INSPIRATIONAL SUCCESS INSPIRATIONAL SUCCESS STORY AND LEADERS CAMPSTORY AND LEADERS CAMP
Last week OAS had the privilege to
host Jess Trengove, a dual marathon
Olympian, who spoke to our Year 7-
11 students about her journey as a
professional athlete.
Jess presented her successes and
how she had overcome barriers in
her career yet there was one section
that had an impact on my thinking.
This was where Jess discussed the
fact that the cameras don’t
broadcast the athletes who have
trained for years and lose or don’t
make it past the first heat.
From this she advised us all that we
had better enjoy the pathway to our
goals because otherwise we may
feel that our time has been wasted if
we are not successful.
I was also fortunate to visit our 2016
Student Leaders Camp and speak to
them about my leadership thus far
and how they can help the school
through their actions.
The students were attentive and keen
as we went through a model
Leadership Cycle and came away
with a plan to enact change within
the school.

SWEARING/PROFANITY/SWEARING/PROFANITY/OBSCENITYOBSCENITY Recently there has been many, daily
cases of Middle and Senior School
students either swearing at teachers
or swearing amongst their friendship
groups loud enough for others to hear
and be offended.
At times the students do not even
realise that what they said was rude
or offensive as they are words that
they seem to use so often they seem
immune to them.
Please discuss with your children
about the context of when they are
using certain words (intent, time and
place).
STUDENT FREE DAYSTUDENT FREE DAY

providing the current Year 12
students and the school staff with a

END OF YEAR RESULTS END OF YEAR RESULTS RELEASERELEASE The SACE Board has confirm that the
target date for the 2016 results
release is Tuesday 20 December,
from 8.30am. Students will be able to
view their SACE Results and SATAC
Tertiary Entrance Statement (if
eligible) in Students Online.
It is expected students will receive
official documentation in the post on
results release day.
ATTENDANCEATTENDANCE Attendance of senior school students
in Years 10 and 11 has dropped off
considerably this term.
Full attendance is required by all
enrolled students.
If your child is away, please contact
the school to let us know about their
absence.
Year 11 students still have three
weeks of school left after this week
and it is imperative they attend to
finish off all assessment tasks. If they
have finished set work in any class
they can all continue to work on their
Research Project tasks, so have no
excuse to not be at school studying.

SENIOR NEWSSENIOR NEWS
POSITIVE ED. NEWSPOSITIVE ED. NEWS
This term students have embarked on
a new unit of inquiry called POSITIVE
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
Positive Accomplishments looks at
developing student potential through
striving for and achieving meaningful
outcomes.
Throughout this unit students will learn
about mindsets and strategies on how
to develop a growth mindset.
Carol Dweck is a leading author/
researcher who specialises in mindsets
and her books are well worth a read.
To support a growth mindset in
children it is really important to
process praise, rather than personality
praise as well as encourage positive
self-talk.
I CAN’T DO IT…………
YET!
As a part of this unit we were
privileged to have Jessica Trengove
speak to our high school students in
regards to striving for your dreams and
what is actually possible with
dedication and persistence.
Jessica Trengove was an Australian
representative in ‘women’s marathon
running’ at London and Rio Olympic
Games and Glasgow Commonwealth
Games.
Currently she is working towards the
Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
Her presentation and life story was
very authentic and interesting.
Students found her easy to relate to
due to her age, country up-bringing,
achievements and happy disposition.
After the presentation Jessica allowed
questions and answers where students
asked an assortment of mature and
well thought out questions which
engaged and ignited students in
conversation.

SPORTS REPORTSPORTS REPORT
YEAR 5 TO 7 CRICKET YEAR 5 TO 7 CRICKET CARNIVALCARNIVAL On Friday 4 November, Oakbank
Area School participated in a Year 5
to 7 primary cricket carnival held on
Hahndorf Oval.
This carnival was coordinated by the
South Australian Cricket Association
(SACA) and all schools in the region
had the opportunity to be involved.
Other schools who participated
were Stirling East, Nairne, St Francis
and St Catherine’s.
There were two divisions on the day,
a girls only division and a boys/
mixed division.
Unfortunately, the teams were
unsuccessful on the day in terms of
winning, but they were both very
competitive. In the last round both
Oakbank teams played against
each other with Mr Wissell's team
narrowly defeating Ms Feijen's team.
Plans are well under way by SACA
to make the carnival bigger and
better in 2017, with more schools
being involved and a larger oval
area being utilised to fit more
pitches.
The students can be happy with their
performance as it was a long day on
their feet and not too many
complained.
A big thank you to Mary Feijen for
taking one of the teams on the day
and to our bus driver Jan Mattingly.
YR 10 GIRLS BASKETBALLYR 10 GIRLS BASKETBALL
On Tuesday 1 November, Oakbank
Area School played host to St
Francis College and Glossop High
School in a Year 10 girls Basketball
competition.
Oakbank Area School was
represented by Year 9 students Tiarn
Wegener and Tayla Graetz, Year 10
students Marlee Tonkin, Shai-Leigh
Tischer and Sarah Garvin and HCCS
Year 10 students Laila Williams and
Emmerson Bowen.
Oakbank played St Francis in a very
entertaining first game where the
lead changed many times over the
four quarters. Unfortunately St Francis
were leading at the end, winning by
2pts. Top scorers for this game were
Tiarn and Marlee.
St Francis then went on to defeat
Glossop by 7pts in the second
game meaning that they will now
progress to the finals in Adelaide.
Our game against Glossop was then
a dead rubber so to speak.
All girls can hold their heads up high
with the way they performed and
represented the school. They mixed
positively with the girls from the
other schools.
Better players for the day were
Emmerson, Laila, Marlee and Tiarn.
A big thank you to Year 10
student Kye Sinnott, for scoring
during the games and to external
umpire, Aaron Newman.
Cheers.
