NYPD. Green Fleet.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) counts among its fleet more than 800 “green” vehicles, including hybrids and electric vehicles. The Department deployed the Nissan Altima hybrid – the first alternative fuel vehicle to be used as a marked patrol car – in 2009, followed by the Ford Fusion hybrid in 2010. The electric Chevrolet Volt followed in 2011. The NYPD Fleet Services Division noted Department vehicles consumed nearly a half-million fewer gallons of fuel between 2010 and 2011 and that, in addition to reducing tailpipe emissions and reliance on gasoline, the use of green vehicles leads to fewer repairs and parts replacements than conventional cars in similar assignments. The continued testing and introduction of alternative-energy vehicles to the Police Department is part of New York City’s overall effort to achieve a greener, greater New York. The Department's alternative-fuel vehicles are partly funded through PlaNYC, the City's long-term plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. NYPD currently operates eight hundred seven (807) green vehicles.

One of NYCLHVCC’s standout fleets is NYC Parks and Recreation. We interviewed Jonathan Ells, NYC

Parks and Recreation’s Chief of Staff for Citywide Operations about their soon to be 1,662 Alternative

Fuel Vehicle Fleet.

NYCLHVCC: What made NYC Parks & Rec interested in having an alternative fuel vehicle fleet?

NYC Parks & Rec: I think that Parks is interested in green fleet because patrons come to the park to enjoy silence and fresh air, and green fleet allows us to provide quieter and cleaner public spaces.

NYCLHVCC: What were some of the barriers about implementing the alternative fuel vehicles in the NYC Parks & Rec fleet?

NYC Parks & Rec: In terms of barriers funding is always an issue. More specifically, we had to overcome a lot of skepticism on our biodiesel program, both from internal users and other city agencies.

NYCLHVCC: Do you have any advice for a fleet thinking about purchasing an alternative fuel vehicle for the first time?

NYC Parks & Rec: I would suggest they talk to Clean Cities or other groups so that they can be put in contact with fleets who have made this transition before and can help navigate potential issues and recommend the best possible types of vehicles and fuels.

NYCLHVCC: What is your favorite thing about the NYC Parks and Rec fleet?

NYC Parks & Rec: The most exciting thing about Parks fleet is the incredible diversity of the fleet – we have over 40 separate types of vehicles from tree trimmers and log loaders to beach cleaners and solar powered light towers.

NYCLHVCC: Do you have any exciting happenings that we can share with other NYCLHVCC stakeholders?

NYC Parks & Rec: Our biggest news or events are the Fleet Show on May 10, and also the fall event we are planning with you in Union Square. I understand Clean Cities will have a major presence at the Fleet Show and we are very excited for the day.

WELCOME NEW NYCLHVCC MEMBERS!

CNG WORKSHOP SERIES. The three-part Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) workshop series was a success! The first workshop consisted of a gathering of local CNG users to talk about the barriers met with owning and operating CNG fueled vehicles in the NYC & Lower Hudson Valley region. Next, our second CNG workshop focused on infrastructure development with various fuel suppliers. Here, our group was able to discuss how best to get more infrastructure started so that end users would have more access to CNG. Our final CNG workshop took place at the Bronx Zoo where we invited everyone, both suppliers and end users, to talk about how to mesh all these wants and needs together. Two important panels included: funding opportunities and policy issues surrounding CNG.
