New Awards
Establishment Following feedback from the Membership as a whole, and through agreement by the President and Executive Committee, the following NZSA awards will be offered on an annual basis from 2013: 1. The Campbell Award, focusing on sustained, lifetime achievement. 2. The NZSA Research Award: the senior research award, recognizing an outstanding body of work over a five year period. 3. The NZSA Early Career Research Award: for those with less than 7 years post-‐PhD in a research position. The finalized regulations appear as an appendix to this Report. Details of these awards have been published on the NZSA website.
Nominations A call for nominations was sent out on 1 August 2013, with the deadline for response set for 30 September. In the event, only one nomination was received by this date for the three awards combined. The President therefore approved an extension of the deadline to 16 October.
Campbell Bequest Fund Awards No requests for support received during the past 3 months. Martin Hazelton 2 October 2013
Appendix
Proposed Regulations for Revised NZSA Awards Campbell Award The purpose of the award is to promote statistics within NZ and to recognise an individual's sustained contribution to the promotion and development of statistics. The criteria for the award are: i) publication of an exceptional body of original statistical research undertaken within NZ; or, ii) a prolonged and outstanding contribution to statistical education; or, iii) playing a key role in consulting on major, innovative research projects that have direct relevance to NZ; or, iv) making a leading contribution to the promotion of statistics within NZ over a sustained period. Notes:
• The award is known as the NZSA Campbell Award.
• One award will be given annually, at the NZSA annual dinner in conjunction with the annual conference. In exceptional circumstances, more than one award may be given in a year.
• An award may not necessarily be given out each year.
• Nominations can be made by individuals or groups of individuals. Nominators
may be non-NZSA members. Nominations will include a statement of support from the nominator and may include names of suitable referees.
• The award may only be given to fully paid up members of the NZSA. All
membership categories are eligible.
• Normally the award will only be given to a member once in their lifetime.
• An awards convenor will be selected from the current executive who will oversee the process of calling for nominations. The executive will elect an awards panel consisting of the awards convenor and no fewer than two other fully paid up members of the NZSA. The panel will decide on that year’s recipient. The panel may call for any additional information from the nominators.
• The awards panel will use suitable measures for each of the four criteria.
These may include: for research, the publication record, and the originality, applicability, impact of the research; for contribution to statistical education, development of innovative teaching practices and curricula, development within other subjects, and development of links with other practices; for consulting, the project size, profile, application in a new area, rigour, relevance to solving real problems; and in promotion, the appropriate use of statistics and demonstrating the relevance of statistics. In all cases a record of achievement over an extended period is expected.
NZSA Research Award This award is based on original statistical research published in the last five calendar years. Candidates will normally have been residents of New Zealand for this period, and must be financial members of the Association. Nominations and applications should include the following:
• name and affiliation of candidate; • statement of general area of research; • names of two persons willing to act as referees; • a list of books and/or research articles published in the last five calendar years; • electronic copies of the each of the five most significant publications selected from the list above;
• a clear statement of how much of any joint work is due to the candidate; • and a citation, of maximum 40 words, summarizing the statistical research
underlying the application. NZSA Early Career Research Award This award recognizes outstanding recent published research from a New Zealand statistician in the early stages of their career. The criteria for eligibility are the same as for the Marsden Fund Fast-Start grants. Essentially, this means applicants must be within seven years of confirmation of PhD, or their highest completed degree for an applicant without a PhD. Candidates will have completed the majority of this research within New Zealand, and will financial members of the Association. Applications should include the following:
• the candidate's best three papers and a two-page CV. The papers must have been peer-reviewed, and be published or in press. In cases of joint authorship, a clear statement of the contribution of the candidate should be made.
• A citation, of maximum 40 words, summarizing the statistical research underlying the application.
ANZJS Report 8 October 2013 The Editors worked very hard in 2012 to get the issues back on schedule and we have continued to focus on this in 2013. We have managed to get the two 2013 issues produced so far out on time, although this was achieved by publishing a "thin" issue when there was a potential delay. Being on schedule is important for the status of the journal and for the citation measures used to evaluate journals these days. According to Wiley, the impact factor (released in June) increased slightly from 0.436 to 0.529 in 2012. The journal still has a low impact factor rank (91/117) and we would like to improve this, although it is not a simple matter to do so. Our continuing efforts are directed towards trying to attract good invited papers and high quality submissions. In the last 9 months 162 manuscripts were submitted. Of these, 35 have been accepted, 80 rejected and the remainder are under revision or review. This means that we have seen a slight drop in the number of submissions and our acceptance rate has crept up a bit (from 10%) so we are getting fewer, hopefully better submissions which is a good sign. We have recently been informed that the Wiley Production Editor responsible for the journal is being promoted. Her replacement is based in India which will be much less convenient and may impact on the production process. The Editorial Committee will monitor this closely. As the contract with Wiley is due for renewal in 2016, with any alterations requiring agreement by 2015, we need to discuss any possible changes to the publishing model over the next year or two. We have started thinking about this within the Editorial Committee but perhaps a wider discussion amongst the membership would be useful?
