Why We TeachWhy teach the Humanities in Prison?OPHP brings benefits to everyone who participates in our programming.

For Participants: Our courses create a venue for the exploration of individual potential. Participants take up the challenge of engaging with new texts and concepts. Class discussions and reading and writing assignments improve communication and literacy skills that prove crucial for successful reentry into the work force upon release.

Our instructors: The regulations and unique atmosphere of the prison setting challenge instructors to develop an engaging and flexible teaching style. In meeting these unique pedagogical needs, instructors strengthen and diversify their teaching skills. Our volunteers find their experiences at Oakhill to be invigorating, rewarding, and inspiring.

The greater community: Educational programs have been shown in a variety of settings to reduce rates of recidivism. Investments in prison education may contribute to a reduction in
