Oak Grove Mission Statement
Our mission is to glorify God through worship, bring people to faithful
discipleship in Christ, equip them for ministry in the church and the
world, and grow in our love for one another through fellowship.
FROM YOUR PASTOR
We are now deep into the season of Lent. Our pulpit rotation
with Fulp and Pine Chapel is going well and the congregation is
hearing sermons on the theme Bread in the Wilderness. Thanks
to the various groups who have prepared Lenten suppers and for
all who have been faithful in attendance at the Lenten services.
We have had good worship services on Sunday mornings. I love
the hymns and music of the Lenten season. I enjoy praying the
Liturgy for Lent.
Our Ash Wednesday service was very meaningful as always and
we had the largest attendance this year.
During the month of March we will continue on our spiritual
journey with Jesus to the cross. We will draw closer to Him. We
will be in earnest preparation to get our hearts ready for the cel-
ebration of Easter.
The last week of this month will be Holy Week. It is the most sol-
emn week of the year for Christians. We will follow the footsteps
of Jesus during His last week on earth. We will begin with the
excitement and jubilation of Palm Sunday. We will follow Jesus
to the Temple and Mount of Olives, the Upper Room, the Garden
of Gethsemane, Pilate’s Judgment Hall, the cross, and the tomb.
We can’t fully appreciate the victory of Easter unless we first ex-
perience the pain and suffering of the cross. It is so important to
gather each night of Holy Week and recount the events of Jesus’
Passion. I encourage you to make the effort. I promise you will
be spiritually blessed.
And then we will gather on Easter Sunday to proclaim the resur-
rection of Jesus and stand in God’s Acre and say The Lord is risen.
The Lord is risen indeed. We will celebrate Christ’s victory over
sin and death. I’m looking forward to seeing you Holy Week and
Easter Sunday.
God bless and I’ll see you in church!

Newsletter Notes
From around the Southern Province Have you noticed all the construction buzz between the science build-ing and the refectory at Salem College? It’s a student center going up, the first new building on the campus since the fitness center, pool, and gym in 1982. The $6.8 million student center will include a café, student lounge, bookstore, multiple meeting rooms, and a 90-seat theater. Now that’s a far cry from Sr. Oesterlein caring for toddlers way back in 1772. With spring just around the corner, Grace will greet it fully prepared for next winter. Gone is the old, leaky sanctuary boiler. In its place is a new gas boiler that is more efficient and therefore cheaper to run. (You know the Trustees are looking forward to it paying for itself.) Looking forward to the 50th anniversary of its church building on Si-las Creek Parkway in 2014, Fairview has formed a Renovation Commit-tee to list projects and their costs. A first item is to make the sanctuary easier for wheelchair and walker access by replacing the heavy doors with larger, lighter ones. When the Roman Catholics’ Benedict XVI announced his retirement as pope on January 11, we Moravians could instantly say, “Well, that’s a first in 600 years.” That’s because we know the Council of Constance, which persuaded Gregory XII to retire (there were too many popes at the time). The same Council also condemned John Hus to be burned at the stake on July 6, 1415. Not all history gets properly filed away at Moravian Archives. For example, Mizpah is trying to track down answers to: Who built the rock wall out front and when? Where did the Primary Department’s wooden birthday cake come from? And where is the pulpit chair, last seen in 1975 when it was put in storage? The idea is to document the church’s history before it is filed away — in God’s Acre. Of all the fun- and fellowship-filled chicken pie suppers and bazaars last fall, we mention only a couple. The totals are in for the big one at Friedberg: 677 served, raising $14,158.45, almost all of which went to missions, outreach, and special funds — not to church improvement pro-jects. And Clemmons Women’s Fellowship reported a successful fall bazaar with a net of about $5,600, most of which also went to missions, outreach, and special funds — and to the building fund debt reduction. Meanwhile, the Clemmons Trustees learned the sanctuary boiler (1967) needed repair, and the office building windows, all 38 of them, need re-placing. For all the visitors to Salem, Home Church opens its sanctuary doors from 1:30 to 3:30 to learn who are the Moravians. Last year 8,121 visitors were counted, and they were from all over — 44 states, 22 countries, and 131 North Carolina cities and towns. And that is just those who signed the guest book.

More details to
come in March.
Jesus said, "In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world" (John 16:33). We may have a hard time putting the words "trials," "problems," and "God loves me" into one sentence, because they don't seem to go together. But let's take a look at God's end game.
Is it to make us happy in the temporal, or is it to make us holy in the eternal?
Is it to keep us always earthbound, or is it, in reality, to prepare us for heav-en?
The latter is the answer. So God can allow tragedy. No tragedy is good. But God can bring good despite a tragedy.
