President’s Report ....Peter Cannon

H ello everyone,

Isn't Spring wonderful? Mother Nature is giving us a treat - dressing trees, shrubs and plants in their new clothes with vibrant colours to make you smile. The Mother’s Day lunch was well attended and much enjoyed. Thanks so much to Gillian and her merry band of helpers for a job well done. Markham Seniors Hall of Fame will be seeking nominations for volunteers who have made a difference to the lives of others to be recognized at their annual event. The nomination forms will be available at our Front Desk soon. Have a think about who you might wish to nominate for recognition by the City. By the time you read this we shall all know who our new Directors are and the composition of our new Board. I want to thank all those who put their names up for consideration and wish them luck in the Election process. Thanks very much to the retiring Directors for their hard work and valuable contribution to Board meetings. You would be surprised to know how much of their time these volunteers give to your Club. They deserve a round of applause for their efforts. Our annual picnic is scheduled for June 13th and we hope the weather will co-operate. Come out and enjoy games, food, fellowship and fun with other members. You might meet somebody you never knew before and make a new friendship which is always nice as you cannot have too many friends. Enjoy you club, wear your badges and a big smile. Thank the volunteers who run the activities you enjoy and offer your help if needed.

Have a great Summer everybody.

From the Publisher

As a novice publisher, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those wonderful members

for their words of encouragement, praise, and feedback on the newsletters published since last

October. Your comments are most valuable during my learning curve. Special thanks go out to

Mike Huffman and Mark Barrett for their computer expertise, to Marjorie Nielsen for her patience

and time proofreading in a tight timeline, and lastly but not least to Audrey Hillis for being the

powerhouse and the “go to” person. Without this team of experts, our newsletter cannot be

published successfully. By the way, if you haven’t done so already, try reading our newsletters in

colour at our website at: www.markhamseniorcentre.com. It sure beats reading in black and white.

If you would like to submit an article that may be of interest to our OAIA members, please email it

to: [email protected] or drop off a hard copy into the newsletter drop box

outside the Centre’s office.

Please be advised that there will be no newsletters issued for July and August. Submissions for

the September issue must be in by August 20th. Have a safe and wonderful summer everyone!!

Wednesday Afternoon Knitting Club

The Wednesday Afternoon Knitting Club would like to thank everyone for their donations and

purchases over the last nine months.

The ladies of the group have enjoyed making the items and are pleased when they notice their

articles have been sold from the display case.

Betty contributed some knitting supplies and Dave brought in some items his wife had worked on.

We would also like to thank a few people who have offered to help us on their own time. They are

Debbie, Wendy and Lynn. Thanks.

We finished the cat blankets for this year and they were delivered to the Thornhill Community

Centre which houses the cat rescue for the city. They were delighted.

Keep safe for the Summer on the roads and water and we hope to see everyone back in

September.

VERY INTERESTING FACTS ! !

Dead Penguins - I never knew this!

Did you ever wonder why there are no dead penguins on the ice in Antarctica?

Where do they go?

Wonder no more ! ! !

It is a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualistic bird which lives an extremely or-

dered and complex life. The penguin is very committed to its family and will mate for

life, as well as maintain a form of compassionate contact with its offspring throughout

its life.

If a penguin is found dead on the ice surface, other members of the family and social

circle have been known to dig holes in the ice, using their vestigial wings and beaks,

until the hole is deep enough for the dead bird to be rolled into, and buried.

The male penguins then gather in a circle around the fresh grave and sing:

"Freeze a jolly good fellow."

"Freeze a jolly good fellow."

You really didn't believe that I know anything about penguins, did you?

It's so easy to fool OLD people.

I am sorry, an urge came over me that made me do it!!!

Oh quit whining and send it on

Take two minutes to read these sayings and be sure to read all the way to the bottom:

Written by Andy Rooney, a man who had the gift of saying so much with so few words. ? Rooney used to be on 60 Minutes TV show.

I've learned....

That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

I've learned.... That when you're in love, it shows.

I've learned ....

That just one person saying to me, 'You've made my day!' makes my day.

I've learned.... That having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.

I've learned....

That being kind is more important than being right.

I've learned.... That you should never say no to a gift from a child.

I've learned....

That I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help him in any other way.

I've learned.... That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.

I've learned....

That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.

I've learned.... That simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.

I've learned....

That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

I've learned....

That we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for.

I've learned.... That money doesn't buy class.

I've learned....

That it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

I've learned... That under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.

I've learned...

That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.

I've learned.... That when you plan to get even with someone,

you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.

I've learned.... That love, not time, heals all wounds.

I've learned....

That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.

I've learned....

That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

I've learned.... That no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.

I've learned...

That life is tough, but I'm tougher.

I've learned.... That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.

I've learned....

That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

I've learned.... That I wish I could have told my Mom that I love her one more time before she passed away.

I've learned.... That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.

I've learned....

That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

I've learned.... That when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, you're hooked for life.

I've learned....

That everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.

I've learned.... That the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

To all of you....

Make sure you read all the way down to the last sentence.

Show your friends how much you care.

Send this to everyone you consider a FRIEND, even if it means sending it back to the person who sent it to you.

If it comes back to you, then you'll know you have a circle of friends.

YOU ARE MY FRIEND AND I AM HONORED!

Now send this to every friend you have! And to your family.

This was sent to me by a friend during National Friendship Week.
