friends will be asked to sign up before or after worship,
starting on May 29th. If you can’t get to worship on Sunday, you can call the church office to sign up for one of the meetings. From the Pastor The well‐known hymn by Johnson Oatman encourages us to “count our blessings, name them one by one; count our blessings, see what God has done.” The song invites us to do this when we are discouraged and
burdened with a load of care. Recently, I’ve been feeling very blessed, even as we have been challenged by some hardships and unfortunate happenings at our church, like the break‐down of our AC in the sanctuary and the deaths of some key members. But God is good and has provided us with so many blessings. Things like the CLC, which serves as a very good alternative to the sanctuary as a place to worship on a temporary basis, flexible members and staff who haven’t complained about the need to meet in the CLC, the presence of a medical doctor in worship when one of our members recently col‐lapsed while we were singing a hymn, the generous giving of our members that has put us in a good place in regard to our finances, and the many selfless mem‐bers who give so much of themselves to help our church serve the community. Yes, I’m feeling very blessed. And I hope you are, too! With warm regards, Pastor Bob

from the Digital Task Force, which is revamp‐ing our church website.

represent our church at the June meeting of Presbytery.
Reviewed the financial report shared by the
church Treasurer, Derek Blakeslee. Heard the report of the Property Committee
on major projects underway, including the flat roof, paving of the driveway, and AC sys‐tems.
Had prayer for several people at the close of
the meeting.

We have enjoyed a wonderful
school year at the Preschool! It is bittersweet to say goodbye to our dear friends for the summer, particularly those who are leaving us for kinder‐garten. The congregation is invited to join in celebrating our VPK gradu‐ates during our Graduation Ceremony on Wednesday, June 8th at 6:00 pm. Every year, the graduates put on a short musical performance and then receive their diplomas and a Bible from Pastor Bob. Please come support our VPK families as their children move on to kindergarten. We are very proud of our VPK graduates and the foundation they have received at Oakland Presbyterian Preschool. We hope they will continue to call Oakland Presbyte‐rian Church their home and return to us for fellowship and worship. We are very excited that many of our Preschool friends and previous graduates of our program will come back this summer to start our new Summer Shorts program on Tuesday, June 14th. Summer Shorts will run for five consecutive weeks, Tuesday through Thursday, with a new theme every week. We begin by Celebrating Dads! Happy Father’s Day to all of our dads ‐ have a great day! We still have a few openings left in our two‐year‐old, three‐year‐old, and VPK classrooms, but you must act fast! The new school year begins August 15th. Please share our great Preschool with your friends and families. It has been great fun to share our evening events at Panda Express, to sing for you during wor‐ship, and to have your valuable participation during our annual Yankee Candle fundraiser‐ to name just a few of our activities that incorporate the congregation. Thank you for your tremendous and enthusiastic support during this school year! Happy Summer! ‐Preschool Director, Laurie Templin

June 26 ‐ Gone with the Wind: Tomorrow is another day July 3 ‐ Frozen: Let it go! July 10 ‐ Forrest Gump: Life is like a box of chocolates If you haven’t seen these movies, we encourage you to view them before each message so that you have a better understanding of what our pastor will be going on and on about. *We will have a guest minister on June 12 and 19 while Pastor Bob takes some time off. Rev. Pam Masten will be filling in on these two Sundays.

We will not be meeting any other days. We will return to our regularly scheduled pro‐gramming in September. June 13: 10:00 am ‐ 11:30 am July 11: 10:00 am ‐ 11:30 am August 8: 10:00 am ‐ 11:30 am
UPDATE ON THE AIR CONDITIONING IN OUR SANCTUARY As you are all well aware, the air conditioning in the sanctuary is broken. The Property Committee is cur‐rently in the process of securing proposals for replacing the system. Please be aware that this is NOT an easy fix. The current AC room was built around the AC unit in 1971. There are logistical and current code issues that need to be addressed in addition to purchasing a new unit. So the scope of work AND the new equipment are being reviewed. This is going to cost the church somewhere between $20,000 ‐ $33,000. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we work to ensure that the right work is done at a fair price. In the grand scheme of things, spending an hour in a hot sanctuary really isn’t the worst thing that could happen to us. We are very lucky to have our CLC as a backup location for worship. Starting this week, June 5th, we will be moving BOTH worship services to the CLC. It may take some extra time to figure out Praise Team sound and location, but we are confident that everyone can be flexible and work together to make it happen. As soon as we have additional updates, we will pass information along to the congregation through Face‐book and our weekly news emails.
Through the generosity of some of our members, we are able to offer a needs‐based and merit‐based scholarship to local graduating high school seniors. This year, two winners were selected out of a pool of about 12 applicants. Con‐gratulations to Alex Torelli‐Diljohn, who graduated from East Ridge High School and to Betty Maxi, who graduated from West Orange High School. Both of these students will be attending the University of South Florida and studying biomedical sciences. We are very proud to be able to offer these students full scholarships!

I believe that what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd moments, when they aren’t trying to teach us. We are formed by
little scraps of wisdom. - Umberto Eco
