Liam Gatensby has risen to the top of his sport in a matter of months.
At age 15, with under six months with the UVic track club, the young athlete won the Men’s 14-15 100 Metre Dash at the BC Athletics Championships Jamboree
in Kamloops last weekend with a Personal Best time of 11.52s.
“It felt really good,” he said “All that hard work paid off.”
Gatensby placed fifth in the Long Jump and fourth in the Men’s 14-15 100 Metre Hurdles, a sport he first tried in April of this year.
“He is an intelligent athlete who goes through an effort to understand his coaching,” said Dacre Bowen, Gatensby’s personal coach and coach for UVic’s Speed and Agility Academy.
“He brings knowledge of how to be coached from his hockey experience.”
The Kamloops competition was just a warm up for the budding track star as he heads to the BC Summer Games in Nanaimo this weekend.
“It’s my first time (going to the Summer Games). I’m looking forward to the whole experience and hanging out with my friends – and the event. It will be pretty fun, I think,” he said.
The Oak Bay High student first joined track in Grade 4 and kept at it through school until his coach encouraged him to join the UVic club earlier this year. He currently trains four to five days a week in preparation for the event.
Timing is everything

Six two-wheelers fit comfortably in the latest parking addition near Oak Bay Avenue.
At the corner of Hampshire Road a new bike rack fills the space of one car and can hold up to eight bikes.
“We are proud to introduce the first of what we hope will be several bike corrals located in key business areas in Oak Bay,” said Coun. Michelle Kirby, council liaison for the Active Transportation Advisory Committee. “Providing convenient and secure bicycle parking for our residents and visitors who cycle in our community is an important part of the ATAC’s planning work.”
“We see the value in the bike rack in that it adds the opportunity for people cycling to come downtown to the Oak
Bay village to do some shopping. And we need to increase more and more of the awareness and ability for people to park their bikes downtown,” said Kris Nichols, chair of the active transportation advisory committee.
Biking infrastructure improvements will only add to the business bustle of the Avenue agreed Mayor Nils Jensen.
“We want to encourage biking. It helps people’s health, it’s great for the environment and of course, I think it really is good for business,” he said.
“It’s a win-win-win situation, great for health, great for the environment, great for business.”
Infrastructure and installation for the improvements cost about $1,572.
“This idea of having more bike parking on the Avenue
came up at the parks and recreation commission a few months ago, and it’s been supported by staff, by council and the active transportation committee since then,” said Rick Marshall of the Oak Bay Parks and Recreation Commission. The Business Improvement Association suggested the site, he added. “People are coming to the village to shop, for dining, for entertainment and for recreation … and more and more they’re coming on
foot, by bike or by transit. That’s calling for more bike parking than we’ve had in the past.” [email protected]

Next month Seona Stephen slides into retirement from her duties as nurse, counsellor, psychologist, detective, financial advisor and dishwasher.
She’s performed each of those roles in her work as executive director of Carlton House for nearly 10 years, since the retirement residence opened.
“It’s never really felt like a job,” she said in her light Scottish brogue. “It has been such a rewarding experience as the residents have enriched my life with their personal stories and ability to still have fun.”
The touch of accent remains from her homeland, where she did her nurses training in Edinburgh. As a registered nurse, she brings to the job a wealth of experience in acute care hospitals, including Victoria General and Royal Jubilee; over the years she has managed surgical units, emergency, intensive care, operating rooms, worked with a staff of more than 200 and balanced a budget in the millions of dollars.
All prepared her for her work at Carlton House, but the residents there have only added to her education.
“I can learn a lesson or two from them. We’re always spending our time running around trying to avoid change,” she said. “Their tolerance and acceptance of things they cannot change, such as specific health issues, is amazing.”
She’ll take those lessons to her home community of View Royal where retirement plans include volunteer work and travel.
“First of all I’m going to learn all about consignment stores and take all my business suits in to recycle,” she said with a laugh.
But she’s already started to pursue her interest in Emergency Management Response and is enrolled, with her husband John, to become volunteers with the Emergency Support Services Program.
“I do have a need to give back to the community. I think that will be really rewarding,” she said. “I’ll still be able to help people and use the skills I’ve developed over the years and put them to good use.”
There she’ll utilize the
vast knowledge gained from residents and her work at Carlton House. It’s also a personal interest that harkens back two decades when the couple lost their Brentwood Bay home to a fire.
“It served us a purpose,” Stephen said, as they’ve overcome it and reached out to others in similar situations over the years.
The couple also has grand travel plans to get back to their roots.
“It’s a passion that both John and I share,” Stephen said. “Our next trip is in August, we’ll go to visit family in Scotland, Ireland, then over to Paris,
down to the south of France and then into Monaco.”
But this month she’ll help ease in new executive directer Terez Payette who takes the helm in August.
The roughly 100 residents are what Stephen expects to miss most about coming to Carlton House every day.
“They’ve been part of my life for nearly 10 years. They’re like part of my family.” cvanreeuwyk@oakbaynews.

Anyone can run in a municipal election campaign, but winning a seat requires planning, tact and seamless organization.
To help potential candidates meet that challenge, the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce is hosting a two-day seminar, Campaigning on a Shoestring, at the Sandman Victoria Hotel, 2852 Douglas St. this weekend.
The event includes sessions with members of the Manning School of Practical Politics.
The two-day event costs $99, or $134 with an extra Friday evening session. For more information, see victoriachamber.ca.

OUR VIEW
Congratulations to our young athletes
This weekend, athletes in close to two dozen sports will gather in Nanaimo to participate in the BC Summer Games.
For many, like Oak Bay athlete Liam Gatensby, it will be their first foray into high level athletic competition.
For many teens, it will be the start
of an athletic career that will take them on from the BC Summer Games to the Western Canada Games to the Canada Games, and for some, the Olympics.
They will remember this summer as the time their journey started.
For some, the BC Summer Games will be their only opportunity to participate in a multi-game event. But they, too, will remember their experiences at the Games for a lifetime.
It’s difficult for the News to ascertain just how many of young Oak Bay athletes will be participating in this year’s BC Summer Games, but we know their excitement and anticipation are certainly outweighed by the dedication and hard work put in by them throughout the year.
Like Liam, most of our young athletes keep their grades up and contribute to our community in a variety of ways.
We should be proud of their commitment to sport and the time they give to do their best.
Sport gives kids many opportunities in life, it teaches them life-lessons, not just about winning and losing, but about the value of hard work and effort.
It can also present educational and travel opportunities that will further enrich their lives.
To our Oak Bay BC Summer Games athletes, we say go out there and give it all you’ve got. Win or lose, you already make us proud.

Do you feel secure with the tiny sample we’ve so far experienced with climate change?
There is much more of it to come. How could it be otherwise when those in control of our destiny remain determinedly ignorant about this and firmly fixed on economic growth at any cost?
‘Economic growth’ especially, is the mantra of death, but so are some other kinds of growths we’ve been encouraged to admire: population growth in an already over-crowded world; energy growth in a world crammed with excess stuff and movement; and the growth of an Orwellian culture of mind control and a rapidly growing trend toward untrammeled police states.
In these circumstances, escalating the production and burning of carbon based fuels should be deemed ‘a crime against life on Earth,’ with the highest possible sanctions, starting now.
There was a time, not long ago when the term ‘profiteer,’
specifically ‘war profiteer,’ implied the strongest public sanctions.
I see a strong parallel with pushing carbon emissions as our world slides rapidly into climate crisis.
In all coming elections, we must detect and remove apparent sociopaths and others driven primarily by greed and false glory and put intelligent and honourable people in charge who will act in the true public interest.
Meanwhile think more about our predicament. We’ve a long way to go to find viable solutions, starting with determining what is likely to be viable in the long term.

Where is art to honour nature?
I am also puzzled by the lack of public art in our community. Esquimalt and Sidney, for example, are doing much better than us.
I am particularly amazed by the absence of reproductions of the
late Fenwick Lansdowne’s art, one of the world’s best bird artists, on our oceanfront. His paintings of Black Oystercatchers, Harlequin Ducks and Heermann’s Gulls are simply fantastic.
I would also like to see a meaningful totem pole telling the story of GOBI – Greater Oak Bay and Islands – with the appropriate wildlife (e.g. Orca, Chinook Salmon, Pacific Sandlance, Bald Eagle, Rhinoceros Auklet, Marbled Murrelet and even a Garry Oak, a Golden Paintbrush and a Victoria Owl-clover) on our oceanfront.
Indeed, our oceanfront, marine waters and islands support several species at risk of great interest, which are worth celebrating and which deserve our respect. These species make our lives a lot more interesting in Oak Bay.
We have an unusual collection of wild plants and animals living with us, like no other city in Canada.

achievable,” he said. “You can build on option one, and you’re not throwing away any of your work.”
Coun. Michelle Kirby was strongly in favour of committing to building a traditional three-way intersection right away to increase safety.
“Given how close it is to the school, we can only encourage kids to walk and cycle if safe infrastructure is in place,” she said. “It just simplifies it for pedestrians and cyclists. I really think it needs to be done.”
Coun. Kevin Murdoch had concerns about committing to spending more than double the cost of the first option for upgrades that could prove unnecessary, and noted that it addressed nearly all the safety concerns.
“What if there’s something else that $90,000 could go toward in a year or two?” he asked.
Coun. Pam Copley agreed with Kirby’s comments on safety, and suggested that council could accept option one with an amendment
to continue to monitor the intersection and revisit the possibility of option two within one or two years, instead of leaving it indefinitely.
Option one was referred to the budget committee for 2015, with the amendment that traffic and safety would continue to be monitored at the intersection and the possibility of upgrading be revisited within two years. Murdoch, Copley, Herbert and acting mayor Cairine Green passed the motion, with Kirby opposed.

Improvements to the intersection of Cadboro Bay road and Thompson avenue are on the way.
Limited visibility, inadequate crosswalks and traffic speed were all concerns that had been brought up by the public and council alike.
“Some serious incidents occurred earlier in the year,” said Coun. John Herbert.
An independent consultant was hired to conduct a traffic study and came up with three options for improving the intersection.
Option one would add a curb extension at the southeast quadrant of the intersection, realign the existing crosswalk, add a bike lane on Cadboro Bay road and extend the sidewalk on Thompson avenue 50 metres, at an estimated cost of $47,500.
The second option served as
an extension of the first, and would streamline westbound traffic on Thompson avenue, add two more crosswalks, and lengthen the southbound left turn lane on Cadboro Bay road. This would change the intersection into a more traditional three-way intersection with significant safety improvements, at an estimated cost of $135,500.
The final choice council was given was to install a roundabout, which after considering bike lanes, residential driveways and bus traffic, was deemed not feasible.
Dave Marshall, director of engineering for Oak Bay, presented the traffic study to council, and explained that if it accepted the recommended first option, it would not preclude further upgrading in the future. He described the options as stages, rather than as distinct choices.

Safety Tip:Long road trips can be hard on vehicles, so make sure yours is up to the drive. Check your engine oil, washer fl uid, lights and tires including the spare. Don’t forget to secure items inside and on your
vehicle, like bikes and items on your roof rack.
Question of the WeekThe posted speed limit has been raised by 10 km/h on long stretches of many major highways in B.C. Should they have been raised still higher?

Ford parties on with fun new FiestaTORONTO: It’s a lovely day on the backcountry roads of suburban Ontar-io, just west of Toronto, chosen to show off this ‘special’ version of the popular Ford Fiesta. It’s an enjoyable drive through a pretty landscape, dotted with quaint farms, moving along at a decent speed. Easy to forget the Fiesta is powered by Ford’s smallest engine, the 1.0L EcoBoost. With three-cylinders, an output of 123 horses and peak torque of 125 lb-ft., it’s not something to scoff at. Furthermore, there’s an overboost feature that will give you access to 148 lb-ft of torque for up to 15 seconds. Furthermore, Ford touts it as having the best highway fuel economy in its class. It uses an estimated 4.3L/100km on the highway and 6.2L/100km in the city. Along with this new engine, there are also a few tweaks for the 2014 model year. You’ll find new headlamps with chrome accents, a new decklid and tail lamps. Inside, there are new steering wheel controls, a new door design, a new cluster design and additional chrome accents on the door handles and throughout. Not to mention the
additional cupholder in the rear!Complete with a new interior and exterior look, the Fiesta certainly adds life to the party. It exudes pep and still has a lively personality. That can be attributed to a 5-speed manual trans-mission. With the 5-speed manual, the gear throws felt a little long, but then again, we’re not talking about the ST, its the Fiesta’s performance-ori-ented sibling. Noteworthy: the cabin stays serene even at highway speeds; when you’re cruising in fifth.
Keeping unwanted noise out of the car’s interior is always high on the priority list for subcompacts. It has a roomy trunk, accommodating up to 422L behind the second row in the hatchback.Of the two body styles offered – there’s a sedan or 5-door – I fancy the hatch-back. I also think its styling has a little more flare. As for handling, we had the chance to put it through an autocross-style track to demonstrate its abilities in tighter, higher speed turns. While many people probably won’t drive the Fiesta like this – even though it’s quite fun – it can handle its share of bends without
faltering. Matched with its electric power-assisted steering, you have a good amount of steering feel whether driving at high or low speeds. The engine is its strongpoint but it’s not just a one-trick pony. I like the interior a lot. The steering wheel is soft to the touch and I like that you can control various functions like the audio, Bluetooth, or cruise control from it. The centre stack has charm, too. Atop sits a colour display, followed by Ford’s infotainment system, followed by the climate con-trols. It’s hard to get lost in its setup, and the buttons are clearly marked with large writing. Equipping the Fiesta with the 1.0L en-
gine has a $1,295 premium. What that gives you is the extra bit of power and the fuel economy savings. This engine can only be outfitted on the SE trim, which has a starting MSRP of $14,866. However, it’s available on both the sedan and hatchback models.Overall, the Ford Fiesta 1.0L has its benefits. A snappy engine, a great look and a comfortable ride quality. Whether you just drive it around the city or beyond, the Fiesta one-litre is a sturdy road companion with impressive fuel economy. Visit www.ford.ca for more information.

Newly available features for the 2014 model include a back-up camera with parking sensors for those who need them, push-button start, and heated leather.

Even if you squint while looking at the Hybrid gas-electric car on your driveway, you likely have a hard time imagining it is anything like an F1 racecar. However, the new advanced hybrid technology at play in this 2014 season means that Formula 1 has never been closer to your driveway. The car power units are 1600cc tur-bocharged V6 engines with direct fuel injection. They have to complete each race with 35 per cent less fuel, with a maximum fuel load of 100kg (not litres) and the fuel flow is restricted to 100 kg/hour. That would mean your favourite driver would bow out half way through without further engineer-ing help.In addition, the power units have two electric motors, one linked directly to the turbocharger, the other working in the same way that the Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) used to do. The result is a combined maximum power output of around 760bhp, which is similar to the output of the V8 cars of last year.It is a certainty that the rapid-fire experimentation that is going on in F1 will result in improvements to our everyday cars. That’s the beauty of this highly competitive sport that is so geared to winning. Changes come faster because there’s no chance to undertake testing that takes ages
under normal testing.Last year, when I visit-ed the Monaco Grand Prix as a guest of the Infiniti-Red Bull F1 race team, I chatted to Infiniti engineers who marvelled at the pace of improvement. Said one Infiniti engineer: “They do things so much more quickly than we can do under normal development processes because they have to. And the changes they make are so thoroughly tested on the track. It points two ways: sometimes what they do shows us the way to go but also the way not to go!”Hong Kong-based Infiniti has made a very shrewd move in tying itself to the F1 team and particularly the reigning F1 champion Sebastian Vettel. The German racer is the marque’s Director of Performance. His association goes far beyond the typical celebrity endorsement, for he takes on a literal hands-on-the-wheel approach to his role. He has played a significant role in the development of the compact Q30, which should surface later next year. He has already left his mark on the all-new Infiniti Q50 sport sedan and sports car enthusiasts pray a
high-powered ‘Eau Rouge’ version of the car will hit the production line. Yours truly, will join the team next month at the Belgian Grand Prix, at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, location of the famous ‘Eau Rouge’ corner. We will drive Q50s from the south of England, through the Euro Tunnel and on to Spa.Immediately prior to the race week-end, yours truly will join international journalists in a behind-the-scenes visit to the team’s UK base in Milton Keynes. There we will learn something about the fast track work they carry out on the F1 cars. I suspect we will get a peek at what is in store for that car on your driveway and you will read about it here.

The Carnarvon U14B team continued its silver streak with a second place finish at the provincial championships in North Delta last weekend.
The girls baseball team will next head to Lloydminster, Alta. to compete in the U14 Western Canadian Softball Championships Aug. 1 to 4.
“They really had a good tournament. They played hard and got a good outcome,” said coach Bill Hawkins.
The 12-, 13- and 14-year-olds have played together for the past four years and have excelled under coaching from Hawkins, Deb Buxcey, Jill Moreau, Kelsie Hawkins and Erica Littler.
“Coaching for this team is amazing,” said parent Cindy Kind. “They put in hours and hours of their time and (the team) could not have done it without them.”
The elder Hawkins and Buxcey have been coaching as a team for the past 15 years and welcome the assistance from their former players.
“I love how the young women (Moreau, 25; Hawkins, 21; and Littler, 20) that we coached years ago, come back to help out these younger players and really give them something to aspire to. It’s a real community effort,” said Hawkins.
The team practises year-round, weekly in the fall and twice weekly in spring. “It’s just year-after-year it all builds on itself. The ability to work on things in the off season allows them to play at that level,” he said.
The provincial tournament saw the team play seven games over three days. “We were three-and-one in total, and in the playoffs they won right through to the final,” he said. The girls lost to the Vancouver Wildcats 3-2.
Hawkins said this team is the first from the Oak Bay Carnarvon baseball association to medal at the provincials.
“It’s quite a feat for them,” he said. The biggest challenge in the next three weeks
is raising enough cash to get them to Alberta for the tournament. The estimated cost is $14,000 for travel and hotels.
“We fundraise throughout the year, but this is kind of unexpected. You can’t be so bold as to think you’re going to go this far,” Hawkins said.
The team will be out canvassing for donations in Oak Bay. To donate contact Hawkins at [email protected].

“I’m concentrating on my starts. … My hurdles are pretty bad lately. I have to get over the hurdles more efficiently,” he said. “It’s concentration and timing. Timing is everything.”
Dacre said Gatensby responds well to coaching. “He keeps improving every time out, as they say of athletes, he has a strong upside.”
The teen also plays hockey, baseball and basketball, achieving honours in all three.
“I have a favourite achievement for each of my sports. For baseball, being the MVP of my team at the peewee A provincial championships in which my team won the silver medal. For hockey, making the bantam A team as a first year. For basketball, starting all four games
for my team at the BC Grade 9 basketball championships. And for track, being city champion at the 100m for the last two years (and) winning a gold medal for the Grade 10 boys 4x100 relay as a Grade 9,” Gatensby said.
He also keeps his grades at or above B level, and has done so since Grade 6.
He enjoys every aspect of sport, saying simply: “It’s fun.” Although, as he heads into Grade 10 this fall, he will be zeroing in on athletics.
“Next year, I’m going to focus more on it. I’m going to take it more seriously,” he said. That includes joining Athletic Leadership at Oak Bay High.
But for now, he looks down the track at the hurdles before him and concentrates.
About the GamesThe BC Games were originally a vision of Pre-
mier W. R. Bennett who believed in providing an opportunity to bring all parts of BC together, large and small communities, in the spirit of sport and friendship.
The original mandate of the BC Games was to provide an opportunity for all British Columbians
to compete in an organized sports festival that promoted physical fitness, individual achieve-ment and community pride. The first BC Sum-mer Games were held in Penticton in 1978 with the first BC Winter Games taking place the fol-lowing year in Kamloops.
In 1994, the BC Games shifted from a partic-ipation-focused event to become a key part of athlete and sport development in the province. Continued from Page A1

Oak Bay!
Laura LavinNews staff
An important question to ask when you’re purchasing property in Oak Bay is not, ‘is there a buried oil tank?’ rather, it’s ‘where is the oil tank buried?’
Underground oil storage tanks are common in Greater Victoria; natural gas was not brought to the area until the early ‘90s and oil heat was common.
If you’re selling your home, you’ll want to know if there’s a tank buried on your property and if there is: “Get rid of it,” says Oak Bay Realtor Cassie Kangas.
“There is a culture of fear around them,” says the realtor who grew up in Oak Bay. The fear is due to the cost a leaking tank can cause the owner – upwards of $50,000, if the spill has spread.
When selling, Kangas says start with a realtor who knows the area. “They can pull the records at the Oak Bay Fire Department – homeowners can do that themselves, but that’s why you have a realtor, they can do those things for you. They understand what the records mean and can sit
you down and tell you what you need to do.”
Depending on what the record says, there are a variety of steps a homeowner can take to prepare their property for sale. If an oil tank that has not been rendered inert is on the property, a scan can be done to find it and Kangas says, if the seller is in a financial position to remove it, that is the best
option. It’s better to find the tank
and deal with it prior to putting your home on the market because a buried oil tank can be a deal breaker when it comes to making a sale.
“We’ve seen some fairly scary situations where people have done work with no permit,” Kangas says. Oil tanks can be found buried under
driveways and patios and even under extensions made to the home. “Just because you don’t know it’s there doesn’t absolve you (financially, if there’s a leak),” she says.
Those looking to buy in the area should be just as diligent about buried oil tanks. “Again, use a realtor who knows the area. … If a seller hasn’t disclosed that there’s a tank, or doesn’t
know, get (your realtor) to go to the Oak Bay Fire Department and pull the records.”
Then, she says, you can negotiate with the seller to have the tank removed.
“The seller really needs to deal with it prior to selling,” says Kangas. “A buried oil tank is no big deal, but if it’s leaking, suddenly it’s a big deal.”[email protected]

The old oil tank beside Keith and Susanne Phillips’ home leaked in 2011, sending upwards of 1,000 litres of heating oil into the ground. Their entire lawn was dug up and completely destroyed, and the Phillips’ insurance didn’t cover the cleanup costs, leaving the couple with a $48,000 bill.
