WHAT IS UN YOUTH?United Nations Youth Association of New Zealand, or UN Youth, serves as the youth arm of the United Nations Association of New Zealand, a member of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA). WFUNA has consultative status to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

Despite only being in existence since 1999, UN Youth creates an amazing opportunity for youth to express themselves, learn about the United Nations and provide positive solutions for what is, ultimately, their future

NZ MODEL SCNew Zealand Model Security Council is New Zealand’s premier university event bringing together like minded university students across New Zealand to discuss issues that plague the international community.

The NZ Model Security Council conference is a simulation of the real United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations and is charged with the maintenance of international peace and security.

Students assume the role of one of the 15 members of the Security Council. They engage in the art of persuasion as they lobby to adopt a resolution to an issue. They experience first-hand the dynamics of international relations and the challenges of achieving global compromise by learning to negotiate with those whose positions are contrary to their own. They must also balance the difficulty of the five veto-wielding permanent members on the Council.

OUR EVENT

It is an educational initiative that supports the vision, value and the principles of the NZ Tertiary Curriculum, which aims to encourage and inspire young New Zealanders to identify with communities beyond national borders and respect other cultures.

Model Security Council is a chance for students to express that inner diplomat. Whether they do law, science, arts or engineering, it doesn’t matter! All those attending have a common goal; to have the best educational conference possible. They get to network with other passionate individuals, understand how one of the most important international bodies functions and most of all, discover Dunedin!

OUR YEAR 2013NZ Model SC 2013 will be the largest it has ever been! This year the conference will held at the University of Otago in Dunedin, coinciding with the university mid-semester break. Students across the country will be travelling down to Otago to get amongst it. It will be held from Thursday 29th August – Monday 1st September.

What makes this year different is it will be a residential conference. All the students will be staying together to create a complete experience to NZ Model SC. It will also have more team building and workshops than before. Students really enjoy having the opportunity to work with others. Through this they can understand different worldviews and augment their own.

COMMITTEE SESSIONSA delegate will be allocated a UN Security Council member nation, whose polices and ideals they will adopt throughout the conference and which they will lobby and negotiate on behalf of for the entire duration. At NZ Model Security Council 2013, delegates will participate in debating resolutions on separate global issues over the three days. Committees are smaller groups of around 20 students, whereas the plenary includes all students in a larger debate.

WORKSHOPS AND SKILLS At NZ Model Security Council 2013 is focusing its efforts on up skilling the university students who attend. They have a deeper understanding of global issues than their high school counter parts. However, what are deficient are their logical reasoning, presentation and negotiation skills. We will be have a variety of sessions that will be in small groups. We will teach them these important skills. Students then can apply them in the committees.

SOCIALSWe understand the importance of having social activities that allow relationships and networks to develop. A variety of dinners, dress-up parties, and a formal ball, students have ample opportunity to get to know their fellow students. The ball will be the most valued social of them all. It will feature a formal dinner followed by dancing. The ball is a well-earned treat for the delegates after three days of an intense and robust educational experience.

OUR VISIONA world-class educational experience accessible to all young New Zealanders

UN Youth is fundamentally an educational NGO with the aim to ‘Inspire global citizens’. As a youthful, vibrant and energetic organisation, we aim to empower development through our educational programme by actively engaging global citizens. NZ Model Security Council 2013 seeks to provide university students with the tools and know how to use them. These tools equip this diverse range of young New Zealanders to become global citizens that are conscientious and challenge what is around them. With the hope, they will seek change on a local, national and international stage.

Our Theme

AN UNHEALTHY WORLDThe theme of NZ Model Security Council ties in with the vision of the conference because understanding the situations around you gives you a grasp of what is needed to take action. Unhealthy aspects range from public health, climate change, human rights to pollution and war.

It will be an empowering theme how insidious some of these issues are. The theme moves to remove the opaque veil masking the truth, and show the inner workings of each social problem. This theme is looks to the world. Not only distant lands over the seas, but also our own.

This theme is applicable to all the United Nations Security Council mandate is the maintenance of international peace and security. An unhealthy world gives rise to political, social and economic dimensions that the council addresses. It has the potential to be used in the specific contexts the resolutions will be debated on, and also tie together as a holistic theme encompassing the entire conference.

As a universal theme, it gives delegates a wide breadth and a creative license to engage with the various issues that have created and sustained an unhealthy world. It is a theme which allows students to see their role in civil society and their chance to make a difference in the world, be it on a local or global scale, and in the short or long term.

How we Benefit Young New Zealanders • Participants will build confidence in public speaking, negotiation, and critical thinking. • NZ Model Security Council demonstrates to university students that discussing pressing global issues are intellectually stimulating and exciting. • Youth are given a platform to promote and cause change and become involved within the local and national community. • Our event creates a safe and open forum for students from across New Zealand– an opportunity rarely experienced through traditional lectures of universities. • Participants will be exposed to local, national and international organisations that work towards improving our world and humanity; and • Students will meet other like-minded individuals and form long-lasting friendships and networks.

How we Benefit the Wider Community • Students will gain an awareness of non-government organisations in New Zealand and will be likely to volunteer in community initiatives – as seen countless times in previous years. • NZ Model Security Council provides a legitimate source for a youth perspective to engage with various issues, which can be used to influence decision making in all sectors of society. • Young people who participate in events like this often become leaders of their own communities, and it is critical that civil society encourages a flow of younger leaders to follow in their footsteps. • Communities are presented with a positive view of modern youth, which promotes a sense of trust, mutual respect and pride in its young people.

OUR TEAMMIKE PEEBLES - Co-ordinatorMBChB, University of Otago

The head honcho for New Zealand Model Security Council, coordinator Mike Peebles is a second year medical student at the University of Otago. Mike is especially passionate about health inequalities, both locally and globally; probably why UN Youth appeals so much. “UN Youth offers a unique way of educating New Zealand youth about some of the big issues facing the world today. But more than just that, it empowers young New Zealanders to be global citizens. It offers youth in New Zealand so much, and I think that’s what never fails to excite me about it.” In addition to coordinating NZ Model Security Council, Mike is also involved in the UN Youth Otago region, Medical Students for Global Awareness, and KartSport New Zealand.

ANU KAW - Assistant CoordinatorBBioMedSci, University of Otago

Anu is currently a second year student at the University of Otago, studying a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences, majoring in Functional Human Biology. She is a seasoned traveller, was bitten by the Model UN bug when attending her first conference in Turkey in 2008. Upon her return to New Zealand, Anu was introduced to UN Youth NZ and has been involved as an officeholder since. Aside from badminton, running, rugby, cricket, salsa and tennis, she has a particular interest in woman and children’s rights in the Middle East.

OLIVIA JORGENSEN-AITCHISON - Educations OfficerBCom, Victoria University of Wellington

Olivia is currently in her second year studying towards a BCom in Marketing and Management and a BA in Political Science at Victoria University of Wellington. She was the co-ordinator for the Wellington High School Model United Nations this year and plays an active role within UN Youth. She is looking forward to NZ Model SC later in the year where she will play an integral role. This role entails many aspects but is primarily organising educational material for the conference. Outside of UN Youth Olivia works part time at OrbitRemit which is a global money transferring company working out of Wellington, New Zealand.

TAMSIN ROBB - Registrations OfficerBSc, University of Auckland

Tamsin is a Second Year student at The University of Auckland studying towards a BSc in Biomedical Science. She has a strong passion for UN Youth and is thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to contribute to running a national event. When not working on UN Youth projects, she is representing her peers at Student Staff meetings, helping first-year students settle into university life, playing in and helping to coordinate the University of Auckland Concert band, or even baking sweet treats with her flat mates.

EMIL KIROFF - Finance OfficerBCom/LLB, University of Auckland

Emil is a student at university with strong interests in accounting, finance and international law. UN Youth appeals to him, because he sees the value that it generates for young people across New Zealand. It provides a home to likeminded students, to develop themselves and contribute to a professional student organisation. He serves as chairperson on his local Auckland Council Youth Board, competed internationally in business case competitions, a primary school Board of Trustees member and even a U21 national champ at triathlon. Emil hopes the NZ Model Security Council 2013 will establish a proud legacy for years to come!
