BRYAN REGANMY NEIGHBORHOOD
WORDS: ANTHONY AFTERWIT | PHOTOS: BRYAN REGAN
Bryan’s first memory of photography was traveling across the country with his family taking photos with a Kodak 110 camera. He fondly remembers his Mother accidentally getting her finger half over the lens, blurring out portions of the shots. Lucky for us that Bryan continued his journeys with camera in hand albeit without his Mother’s thumb in shot.
Bryan Regan, a Raleigh resident and successful professional photographer, shoots a wide variety of commercial subjects however he keeps a continuous roll of personal projects that are simply stunning. Our favorite project is aptly titled “My Neighborhood”. We sat with Bryan to learn a little more about the open-ended operation.
“My old studio was on the West side of Raleigh and was condemned/interment domain by the TTA 10 years ago. I had 6 months to find a new place and I ended up on the East side of town. When I moved in 10 years ago I had 13 people living in the house next to me and they were all either doing drugs or selling drugs. I was out
of my element and I kind of enjoyed it. I started taking photo’s of them and giving them prints and the photo’s were really good. I was taking studio and editorial lighting out to the streets to photograph everyday people. Word got around and I started photographing lots of people. I’d shoot the photos and put the prints in the window when there were ready. I’d get extra prints made and leave them in the window of the studio. Now everyone wants to have there photo in the window. The neighborhood has really change in the past 10 years, Progress is moving East and the neighborhood has lost a lot of the rough edge it used to have. It’s been 10 years since I moved. My old studio is still standing and there is actually a photographer in my old space but I wouldn’t trade this spot for the old one.”
LIFE
Bryan is continually working on the “My Neighborhood” project as well as a still-life series “50 Shades of Food”. Keep up at: BryanReganPhotography.com, breganphoto.blogspot.comor on Instagram @bryanregan.

DALEKJAMES MARSHALL
INTERVIEW: SEANO
James Marshall, known in some circles as Dalek, has painted graffiti and showcased his modern contemporary artwork around the world. He’s decided to drop anchor and set up shop right here in the City of Oaks. We reached out to hear his thoughts on the art scene in Raleigh, the pivotal points in his career and what keeps him inspired. You are recognized across the world for your graffiti work. What was your bridge from painting graffiti to the contemporary approach to art?
“It was just a natural progression. The first element was probably just making canvases for friends. From there it grew into making for other friends and getting into some group shows. Its just kept evolving on its own from that point.”
Rarely have I seen an artist take a path that involved such a visual transformation. Can you talk a little bit about the pivotal points in your career that were catalysts to your aesthetic progression?
“I think any evolutionary points in life have to do with that inner voice. For me its always been those moments where I feel frustrated with being unchallenged. Now that’s usually the result of me reaching the limitations of my current skill-sets at the moment and then that
morphs into opening up to exploring other skill-sets, which in the end wrap back around into the others and you move forward. My desire is to keep learning and progressing at what I do so it makes sense for me to keep exploring ideas and seeing where it goes.”
What has been your impression of the arts and culture scene in Raleigh, NC?
“I couldn’t give you a full report on that seeing how I hide away working most of the time or I am traveling. I’ve been here almost 8 years now. Perhaps I’ve gained small windows in that time but overall what I’ve experienced has been positive. I think there are some great creative people in the Triangle. I think there are some great institutions and people to support it. I think it’s in its infancy when you look at it through the lens of what it can be which is why I’ve been trying to get on the war path for more public art, murals and so on. The potential in this area to do big things in the arts is there. The framework is there. The energy is right.
I feel Raleigh is a good place for me to be. I should probably just get out of the studio a little more often! I‘m happy we have CAM here. I think that’s a great facilitator for this area. Supporting them and helping them

grow will benefit all creative folks in this town immensely. NCMA has some potential and I like that new building but they have work to do! The Nasher is awesome. Downtown Raleigh needs more studio spaces and more connectivity in the gaps.”
If you could collaborate on a joint project with both a living artist as well as one who has passed, who would those two artists be and why?
“So many artists... hard to say. It would depend on what day of the week it was and what I was feeling like. I’d love to work with Walt Disney. He’s just one of those visionaries that crossed a lot of worlds. I don’t doubt it would be highly enlightening to work with him. As for living, it looks like Santiago Calatrava is still alive and I could learn some things from him structurally that would be helpful.”
What do you do to stay fired up and get inspired for new projects?
“I show up and start working. I enjoy process and what happens in that process. I don’t think to much about anything until I’m in the middle of it. Then it’ll tell you what it needs to do. If it’s feeling solid I’m inspired to keep pushing it. If it doesn’t I get pissed off. I figure it out and get back at it.”
What projects do you have coming up in the near future? What new things can we look forward to seeing from you?
“I really don’t know what I have coming up. I know I have to finish a few small paintings for group shows here and there. A couple little commission pieces. Usually people will email me to remind me I have something comingup and it may take a few times. As you’ve seen, I’m easily sidetracked.”

BBOY MICKY ROCKSRALEIGH TO VIETNAM
INTERVIEW: ANTHONY AFTERWIT | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNO
The birthplace of hip hop is openly known to be a housing project in the Bronx at the crossroads of Sedgwick and Cedar but for a young Micky Minh Tú the birthplace of his love for hip hop took place in a park deep in the heart of Saigon, Vietnam.
From the age of 15 Bboy Micky has been practicing his bboy skills while focusing intently on the fundamentals of footwork and toprock. “My first inspiration came from Bboy Imagine in Vietnam who was good with footwork. Hip hop was becoming very popular in Saigon and everyone was focused on spinning and gymnastic styles. Bboy Imagine was all about the fundamentals of breakdance
with footwork and toprock. I wanted to learn the right way so he became my first mentor however my biggest inspiration these days is definitely Bboy Born.”
Bboy Micky moved to Raleigh from Saigon in 2011 and immediately dove into the local breakdance scene. By leveraging social media and online forums he managed to forge relationships with people like Juan Matta, Bboy No-Sense, Bboy Kata and Bboy Exact who invited him to join the highly respected Raleigh Rockers crew while competing in and winning some battles across the East Coast.
His love of hip hop may begin with breakdance but it doesn’t end there. “I met a lot of the DJs, graffiti writers and rappers from Raleigh during the old House Party Classics events. Those were cool. Everyone was there from different parts of hip hop and everything came together. Raleigh is a cool place for hip hop.”
Nowadays Micky has teamed up with Bboy Napoleon to offer footwork and toprock workshops throughout Raleigh. At a mere 21 years of age, Bboy Micky is talking us to school!

GUILLERMO QUETZALCOATLAND HIS MUSICAL LENS
INTERVIEW: SEANO | PHOTOS: GUILLERMO QUETZALCOTL
Guillermo Quetzalcoatl is a photographic beast! Here at Oak City Hustle we see a lot of creative people come through the squad but nobody has hustled harder that Guillermo. Not only is his work ethic first rate but the quality of his work is unhinged. If that’s not enough, he’s a really nice guy. Oh great, now I’m blushing...
How old were you when you first picked up a camera and caught the photography bug?
“I was about 13 years old when I can recall my earliest memories with a camera coming from a trip to Mexico with my Dad and my uncle back in 1999. I remember having a camera and really “trying to take photographs” the best way any teenager could. Shortly after that trip, I developed the passion that would spark most of the important decisions of my life, playing the bass guitar. However, I would continue burning through rolls of film and spending countless hours in a darkroom with my first love of photography until I relocated from Chicago, IL, to Boston, MA, to attend Berklee College of Music.”

Which photographers do you consider to be an influence on your work?
“The biggest photographer I consider to be an influence to my work would be Todd Owyoung. He and his brother, Chris, create some truly inspiring work for bands, magazines, and big name clients. It wasn’t until after my wife bought me a DSLR as a wedding gift back in the summer of 2012 that I would photograph my first band in March, 2013 after not shooting with a SLR camera since about 2003. It was Todd’s work that really opened my eyes to what could be done and that would later marry my love of music to my passion of photography. After reading some of Todd’s articles and reviews, I took what I learned and ran with it from photographing local bands with less than 20 people in small bars to festivals with over 10,000 people! Also Ryan Hunter, who works for Guitar Center, consistently puts out beautiful work that I look forward to seeing month after month.”
What can we expect from you and your work in the future? Where can we see more of your photography?
“In the future I hope you all can get to see my versatility and development as photographer. 2014 has given me tremendous amounts of opportunities that have really helped me develop both in skill and confidence. I have my first wedding on the books for 2015 and I have recently started opening myself up for more portraits and freelance work. I have been hitting the streets of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill more frequently, in hopes to connect more and more with North Carolina and it’s diverse cultures and communities. Expect to see me out and about with my camera always looking to connect with the Triangle. Usually I can be found at any of the various coffee shops, record stores, or bars and breweries. My work can be found with the 2 Quarts Podcast, Resound Magazine, and this fine publication, Oak City Hustle Magazine. My website, www.guillermogqphoto.photoshelter.com is currently in a rebrand phase at the moment, but I can be contacted through various social media sites.”

THE UNIQUITIES OF LITTLE LEVIATHAN
WORDS: RICHARD LIVINGSTON | PHOTOS: SPCLGST
This place is an anachronism. By all appearances, it should be accompanying a traveling circus, trundling across dust bowl Kansas circa 1934. Posters across poor farming towns would announce, in bold playbill script:
THE LITTLE LEVIATHANEsteem’d & Unique
Medical Oddities&
Weird CuriositiesNever Before Seen by Eyes of Man
25 cents. Not for the faint.
Alas, The Little Leviathan missed its true calling by eighty years. Instead, you can find it in 2014 in a light industrial park nestled off Western Boulevard near the fairgrounds. But don’t judge a book by its cover. Indeed, that would seem safe advice when one walks into this museum and shop of the darkly bizarre.
If The Little Leviathan is a circus, then Sam Macabro is its barker, Rod Sterling (not the Twilight Zone guy) is the ringleader, and Miranda Almany is the lion tamer of sorts, telling Sam and Rod to “bite it,” but only when absolutely necessary.
Miranda, of the crayola-red hair, opens a dimly-lit glass case and carefully removes a figurine. It takes a moment to recognize the ball of fur she holds. It’s taxidermy gone very wrong. She cradles the rat, preserved for eternity with bat wings extending from its tiny shoulders. “I adore rogue taxidermy. I have the tattoo of a jackalope on my leg, but you can’t see it because of the stockings.”
I am keenly aware there are no fewer than ten skulls – human and animal – staring at owner Rod Sterling as he glides past display cases crammed with artifacts chronicling the harsh history of the medical practice. He points out a hand-crank surgical drill, then proudly uncovers an Edwardian-era dental chair, perhaps best described as ‘the seat of nightmares.’ He explains why I channel the agonizing memory of three years of advanced orthodontia into the black metal chair (it has stirrups, for crying out loud!). “Science is often shrouded and misunderstood. Naturally, we fear what we don’t understand and put it in a darker light.”
Manager Sam Macabro interjects. “If you’re looking to be scared, you will be. We just make the mysterious
LIFE ART
38
approachable. We take the fetish out of it.” He goes on to recall the woman who entered the lobby, swiftly scanned the displays of mummified heads and Kewpie dolls, made the sign of the cross, and pivoted to exit, ramming into the closed glass door.
The Little Leviathan maintains its strange inventory though a network of pickers, haunting estate sales and auctions for pickled reptiles, dusty medical textbooks and antique autopsy photographs. While foot traffic in The Little Leviathan spans the simply curious to die-hard hoarders, much of the shop’s business comes from professionals. “Doctors like this stuff,” explains Rod, wielding a century-old bone saw. “They’re often collectors of the equipment and instruments.”
“Most people laugh,” says Miranda when asked for first-time visitors’ most common response to the shop. That makes sense. Laughter is a natural response after adrenaline floods the body. After fear. Listen for it next time you’re on a roller coaster or after the shock in some scary movie. Or the giggles could result from the same titillation felt by some twelve-year-old prairie kid at that circus, past his bedtime, peeking under the tent at the traveling freak show.
“Science exists in nature.” Rod shrugs his shoulders, poised next to a framed diorama containing the corpse of a mouse, frozen in mid-pirouette and dressed as a flamenco dancer. “Yet there’s still mystery and wonder.”
39
The Little Leviathan sits, unassumingly, in the shadow of a broken concrete mountain at 212 Powell Drive in unit #126.

CARBONATED CULTURE:BROOD SODA
INTERVIEW: SABRINA GALLI
LIFE
Tim Burton’s Jack Skellington is Hollywood’s leading skeleton, but a new undead dude is making a name for himself in Durham. Rood Boy, the lovable, hoodie-wearing, day-of-the-dead caricature, is marking his territory in the craft soda business across the South and specifically in the Triangle area. Rood Boy’s the embodiment of Durham-based soda producer Brood. After being more than intrigued by this little fella, I sat down and talked with the company’s founder, Jon Lehman.
Previously a lawyer in Florida, Jon made the switch to brewer after his move to Durham. He told me, “Everything is very hobby oriented, it was not really done to create a business -- but I had everything in place and realized the carbonated beverage market is ready for a shot in the arm. So I gave it one. I stopped practicing law and started making a different soda.”
You said you did some soul searching when you moved to Durham. What advice would you have for someone in that same position?
“I’d bet that almost everyone makes a ‘pros and cons’ checklist of some sort when there’s a tough career choice. I’d also bet that almost everyone gives different weights to the several pro/con bullet points (whether they are conscious that they do is another question). Acknowledge that freedom and money are not the same value. Acknowledge that opportunity and security are very different criteria. For me, I was sure that the chance to build Brood would be immensely more gratifying than the benefits of the status quo. I felt it then, and I know it now.”
How do you feel about small businesses competing against larger corporations?
“It’s almost cliché to bash large corporations. I don’t. I respect them and, hell, I want Brood to be one. It’s the American dream. There are times when I wish we had the infrastructure, the bargaining clout, and the ubiquity but I don’t really mind. Instead, I embrace the advantage that we have with our small operation. We are a

small speedboat in a harbor of tankers. We are nimble. We can move fast and adapt to changing tides. That’s really important in modern business. Even more importantly, we are operating face-to-face with our customers and not waiting on demographic reports to be presented. You can’t beat that.”
Brood Soda participates in community events fairly often. What do you think are the issues currently facing the Durham community? Could Brood Soda have a role in combating some of those issues?
“Some would call it gentrification; in reality, it’s growth. Durham’s growing. I see a lot of residential buildings being completed. That means that a lot more people will call Durham home. As that segment of the community increases, the drawback of a transient college community becomes less impactful on local businesses. We’ll be there as often as we can to meet our neighbors and to continue Durham’s culture into its next phase. “
