NYU Washington – Quick Facts One of NYU’s 13 Global Academic Centers.

Students attend for one semester or full academic year.

Courses taught in NYU’s own academic facilities, by locally-hired faculty.

Classroom learning supplemented by field trips, excursions, internships, and community service.

For Spring 2013: Currently 20 students, with growth potential up to 50-60 students

Eventually, the Center will house 120+ students each semester:

All upper class students (sophomores-seniors), from all of the NYU schools, representing many different majors

Visiting Students from other US Colleges and Universities

Full-time professional staff provides high quality student support services.

NYU Washington – Academics Register for 12-18 credits, not including waitlisted courses!

Internship and Washington DC Culture Course :

4 credits

Must be taken for a letter grade

Mandatory for all students participating in an internship

May be paid or unpaid

NO UNAUTHORIZED ABSENCES. Any unauthorized absences will result in a 3% grade reduction.

Wait for syllabi before planning personal travel! Site visits & field trips (often on Fridays) are considered required class time.

Exams may NOT be taken early/late.

Unless otherwise notified, ALL of your books will be purchasable during your orientation in DC.

NYU Washington – Internships Internships are a hallmark of the NYU

Washington, DC program. Although they are not mandatory, we suspect that nearly 100% of our students in DC will elect to intern while in our nation’s capital. NYU Washington, DC has cultivated a special relationship with alums, friends and others to provide special opportunities for our students. This includes preferential treatment in the application process at selection placement sites.

NYU Washington – Leadership NYU Washington DC Student Advisory Board:

Comprised of students interested in planning programs, providing program feedback, and enhancing their experience in Washington DC

Bi-weekly meetings

Open to all who are interested

Volunteering Opportunities

Student Life staff will work with local organizations to identify charitable volunteering and community service opportunities

NYChew: Weekly service project started by students this semester to make sandwiches that are delivered to the homeless by a local agency

Student Senator’s Council: International Ambassador [?]

Hold office hours and communicate with student constituency, faculty, and staff

Create and lead a mid-semester student feedback session

Collaborate with and stay connected to the NY-based council and Ambassadors at other sites

NYU Washington – Arrival ARRIVAL

You must arrange for your own transportation from the airport to NYU Washington DC

Arrival instructions will be provided prior to departure

CHECK-IN

All students MUST check-in ON arrival day (January 6th for J-term and January 30th for Spring semester) by 5pm.

Housing is only available for dates of the program:

J-term: 9am on January 6th – January 25th @ 12 noon.

Sping: 9am on January 30th – May 23rd @ 12 noon.

If you arrive early or depart late, you must find your own accommodations.

ORIENTATION

Orientation is MANDATORY. Spring orientation begins on the evening of January 30st through February 3rd.

February 18th is a holiday (Presidents’ Day).

Classes begin February 4th.

NYU Washington – Housing Housing is mandatory and guaranteed for all students

Six floors of the new Academic Center are residences.

Most students will share four-person suites.

Each suite will have two bedrooms (two students per bedroom), a full bathroom, a furnished kitchen, and a living/dining area.

Housing assignments are NOT first-come, first-serve; they are based on the Online Housing Questionnaire.

All bedrooms/apartments are gender neutral

We will attempt to honor all mutual roommate requests

Assignments will be emailed about 2 weeks before arrival

A limited number of single-occupancy studios are available. Priority for these rooms will go to students with a documented need (through the Moses Center) for a single space.

Singles are small, efficiency-style studios a private kitchen and bathroom.

The academic center is a non-smoking building.

There is NOT a meal plan or dining hall at NYU Washington.

NYU Washington – Security NYU’s center is monitored by security guards 24 hours a day,

7 days a week.

There is ALWAYS an NYU staff member on duty, in New York and Washington, DC.

You will be given a phone number to call in emergencies during on-site Orientation.

Help us keep you safe. Follow all staff recommendations:

Don’t invite strangers into the residence. Your guests should always be in your company.

Always lock your doors.

Don’t ever hitchhike.

Don’t leave your street smarts in NYC!

Additional safety/security information will be covered during your on-site orientation in DC.

Clothes to pack DC winters are a bit milder than New York, but be prepared for cold weather (including snow!). Spring will be gorgeous! Be sure to pack plenty of business-appropriate clothing for your internship!

NYU Washington – Billing Just like a semester at NYU in New York

eBills ONLY - sent to your NYU email address

You must register for at least 12 credits, NOT including waitlisted courses, for your bill/financial aid to be correct!

J-term tuition will be due December 10th.

Spring 2013 bills will be generated in mid-December

You can authorize a parent or other individual to have access to your eBill

Payment is made directly to the NYU Bursar

Estimated Housing Charge: All students are charged the same housing charge on your first bill – the cost of a double room.

This is NOT an indication of your actual housing assignment

For students assigned to a single studio apartment, a new eBill for the remaining balance will be sent 2-3 weeks into the semester
