WELCOME TO OUR BIRTHDAY SEASON, CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF BREAKING THE RULES.

Three decades ago a group of musicians decided to do a string (no pun intended) of things they were told weren’t possible. They founded their own orchestra, financed privately. They decided not to have an artistic director, and instead to make musical decisions themselves. They would be run democratically. They would use period instruments but also invite in conductors from the ‘modern’ world. They were told that all of these things were crazy, foolish, impossible. But this year, the musicians of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment celebrate 30 years of concert-giving, during which they have constantly challenged convention and pushed musical boundaries.

If you’re an OAE (our acronym from now on, it gives us RSI typing it out each time) fan already you’ll probably want to skip on to see what we’re playing. But if you’re new to us you might wonder why you would choose us over other orchestras that quite possibly have more impressive anniversaries.

So we think it comes down to three things:

Originality: we play on original instruments (or copies of them) and in styles appropriate for the period of the music. So you get to hear what the composer actually intended (or as close as we can make it) rather than a modern version of it.

Freshness: Unlike many, we’re not a full-time orchestra. So each time we play a piece of music we approach it with a real freshness, excitement and enthusiasm. We like to think that this comes across.

Zest. This is the ‘X’ factor. We love what we do. That’s why we set up the OAE in the first place. How often do you see an orchestra smile on stage? We do. We’re passionate about our music and want you to be too.

So, there you have it. Originality, Freshness and Zest. The last two make us sound a bit like a gin and tonic – but maybe that’s no bad thing.

Genius and madness are common bedfellows, and this concert focusses on the music of Robert Schumann – a composer who ended his days in an asylum. The electrifying violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja joins us for his violin concerto, with its moving, intense and lyrical central movement. The evening ends with the joyous Rhenish symphony.

One of the key figures of the OAE’s history, Sir Roger Norrington, joins our Birthday celebrations. Mozart’s delightful concerto is juxtaposed with Haydn’s ‘fowl’ Symphony No. 83, complete with ‘clucking’ first movement. The evening ends with a ‘crass monster’ of a symphony, as described by a critic of the time.
