PASTORAL COLUMN

Dear Brothers and Sisters, We continue to grow closer to a full and complete facilities here on campus. Last week the Fire Marshall approved the Christus Center kitchen for use. So, we begin a new era with this large commercial kitchen that will assist us in providing adequate space for parish functions, including renting the space for wedding receptions. Through a variety of settings, the Christus Center will accommodate up to 580 people with a dance floor. A committee worked at establishing the cost for rental and with the Finance Council’s recommendations, we have moved forward to a rental cost that is a fair cost value for the space; remaining less than comparable venues for the use of our parishioners. Once the kitchen in McGivney Hall is approved, we will have two wonderful places for gatherings accompanied by new commercial kitchens. As these facilities begin to be used, we will look for a paid, part-time rental coordinator to handle the bookings, set-ups and clean-ups for these events. If you are interested in such an opportunity, please contact the office for an application form and resume submittal. Congratulations to the choir for a wonderful concert this past Thursday evening. It was a wonderful evening of praise to God in thanksgiving for the Lord leading us beyond the waters of Hurricane Harvey and back into our home. God certainly did not abandon that even when, like the Israelites in the desert, we may have grumbled and complained. Our God is one of tremendous blessings and singing His praises lifted mind and soul alike. Well done! You may have seen the news that the Bishops of Texas have each agreed to join the Diocese of Fort Worth in publishing a list of any bishops, priests (diocesan and religious) or deacons who have been credibly accused of abuse of a minor while serving in ministry in our respective dioceses. The formal statement was issued on October 10, 2018 through the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops, as well as a local press release from our own Archdiocesan media office. Cardinal DiNardo stated: “We reached this decision after much discussion, reflection and prayer. We know that this will be very difficult on all of us as members of the Presbyterate (and Church), but we believe that it is a critical step toward restoring the truth of the faithful both in the Church and its leaders. To date, there are over 55 dioceses across the United States that have either published a similar list or have announced their plans to do so. The Archdiocese is engaging an outside consultant to conduct an independent review of our files and records so that the list will be as accurate and complete as possible. We have agreed to publish our individual lists no later than January 31, 2019.” Friends, this will be a very difficult time for the Church and as Pope Francis said, it is a time for intense prayer. Many places throughout the USA are calling upon the people of God to pray the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel to defend us in this battle against Satan and his minions. The prayer is below. Please clip it out and use it everyday with your daily prayers. With my prayers for our parish renewal,

THIS WEEK’S READINGS THIS WEEK’S READING

Sunday, Oct 21, 2018 TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Chasing greatness Ruins of ancient empires can be found around the globe. We’re awed by these traces of grandeur even as we’re summoned to awareness of the passing of worldly power. Every nation in his-tory that once sought to be great has the antiquities to testify to their achievement—and the ashes to witness to its elusiveness. The only greatness that matters is the kind that lays its privilege down for the sake of the lowly. Dare to be great in the way of the Kingdom. Use your personal authority to lift others up, not to promote your own gain.

TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 53:10-11; Hebrews 4:14-16; Mark 10:35-45 or 10:42-45 (146). “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left.”

Monday, Oct 22, 2018 MEMORIAL OF JOHN PAUL II, POPE Be strong through vulnerability When we count out the qualities we would like in a leader, rarely would we cite shame. However it is precisely this sense of shame that urges leaders to search out and claim ownership of their faults and mistakes. In this sense, Saint John Paul II stands out as an example for both political and religious leaders. In his book, When a Pope Asks Forgiveness, Luigi Accattoli cites 94 occa-sions in which Saint John Paul II acknowledged either personal or institutional culpability for mistakes and social injustices. Far from being a sign of weakness, this vulnerability formed one of his true strengths as a leader. How can the leadership roles you take on become opportunities to practice humility?

TODAY'S READINGS: Ephesians 2:1-10; Luke 12:13-21 (473). “Take care to guard against all greed.”

Tuesday, Oct 23, 2018 MEMORIAL OF JOHN OF CAPISTRANO, PRIEST Don’t take flight at signs of adversity In 1776, when a new California mission was named in honor of John Capistran by Junipero Serra, perhaps it was to honor a vital, hardworking, and optimistic fellow Franciscan of the 15th century when church and world were torn by everything from plague to heresy. Amazingly energetic, John was a force for re-newal and fidelity in a fiercely divided church. And then there are the swallows. They return to the abandoned mission every spring and leave around this time. They, too, were optimists when they began to settle at the mission after a local innkeeper destroyed their unseemly muddy nests. Ask yourself: Can I hold on to the joy and optimism of a dauntless swallow or a dedicat-ed reformer, even when things do not unfold as I’d like?

TODAY'S READINGS: Ephesians 2:12-22; Luke 12:35-38 (474). “But God, who is rich in mercy . . . raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”

Wednesday, Oct 24, 2018 MEMORIAL OF ANTHONY MARY CLARET, BISHOP Live large Some saints make their mark by doing only one thing, but doing it very well. Others, like Anthony Mary Claret, paint with a broader brush. Claret founded a religious order, fought for so-cial change, was a writer and publisher, archbishop and refugee, even for a while chaplain to the queen of Spain—against his

wishes, as he let her know. He was especially revered in Cuba where he spoke out against the abuses of slavery, which rankled the landed class and brought no less than 14 attempts on his life. Claret lived life large. Dare to dream your own big dreams for the sake of the gospel—and get out there to make them happen.

TODAY'S READINGS: Ephesians 3:2-12; Luke 12:39-48 (475). “You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”

Thursday, Oct 25, 2018 Be on fire with faith Zeal for God’s mission was personified, and indeed incarnated, in the person of Jesus the Christ. Jesus’ passion to serve others and to share the gospel was one of his enduring gifts to his dis-ciples then and now. It wasn’t only about the “doing” of the faith, however, but of fully becoming what one loved and be-lieved. A story from the desert fathers and mothers illustrates that well: “Abba Lot went to see Abba Joseph and said, ‘Abba as far as I can I say my little office [prayers], I fast a little, I pray and meditate, I live in peace and as far as I can, I purify my thoughts. What else can I do?’ Then the old man stood up and stretched his hands toward heaven. His fingers became like ten lamps of fire and he said to him, ‘If you will, you can become all flame.’”

TODAY'S READINGS: Ephesians 3:14-21; Luke 12:49-53 (476). “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing.”

Friday, Oct 26, 2018 Learn the language of signs “Signs” was the name of a 1970’s pop tune that complained about the clutter and negativity of so many signs that surround us, from billboards to those of the “Keep out” and “Do not trespass” variety. But one line in the countercultural song takes a surprising turn: “And the sign said ‘Everybody welcome. Come in, kneel down, and pray.’ ” Given the clutter of signs and messages that bombard us daily, it’s difficult to make out the signs that point us to peace and spiritual growth. Any sign that encourages us to take a moment out for quiet reflection and prayer is a trustworthy sign. Keep an eye out for one today!

TODAY'S READINGS: Ephesians 4:1-6; Luke 12:54-59 (477). “Why do you not know how to interpret the present time?”

Saturday, Oct 27, 2018 MEMORIAL OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Let the loving saints shine Media resources tend to shower glory on athletes, celebrities, and winning candidates. This worldly praise and honor doesn’t resemble the divine attribute of glory much. God chooses to share a reflection of divine glory with a surprisingly different cast of characters: the meek, the lowly, the little ones. This glory gives the saints their radiant haloes and makes people with lov-ing ways shine when they walk in the room. On this final Satur-day of Rosary Month, pray the Glorious Mysteries for more radiant ones to bless our world!

TODAY'S READINGS: Ephesians 4:7-16; Luke 13:1-9 (478). “He . . . is the same one who ascended far above all the heav-ens, so that he might fill all things.”

Prayer for Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your

children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude; you are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its

seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our

land, and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane

season, we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin,

Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and

animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps

of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a storm-less

eternity awaits us. Amen.

COLUMNA PASTORAL

EVENTOS
