Open Letter to Provost Fleming: Extend NYU Graduate Funding & Time-to-Degree Deadlines NYU graduate students: please sign your name and provide a testimonial here. Dear Provost Fleming, We, the undersigned graduate students, urge all schools across NYU to take the following measures to ensure the livelihoods of graduate students in light of the COVID-19 crisis: Extend all university graduate student funding packages and time-to-degree deadlines by one year. Provide tuition waivers for all masters students who opt-in to degree extensions. Waive maintenance of matriculation and health care fees for all graduate students. Provide three-month emergency summer funding proportionate to the AY fellowship amount. Graduate students’ research, teaching, and professional development simply cannot take place as usual under these circumstances. Many of us are or will be sick, are taking on new caretaking responsibilities, and are faced with the mental health toll of the crisis. In addition, the crisis brings many unique academic challenges. The widespread closures of laboratories, archives, and universities prevent us from conducting research crucial for our dissertations and theses. We are impeded from publicizing our research and engaging with other scholars by the cancellation of conferences and disruptions to academic journals. Many of us are spending extra time reconfiguring lesson plans for remote teaching and taking on the often-overlooked care work of supporting undergraduate students during this challenging time. Furthermore, we have less access to intellectual interaction with colleagues and students—all important aspects of the graduate student experience—as well as advisors and members of our committees, who themselves are confronted with greater personal and professional challenges. All of these factors threaten to make it harder for us to finish our degrees on time and—for the many of us who plan to seek academic jobs—to make us less prepared for the academic job market. Because many grants, job applications, conferences, and publications operate on yearly cycles, even a few months’ disruption has the potential to set us back a year. Moreover, the fallout from the crisis has already led to hiring freezes that will profoundly worsen the already limited market for university teaching positions. We therefore also need the security of an additional year of funding to prepare for and find an academic job. 1

Open Letter to Provost Fleming: Extend NYU Graduate Funding & Time-to-Degree Deadlines NYU graduate students: please sign your name and provide a testimonial here. Dear Provost Fleming, We, the undersigned graduate students, urge all schools across NYU to take the following measures to ensure the livelihoods of graduate students in light of the COVID-19 crisis:

● Extend all university graduate student funding packages and time-to-degree deadlines by one year.

○ Provide tuition waivers for all masters students who opt-in to degree extensions.

● Waive maintenance of matriculation and health care fees for all graduate students. ● Provide three-month emergency summer funding proportionate to the AY

fellowship amount.

NYU and dozens of other universities have already extended the tenure deadlines for tenure-track faculty due to the severity of the crisis. We applaud this decision, and urge NYU to extend the same policy to its graduate students, who constitute a critical part of university life. All time-to-degree deadlines should be extended by a year; for masters students, no additional tuition fees should be charged for extended degrees. Furthermore, all recipients of university fellowships—including the MacCracken fellowship, the Corrigan fellowship, and the Steinhardt doctoral funding package—should be awarded an additional full year of guaranteed funding, in amounts equal to or higher than the rates they receive in the 2019–20 academic year. For graduate students whose funding comes from sources outside the university, such as engineering students in Tandon, NYU must commit to offer the equivalent of one year’s worth of such external funding, again in amounts equal to or higher than those currently received. NYU must also cover all short-term fellowships (e.g. dissertation writing fellowships) that applied this spring. We understand that fellowships are usually funded by the budgets of specific schools or departments. However, we believe that the severity of the situation requires that the university—which has the resources to do so—provide schools with additional emergency funds in order to extend grad student funding. NYU graduate students: please sign your name and provide a testimonial here. Signed,
