On September 9, 1964, we came to assume roles about which we knewlittle but about which we harbored many ideas - some realistic, others

far-fetched.

Throughout these past years at CMH we have gradually evolved into

some semblance of the professional nurse. Every day, whether it be hap-

py or sad, dull or hectic, trying or rewarding has given us a backgroundupon which we will build a profession.

By constant exposure to hospital- life and the world of medicine, wehave adopted the jargon, experienced the trials and tribulations, gained

new ideas, and maybe even a new set of values.

So, here we have finally arrived to a new plateau, fired with the en-

thusiasm and idealism of the young - the world of the graduate.

PEDIA TRICSSome of the most rewarding experiences the seniorhas during the year are found on pediatrics. Com-bining nursing skills with patience,tireless energy,and a sense of humor, the senior student completesten weeks of challenging patient care of "little

people".

OBSTETRICSObstetrical nursing not only requires acute ob-

servation and good judgement on the part of the

student but also emotional involvement with the

mother and family unit. Obstetrics is probably the

most unique service in which the student finds

herself during the senior year.

INTENSIVECARE

Intensive care unit is appropriately titled, as this

is precisely what is required of the student nurse-- intensive care given to the patient. This is per-haps the first experience the student has in nurs-ing such critically ill patients. Using theory andpractical experience obtained through intensive

study, the student gains confidence and skill in car-ing for all patients.

TEAMNURSING

Organization and communication among nursingpersonnel are vital components in giving goodnursing care. The student nurse gets first handexperience in acquiring and using these skills

while working as a team leader and functioning as

a member of the nursing team. Hard work anda vast knowledge of pathology and disease are re-

quired in team nursing.

EMERGENCYROOM

Emergency nursing requires quick thinking andaction plus responsible judgement. Working in the

emergency room gives the student varied and prof-itable experience in using acquired nursing know-ledge and skill in situations which call for imme-diate care.

OUTPA TIENTCLINIC

While in the outpatient clinics of the hospital the

senior student is provided with the opportunity to

convey her accumulated knowledge of nutrition,

hygiene, and self- care to the layman. Not only does

this experience let her teach, but she also gains

knowledge in practically all phases in medicinefrom the doctors she assists.

/. V. TEAMPrinciples of intravenous therapy are acquired bythe student while working with the I. V. Team. Thisknowledge instills confidence in the student while

caring for patients receiving this therapy andenables her to give better care.

ties of leadership, scholarship, character, and who has made worthwhile contributions

to school-life. For those qualities which have set her apart as an outstanding memberof our Senior Class, the Lamp Award is presented to Miss Jane Willard.

MarshalsEach year those students from the rising Senior class who have ex-

hibited high scholastic achievement are chosen to be marshals. Thesestudents function at graduation exercises in helping to seat guests and to

Santa FilomenaThe Santa Filomena is the Senior Honorary Society of Charlotte Me-

morial Hospital School of Nursing. The members of this organization arechosen from the rising Senior Class and are publicly tapped by the old

members at the last Student Body meeting of the year in their Junior year.

Each student must have demonstrated superior nursing abilities and leader-

ship. Her scholastic record must be a B or above throughout the Fresh-man and Junior years. The Santa Filomena's flower is the white lily andeach member of the Society wears a smallgold Florence Nightingale Lamppin on the uniform as a symbol of achievement.

Social CommitteeOur social committee is an active organization which promotes activ-

ities in which the student may participate. This year they have been re-

sponsible for Parent's Weekend, Peanut Week, The Christmas Dance, andSpring semi-formal, as well as many other enjoyable events. We areespecially thankful for the marvelous job that they have done this year.

Student CouncilThe Student Council Organization conducts all business of the Student

Government Association and coordinates the activities of our various

clubs and organizations on campus. The Council is composed of the Student

Government officers, representatives from the class and each organization.

This organization helps to maintain high standards of loyalty, duty,

and scholarship and advances the general welfare of our school.
